Man dies 2 weeks after being tortured by gunmen in J&K

A man, who was abducted and tortured by unidentified gunmen two weeks ago in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, died at a hospital here today, police said. Omais Bhat (20) succumbed to injuries at the SKIMS hospital here this morning after battling for life for two weeks, an official said. Bhat was kidnapped from the Qaimoh area of Kulgam district on March 8 and was found lying unconscious a few hours, he added. He said the kidnappers, after torturing the victim, had apparently left him for dead.

Woman's suicide: Cong seeks registration of FIR against MP minister, family

A Congress delegation today met Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and demanded registration of a case against state PWD Minister Rampal Singh and his family members in connection with a woman's alleged suicide. Preeti Raghuvanshi (28) allegedly committed suicide at her parents' house at Udaipura in Raisen district on March 16. Her family members alleged that she was married to the minister's son Girjesh, who was planning to marry a second time. The delegation, led by Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ajay Singh and state Congress chief Arun Yadav, also demanded that the minister be removed from the state cabinet. In a memorandum handed over to the governor, the opposition party said the woman's father, in his complaint to police, has blamed Rampal Singh, his wife, their son Girjesh and another son for her death. Indian-origin man dies in knife attack in UK

A 48-year-old Indian-origin man has been killed in a knife attack in the city's Southall suburb, police said today, amidst a rise in street crimes in the British capital . Scotland Yard has identified the victim as Balbir Johal, a logistics planner and a resident of Slough, who was attacked on Monday but he succumbed to injuries in a hospital a short while later. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Homicide and Major Crime Command launched a murder investigation and have charged two people. Hassan Mohammed, 23, and Yassin Yussuf, 21, appeared before the Ealing Magistrates Court charged with murder. Next of kin have been informed. While formal identification awaits, the deceased can be named as Balbir Johal from Slough. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place, a Met Police statement said. Indian-origin man jailed for beating up wife in UK

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to 10 months behind bars for beating up his wife during arguments at their home in north-west England. Gurmit Dosanjh had pleaded guilty to two charges of "occasioning actual bodily harm" on wife Sadiya and was sentenced at a hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester this week. The court was told that in the second instance the 46-year-old businessman had used a crutch being carried by his 37-year-old wife as a result of the first assault by him. Judge John Edwards told the accused that he was set to sentence him to 18 months in prison but had been moved to reduce it to 10 following positive character references presented about him. Man kills wife for drinking

A man distraught over his wife's drinking habit, axed her to death in Jharkhand's Latehar district, police said today. The tribal, who had been trying to rid his wife of her habit, had a quarrel with her when she returned to their home at Bhuiyantoli drunk on Wednesday evening, the police said. Villagers said the man in a fit of rage picked up an axe and attacked his wife. The woman was killed instantly. The man then fled to their married daughter's house to avoid suspicion. Police went to the spot on being informed and the body was recovered today. The man was arrested and forwarded to judicial custody.

Gold seized from air passengers, five arrested

Gold worth over Rs 42.7 lakh was seized from five passengers, including two women, arrived from Dubai at Kozhikode international airport today, a top official said here today. Acting on a tip off that some carriers have hidden gold in compound form in their body,officers of Air Intelligence Unit kept surveillance on passengers, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. He said the officers intercepted the five passengers and a personalsearch resulted in the recovery of gold weighing over 1.3 kg from them. He said the Customs sleuths in Kozhikode Airport made the seizure a day after they effected seizure of over 1.5 kg gold worth 47.3 lakh from four passengers arrived from the Gulf countries.

SC closes proceedings against Tej Pratap in scribe murder case

The Supreme Court today closed the proceedings against former Bihar health minister Tej Pratap Yadav, son of jailed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, in the murder case of a Siwan-based journalist. The apex court had asked the CBI to investigate allegations relating to media reports featuring photographs and videos that showed Yadav, a former Bihar minister, along with two absconding accused, Mohd Kaif and Javed, who are currently in judicial custody in the Rajdeo Ranjan murder case. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud considered the submission of Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aman Lekhi that CBI has not found any incriminating material against the RJD leader. Top Pak police officer sent on 30-day physical remand

A controversial Pakistani police officer allegedly involved in several extra-judicial killings was sent on a 30-day physical remand by an anti-terrorism court here today, a day after the fugitive cop surrendered before the Supreme Court. Former Senior Superintendent of Police Malir in Karachi Rao Anwar was produced in an anti-terrorism court in a case related to the extra-judicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud. Anwar, who is known for his close contacts with politicians and former President Asif Zardari, is accused of staging the extra-judicial killing of four persons including Mehsud on the outskirts of Karachi on January 13 this year. Key accused acquitted in 22-year-old coal trader murder case

A CBI court here today acquitted key accused Ramadhir Singh in the 22-year-old murder case of coal trader Sanjay Singh. CBI judge Sachindra Pandey pronounced the judgement through video conference, acquitting Ramadhir Singh, former chairman of Balia District Board of Uttar Pradesh, for lack of evidence. He had been charged under various IPC sections including 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy), and the Arms Act. Ramadhir Singh, husband of former Dhanbad mayor Indu Singh, is in lodged in a Hazaribagh jail, but will not be set free as he is serving a sentence in another case. Sanjay Singh, a coal trader, was shot dead on May 26, 1996, at the Lubi Circular Road here. Besides Ramadhir Singh, two other people were named as accused in the case but they were acquitted on November 27 last year. The prosecution would appeal against the judgement in a higher court, public prosecutor T N Upadhyay told reporters.

Delhi: Gold valued at 27 Lakhs seized at IGI Airport

The officers of the Customs Preventive and Air Intelligence Unit of Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday intercepted a passenger and a ground staff member in an alleged case of smuggling of gold.A passenger, 33, traveling on Bangkok-New Delhi flight named TG-315, along with 30-year-old team leader of a ground staff team have been arrested for smuggling a total of 980 grams of gold.The unit has recovered two pieces of gold weighing 215 grams which have been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act of 1962.Further, it was revealed that arrested ground staff member has smuggled 765 grams of gold on two previous occasions.The market value of the total smuggled gold has been adjudged at Rupees 27, 47, 018.Both the passenger and the ground staff member have been arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act 1962.

Can't give TV to Neeraj Bawana nor shift him to other cell: Tihar jail to court

Neeraj Bawana is a "hardcore criminal" who cannot be shifted from the high security ward and cannot be given a TV set due to his misconduct in the prison, the Tihar Jail authorities told a Delhi court today. The jail superintendent made the submission in a report filed after a court order on the plea of the gangster, who went on hunger strike demanding a TV set and other facilities in jail or be shifted to other ward, saying he was filing such petitions before various courts to put "undue pressure upon the jail administration for ulterior motives". Maoist leader held in Telangana

A leader of the banned CPI(Maoist) in Telangana was arrested and explosives allegedly in his possession seized, police said today. On a tip off, a police team arrested 21-year-old Sodi Ungaiah alias Suresh after intercepting his motor bike near Kaliveru in Kothagudem district last evening. Police said they seized 20 detonators and eight gelatin sticks from his possession, while he was allegedly on the way to supply them to the ultras. Letter, CDs in HC claim 1984 riots accused confessed to presence at incident site

The Delhi High Court today sought a reply from Congress leader Sajjan Kumar on a letter written to it alleging that the accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case have confessed to being present at the spot where the violent incidents had occurred. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Anu Malhotra also directed the CBI to file its stand on the letter, purportedly written by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) seeking action against the accused for their alleged involvement in the crime. Delhi airport staff among two held for gold smuggling

Two men, including an employee of a company engaged for ground work at the Delhi airport, were today arrested by the customs officials for their alleged involvement in gold smuggling, according to an official statement. The accused had shaped the gold in two keys and changed its colour from yellow to silver to dodge the customs authorities. One man was intercepted by the officials after his arrival from Bangkok at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here, a statement issued by the customs said. Later, another man, who works a as team leader with a ground handling agency at the airport, was also held by the customs authorities over suspicion of smuggling. A detailed personal search resulted in recovery of two pieces of gold, which were given the shape of keys, weighing 215 grams, it said. "It was revealed that the ground handling staff has also smuggled approximately 765 grams gold on two previous occasions," it said. The market value of the said 980 grams of gold works out .

Dalit MPs of BJP to meet Shah over apex court order diluting SC/ST Act

A group of BJP's Dalit MPs, who today met Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, said they would meet party chief Amit Shah to press for a review petition against a Supreme Court order, which dilutes a law covering cases of atrocities against scheduled castes and tribes. BJP's 'SC Morcha' chief Vinod Kumar Sonkar, who is also a Lok Sabha member, told PTI that they met Prasad and would meet Shah, and insisted that the government would ensure that no harm was done to the interests of the community.
