Minor girl raped by 30-year-old man in UP

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 30-year-old man in a village under Gopiganj police station area here, police said today. SP Sachindra Patel said she was taken to a secluded spot last night by the accused and raped. On returning home, the girl informed about the incident to her family, who went out to search for the accused, but he had fled the village by then, the SP said. The victim has been sent for medical examination and teams have been set up to nab the accused, the SP added.

Seven SC judges to retire in 2018

Beginning March 1, seven judges of the Supreme Court will retire this year. The apex court is already short of six judges even as a recommendation for appointing two judges is pending with the government. On March 1, Justice Amitava Roy will demit office, followed by Justice Rajesh Agrawal on May 4, according to the websites of the Supreme Court and the law ministry. Friday was the last working day for Justice Roy as the top court will reopen on March 5 after the Holi break. Justice J Chalmeswar, the senior-most judge of the top court after the chief justice of India, will retire on June 22, followed by Justice Adarsh Goel on July 6, the websites said. CJI Dipak Misra will himself demit office on October 2, followed by Justice Kurian Joseph on November 29 and Justice Madan B Lokur on December 30. Nedumbassery human trafficking case: Verdict out

A Special CBI Court convicted the seven accused in the case of human trafficking in Nedumbassery, Kochi on Saturday.Out of the accused, four convicts were given 10 years imprisonment and Rs 2 Lakh penalty. The remaining three were given seven years of imprisonment along with Rs 52,000 penalty.One of the seven accused is absconding.According to the reports, the case pertains to the illegal trafficking of women from Kerala to brothels in West Asia. The trial proceedings were completed at the CBI Court.The Crime Branch, in its report, had also said that they suspected the involvement of police officers in aiding the human trafficking racket that had allegedly been operating through the Cochin international airport at Nedumbassery, for several years.

Deadly church shoot-out after 5 S.African police killed

Seven suspects accused of killing five South African policemen were shot dead by officers in a bloody gunfight outside a church, according to investigators. The shoot-out erupted when police hunted down the armed gang that is alleged to have stormed a police station in Eastern Cape province and killed five officers and a retired soldier on Wednesday. "The group which uses a church as a hiding place was cornered inside the church premises," the Hawks police investigative unit said in a statement. "A gun battle between suspects and police ensued which left seven suspects dead and a task force member injured in the legs." It added that 10 other suspects were arrested, while some escaped the scene near Ngcobo, the town where the policemen were killed. 'Three more Iranian environmentalists arrested'

Three environmentalists have been detained in Iran, a conservative-linked news website has reported, the latest in a series of arrests of wildlife campaigners in the Islamic republic. "Members of the Association for the Protection of Nature in Lavardin were arrested by a security agency. The allegations against them are unknown," Tabnak reported late yesterday. It said they were arrested in Bandar Lengheh in the southern Hormuzgan province on the Gulf coast. It follows the arrest of eight members of the Persian Heritage Wildlife Association, Iran's most prominent nature NGO, in January on espionage charges. Its founder Kavous Seyed Emami, 63, died in prison around two weeks later. Officials say he committed suicide in his cell, but the family have questioned the verdict and say they were threatened by officials. Need to introspect on effectiveness of POCSO Act: Justice Lokur

Justice Madan B Lokur today said time has come to "introspect" on the "effectiveness" of the law to protect children from sexual abuse and what has been achieved in the nearly six years since the enactment of the POCSO Act. He said there is a need to carry out an "assessment of the impact" theProtection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 has had on the criminal justice delivery system. Justice Lokur said despite there being more number of cases of child abuse than murder, "we spend more time discussing murders" and wondered "is murder of an adult more important than child sexual abuse". He was addressing a conference, organised by NGOs Haq Centre for Child Rights and Centre for Child and Law, on protecting children from sexual abuse and implementation of the POCSO Act. The Supreme Court judge stressed on the need for a complete overhaul of the criminal justice delivery system under the POCSO Act so that the courts set up under this law deal only with child sexual abuse .

Man gets life imprisonment for raping teenage daughter

A court here has awarded life imprisonment to a 38-year-old man for raping his teenage daughter which led to her becoming pregnant twice. Additional District Judge N R Pradhan, in his order, convicted the man under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Public Prosecutor Kadambini Khandagle informed the court that around three years back the man raped his daughter aged between 12 and 16 at Kolkata where he lived. Later, he forcibly brought her to Mumbai and raped her. He had left his wife and two other children at Kolkata, the court was told. The victim gave birth to two children, of which one survived and another died within 15 days of birth. Following a complaint, the man was arrested and the DNA of both the children matched with that of him, the court informed. Mumbai: Toddler kidnapped, rescued within 6 hrs

The Mumbai Police rescued a 2.5-year-old girl within six hours, after she was abducted from outside a shop in Mumbai's Saki Naka area.The incident came to light on Friday, when the child, Shireen Fatima, while playing outside her father's shop, disappeared from the sight.A 28-year-old man was arrested in the matter."Fatima was playing outside, but when we came outside to call her she was not there," said the father of the child.The family immediately filed a complaint with the nearest police station.The police started the investigation immediately and checked the CCTV cameras installed in the area.They identified the kidnapper as 28-year-old Sandeep Parab.The motive behind the kidnapping is still not known.The child was safely brought back her to parents.

UP: HC pulls up authorities over noise pollution at religious, public places

The Lucknow division bench of Allahabad High Court has pulled up Uttar Pradesh Prinicipal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar for the unchecked noise pollution from loudspeakers at religious and public places.On a plea filed by Advocate Motilal Yadav, a bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Abdul Moin, has sought an answer from both the Prinicipal Secretary and the chairman of UP Pollution Control Board, in this connection."The procedure of taking permission from district authorities has worsened the attempts at curbing noise pollution," the court's order said.Next date of hearing in the matter is March 12.

France charges man allegedly linked to Barcelona attack

A man has been charged in France over alleged links to a suspect in last year's deadly jihadist attacks in Barcelona and a nearby seaside resort, a French legal source said. The man, in his early 30s, was detained Tuesday in the southwestern town of Albi on suspicion of links to Moroccan Driss Oukabir, alleged to have rented the van used in the Barcelona rampage. A total of 16 people were killed when a van drove into crowds on the popular Las Ramblas boulevard in the heart of Barcelona and in a knife attack in the nearby resort of Cambrils last August.
