Delhi CM, Deputy tender apology to lawyer Amit Sibal in defamation case

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia today tendered an apology to senior advocate Amit Sibal, son of former union minster Kapil Sibal, in a criminal defamation case filed by him. Kejriwal and Sisodia apologised for making "unfounded allegations" against Sibal in a letter which was submitted before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal. Sibal and the AAP leaders also filed a joint application in the court seeking withdrawal of the case filed in 2013. The court then posted the matter for further hearing on April 6 when it will consider the joint application for disposing off the case amicably in view of the written apology. Besides Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, complainant Amit Sibal had also named former AAP members Prashant Bhushan and Shazia Ilmi as accused in the case. The lower court on September 20, 2014, had put all the four accused on trial for the charge under section 500 (defamation) of the IPC.

B'desh SC stays Khaleda Zia's bail in orphanage graft case

The Supreme Court of Bangladesh on Monday stayed Dhaka High Court's order which granted bail to former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.The top court stayed the bail until May 8.A full bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order.On Thursday, according to the Daily Star, the Bangladesh government and the Anti-Corruption Commission had filed two separate leave-to-appeal petitions with the Bangladesh SC challenging the grant of bail to Khaleda by the High Court.Last week, the former Bangladesh premier secured a four-month bail after she was handed five years of imprisonment by a Bangladesh court in the orphanage graft case. INX Media: CBI seeks time to file reply on Bhaskararaman's bail plea

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday sought time to file a reply in a Delhi Court on the anticipatory bail plea of Karti Chidambaram's charted accountant S. Indian woman tortured by employer in Kuwait: report

An Indian woman who was working as a domestic worker in Kuwait has registered a complaint against her employer, accusing him of physically abusing her, according to a media report. The Indian woman had a deep cut on the head and bruises on the hands and arms, a report in The Times Kuwait quoted police officials as saying. The woman, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital by the accused's sister who came to the victim's rescue while she was being tortured, the report said. The woman later contacted her brother who was also working in Kuwait and he filed a complaint with the police. A medical report of the victim was also submitted to the police.

Naxals kill contractor, set ablaze machines at road construction site

Naxals killed a contractor early today and set on fire four machines engaged in road construction work in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, a senior police official said. The incident took place between Tumnar and Koitpal villages, where the road construction work was going on under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana, Deputy Inspector General of Police (south Bastar range) Sundarraj P told PTI. A group of armed Naxals stormed the construction site, located around 7 km from Bijapur town and about 450 km from the state capital, and threatened the labourers to stop the work, he said. The ultras then set ablaze four machines and after that abducted the road construction contractor Vishal Kumar (36) and took him along with them to a forest nearby, the DIG said. Three of family killed in cylinder explosion in Erode district

A mother and her two daughters were killed after the LPG cylinder in their house exploded in the district today, police said. The 45-year-old woman, Jayamani and her daughters aged 18 and 13 were found charred to death, when the police broke open the door and entered house at Thayirpalayam, after receiving information from the neighbours. Jayamani's husband was away at work when the incident occurred. Police suspect that the gas could have been leaking since last night and that the cylinder must have exploded when someone switched on the light. Investigation is on, police said.

Kejriwal expresses 'regret' to Gadkari over statements

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari expressing regret over certain statements he made against the BJP leader, who had filed a defamation suit against him, a court here was informed today. Kejriwal and Gadkari also submitted a joint application today before the court seeking withdrawal of the defamation case filed against the AAP leader. The application was moved before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal after Kejriwal's counsel submitted the letter in which the AAP leader has expressed regret for making statements without regard to their verifiability. "I made certain statements, without regard to its verifiability, which seem to have hurt you and therefore you have filed a defamation case against me. I have nothing personal against you. ED attaches Rs 68 lakh assets of Naxal leaders in Bihar

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today said it has attached assets worth Rs 68 lakh of two senior Maoist leaders in Bihar in connection with a money-laundering probe against them. This is second such action against the top Naxal leadership after the central probe agency last month attached properties worth Rs 86 lakh of a Jharkhand-based ultra 'commander' Sandeep Yadav. The latest action is against Bihar-based brothers Pradumn Sharma and Pramod Sharma and the ED took cognisance of 67 FIRs and charge sheets filed against them by the the state police to file its criminal case under the clauses of Prevention of Money Laundering Act. IRDAI member's order amounts to abetting corruption in insurance sector: SAT

The Securities Appellate Tribunal has come down heavily on a member of regulator IRDAI for making a "false statement" in an order, saying it "virtually amounts to aiding and abetting corruption in the insurance business". Setting aside an order passed by IRDAI Member (non-life) P J Joseph, the tribunal also directed the regulator to entrust the matter to a "competent officer" other than him and pass a fresh order. The latest ruling has come on a plea filed by UK-based Atkins Special Risks Ltd against an order passed in the case of Jagson International Ltd. Atkins is into broking special risk insurance and re-insurance with core competence in marine and energy insurance. It provided international re-insurance cover to Jagson during the period 2002-2012 for an yearly commission. Delhi BJP MLA OP Sharma suspended for remaining Budget Session

BJP MLA Om Prakash Sharma was today suspended for the remaining Budget Session of the Delhi Assembly for allegedly using derogatory language in the House while objecting to the presence of Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot in it. AAP legislators accused Sharma of using "unparliamentary and undignified" language in the House. "I suspend O P Sharma for the remaining days of the session," Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said after a motion, moved by AAP MLA Somnath Bharti, was passed by a voice vote. Turkish embassy in Denmark attacked with firebombs

Danish police say they are searching at least two people suspected of attacking the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen with firebombs. Henrik Moll, head of Copenhagen police, told reporters Monday that no one was injured in the early morning attack that caused minor damage to the exterior of the embassy building. He said patrolling police officers partly witnessed the incident and saw two people fleeing from the scene. A criminal investigation has been launched into the matter. Danish media reported the bombs were apparently Molotov cocktails.

Vacancies of prosecuting officers in courts will be filled

The Telangana government would soon fill up vacancies of prosecuting officers in courts in the state, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said here today. "In a short period, a decision would be taken and these vacancies would be filled up. Government feels concrete steps should be taken in filling up the vacancies," he said in the state assembly. Rao, who was replying to a query in the Question Hour, said the Home department is on the job. "The Home department is making efforts to take concrete steps for appointment of PPs (Public Prosecutors) towards reducing crime in the state and delivering faster justice," he said. Rao also said crime showed a declining trend in the state with police ensuring conviction of criminals by taking concrete steps. According to the written reply, a total of 311 Prosecuting Officers posts have been sanctioned in different criminal courts in the state. It said 83 posts are presently vacant.

S Korea prosecutors seek arrest of ex-president Lee

Seoul prosecutors said today they are seeking the arrest of former President Lee Myung-bak over corruption allegations, on the grounds he might destroy evidence if not detained. Lee, the latest of several ex-leaders to be embroiled in a criminal inquiry, is being investigated for multiple cases of bribery amounting to millions of dollars. The 76-year-old, who served from 2008 to 2013, faced a marathon interrogation by prosecutors last week, during which he denied most of the accusations he faced. The Seoul prosecutors' office investigating the case said today it had officially asked the court to order Lee's formal arrest. "Each accusation he faces is a significant offence that requires formal arrest," Yonhap and multiple other media quoted an unidentified senior prosecutor as saying. 10-year-old girl murdered in Jabalpur

A 10-year-old girl on Monday strangled to death in her house in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.The incident happened in the Aadhartaal police station area.The girl was a class 6th student of Government School, Krishi Nagar, and lived with her family in Katra Bajrang Bara area on rent.The girl's father is a driver by profession and her mother is involved in beedi making.The incident took place at about 5am in the morning when the girl went to the bathroom to have a bath. When she did not come out for a while, someone peeked inside the bathroom through the curtain and saw her in a pool of blood, according to official sourcesThe girl was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors could not save her life.Her body has been sent for post-mortem.More details are awaited.

Lalu convicted in 4th fodder scam case, Jagannath Mishra acquitted

Jailed former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad was today convicted by a special CBI court in the fourth fodder scam case while another ex-chief minister Jagannath Mishra was acquitted. CBI judge Shiv Pal Singh held guilty the 69-year-old RJD chief along with 18 others while Mishra was among 12 acquitted in connection with the case RC 38 A/96 pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from Dumka treasury in the early 1990s. SC notice to dentist couple in Aarushi murder case

The Supreme Court today admitted an appeal against the acquittal of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the 2008 twin murder case of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj. The plea was filed by Khumkala Banjade, the wife of Hemraj. A bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi issued notice to the dentist couple, who were acquitted by the Allahabad High Court in the twin murder case in October last year. Banjade had filed an appeal in December last year against the Talwars acquittal in the case. Later, the CBI also filed an appeal against the acquittal of Talwars in the case. On October 12 last year, the high court acquitted the couple saying they could not be held guilty on the basis of the evidence on record. Court convicts Lalu Prasad in 4th case of fodder scam

Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad was today convicted by a special CBI court in the fourth case of multi-crore fodder scam related to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from Dumka treasury in 1990s. Judge Shiv Pal Singh acquitted former chief minister Jagannath Mishra in the same case. The case RC 38A/96 pertains to illegal withdrawal of money from Dumka treasury. The quantum of punishment in the case would be pronounced later. The RJD chief has been convicted in four cases of fodder scam so far.
