Man kills minor boy after he resists sexual assault

A man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a minor boy after he tried to resist from the crime, police said today. The accused, Amar Nath, was traced after the victim's friend helped the police in getting his sketch prepared, they said. On February 28, a resident of Jaitpur approached police with a complaint that his 11-year-old son was missing and expressed a suspicion that he had been kidnapped, the police said. A case was registered and efforts were made to find the boy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said. However, on March 3, the body of a boy was seen floating in Agra Canal. The body was sent to AIIMS mortuary and it was seen that it resembled the kidnapped boy. The father of the boy subsequently identified him and the autopsy revealed that he had a sharp cut injury over his neck. HC grants bail to man accused of running edu institute without recognition

The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to a man accused of running an educational institute here without proper recognition from the authorities concerned. It is alleged that Vinod B Lal, along with others, was running the Ewing Christian Public School Junior Branch without having recognition from authorities. The bail application, filed by Lal, was opposed by Additional Advocate General of Uttar Pradesh, who submitted that the accused has a long criminal history and was involved in many forgery cases. Justice M K Gupta granted bail to Lal with conditions that he shall surrender his passport, if any, before the trial court judge within a week and shall not tamper with the evidence or threaten witnesses in the case. Also, he should remain present before the trial court on each date fixed, either personally or through his counsel, the judge said.

SP MLC booked for inaugurating road 'unlawfully'

A Samajwadi Party MLC was booked while four other party members were arrested here for allegedly inaugurating an elevated road "unlawfully", police said today. The action was taken after a complaint was filed by Ghaziabad development authority (GDA), they said. Vice chairperson of the GDA and District Magistrate Ritu Maheswari said that MLC Rakesh Yadav and other functionaries took law in their hands. The inauguration of the elevated road is unacceptable. The road will be opened for public after formal ceremony. They were inaugurating the elevated road unlawfully, which was supposed to be done by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, she said. SHO Sihani Gate Police Station Vinod Pandey said that an FIR has been lodged against MLC Rakesh Yadav. Four SP workers were arrested in the connection. Man killed after pistol goes off while clicking selfies

A 23-year-old man was killed while allegedly taking selfies with a pistol when it accidentally went off, the police said today. The victim's friend was also at the spot but he ran away. The deceased has been identified only as Vijay, they said. He belonged to Rajasthan but had been staying with his uncle and aunt for the last two years in Vijay Vihar area of Rohini. Vijay along with his friend was in his room when a gunshot was heard. Vijay's family members have alleged that he was killed, but police believe that they were clicking selfies with the pistol when it accidentally went off. The police also found selfies of the duo posing with the pistol on the mobile phone of the deceased.

2 burglars arrested with jewellery worth Rs 40 l

The Delhi Police has arrested two burglars and recovered diamond and gold jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh from their possession. The police has arrested Rajneet Soni, 32, and Vimal, 21, and claimed to have solved three cases of theft and trespass in Anand Vihar area in East Delhi. Besides jewellery, the police said it has also recovered a car, used in commission of the offence, from the possession of the two men. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad said that on February 18, a burglary took place in Ram Vihar area in east Delhi and diamond and gold jewellery of around Rs 50 lakh and Rs four lakh cash were taken away. An FIR was lodged at Anand Vihar Police Station and during investigation, the police examined the CCTV footage of the area in which the burglars were seen using a Scorpio car to commit the crime. 5 more arrested in cheating racket case in Raj

Rajasthan's special operation group (SOG) today arrested five more people for facilitating cheating during the Rajasthan police constable recruitment exam, an official said. As many as 21 accused have been arrested so far in the case. On Monday, six people were arrested for facilitating online cheating during the exam, the official said. Two key accused of a gang that cloned thumbprints of candidates and sent proxies to write the exam were arrested today, Additional Director General (SOG) Umesh Mishra said. In a separate cheating racket case, three accused, including prime accused and centre director were also arrested today,Mishra said. It was found that the gang made a thumbprint impression of the original candidate and pasted it on the thumb of the proxy who took the exam. "It was also learnt that they used some oil to make the fake thumbprint last for at least one hour. Candidates managed to cheat the biometric attendance system," Mishra said.

Lawsuit: NYPD forced Muslim women to remove head coverings

Two Muslim women who say the New York Police Department forced them to remove religious head coverings after they were arrested have sued the city to force a change to the practice. The women and an advocacy group are seeking class action status with the lawsuit filed Friday in Manhattan federal court. The city says it's confident that its policy passes constitutional muster. The lawsuit described how two Muslim women in separate instances were left in tears as they were forced to remove their hijabs and be photographed in front of men. The city says people who do not wish to remove religious head coverings in front of others can be taken to a more private location to be photographed.

Man robbed, shot at in Delhi's Bindapur

A 45-year-old man was shot at in southwest Delhi's Bindapur today and the accused fled with the man's bag containing Rs 10 lakh, police said. The victim, Jitendra, who works as a collection agent with a private company, was going to his office in Nawada carrying more than Rs 10 lakh in a bag, they said. He had withdrawn the money from a bank and was going to his office on his scooter when two unidentified armed assailants came on a motorcycle and intercepted him, they added. The accused took out a gun and tried to snatch the bag. When the victim objected, one of the accused shot him in the leg and successfully snatched the bag and fled from the spot, the police said, adding the victim was rushed to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Police suspect that the accused had carried out a recce before committing the crime and had been following the victim after he left the bank with cash. CCTV footage of the area are being scanned to identify the accused, they said.

Customs seizes pistol, air gun parts at Delhi airport, 2 arrested

Two Indian men have been arrested from the Delhi airport by customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle pistol and air gun parts into the country. The arrest and subsequent seizure happened in two separate cases. In the first case, a 45-year-old man was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Bangkok yesterday. A detailed search of his baggage and personal examination resulted in recovery of four RONI G1 pistol-carbine conversion units, one RONI B (Beretta) pistol-carbine conversion unit, holographic weapon sight, magnifier units, rail sling attachment and RONI instruction manual, a release issued by the customs said. Beant Singh assassination case: Court holds Tara guilty

A court here today held Jagtar Singh Tara guilty in a case pertaining to the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. The court of additional district and session judge J S Sidhu will pronounce the quantum of sentence tomorrow, Tara's counsel Simranjit Singh said. Tara (43) had earlier confessed to his involvement in the assassination of Beant Singh in 1995. Simranjit Singh said Tara had admitted to his involvement in the assassination of former chief minister in a confession letter which he had submitted to the court in January this year. On August 31, 1995, then chief minister Beant Singh was killed in an explosion outside the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. Punjab police employee Dilawar Singh had acted as a human bomb in the incident.

11 convicted in Ramgarh beef lynching case

A fast track court here today convicted 11 people for lynching a meat trader in June last year over the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car. Judge Om Prakash found the 11 people guilty under various sections of the IPC, including 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons) and 149 (unlawful assembly). The quantum of punishment would be pronounced on March 21. A group of people had lynched Alimuddin Ansari, 40, in Bazaar Tand locality of Ramgarh town on June 29, 2017, on the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car. Forensic tests later confirmed that the meat he was carrying was beef. The sale of beef is banned in the state. Additional Public Prosecutor S K Sukla said there were 12 accused and one of them is a minor. The prosecution has moved the Juvenile Justice Board with a prayer that the minor be treated as an adult in the case, Sukla said. Tejpal case: Court completes examination of victim

A court in North Goa today completed the examination of the woman, who had accused former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting her in 2013. The victim was examined for the second consecutive day as part of the trial, which began yesterday in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Vijaya Pol. "The examination of the victim was completed today. The cross-examination would be conducted later on," Public Prosecutor Francis Tavera told reporters after the day-long proceeding in the court located at Mapusa town. Tavera said the date for the cross-examination of the victim would be fixed later. The victim, a junior colleague of Tejpal, had accused him of sexually assaulting her inside a lift at a five-star hotel in Goa during the magazine's THiNK fest event in 2013. Cell phone explodes in student's pocket injuring his thigh

A 14-year old boy today sustained serious injuries on his thigh when the cell phone he kept in his trouser pocket exploded at Dharapuram town in Tirupur district, police said. Balaraj, a ninth standard student, had kept the cellphone with the charger in his pocket while on his way to school, they said. French arms firm Thales to face graft charges in S Africa with Zuma

French arms manufacturer Thales will also face corruption charges alongside South Africa's ex-president Jacob Zuma when he appears in court, prosecutors said today, reinstating charges dropped nearly a decade ago. UK launches murder probe into Russian exile's death

British police launched a murder probe today into the death of Russian exile Nikolai Glushkov in London, after a post-mortem found he died from "compression to the neck". "A murder investigation has been launched following the results of a post-mortem into the death of 68-year-old Russian businessman Nikolay Glushkov," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement. The retired Russian executive was found dead at his home in southwest London on Monday evening. "A special post mortem began on Thursday, 15 March and we received the pathologist report today (Friday, 16 March), which gave the cause of death as compression to the neck," police said. Glushkov had received political asylum in Britain after being jailed in Russia for money laundering and fraud. He was linked to late Kremlin opponent Boris Berezovsky, an oligarch who was found hanged in his home outside London in 2013. 4 people found dead in parked van in Southern California

Southern California authorities are investigating the deaths of two adults and two children whose bodies were found in a parked van that had its windows covered with blankets and a sunshade. Police in the city of Garden Grove near Los Angeles say a woman reported last night that the white Honda van was emitting a very foul odor. Police found the bodies of a man, a woman, a girl and a boy. None had obvious trauma. The woman who made the report told police she had seen the van parked in the CVS store lot for several days and thought its occupants were a homeless family. Orange County coroner investigators will try to determine the cause and time of the deaths.
