An Indian woman and a Nigerian man were arrested by the anti-narcotics sleuths for allegedly indulging in an illegal drugs deal in the national capital, officials said today. Goa resident Sonia Gaonkar (24) and Nigerian Charles Ezih (49) were nabbed by a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) team yesterday as part of its action against drug cartels operating in Delhi, they added. Gaonkar was apprehended from the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station as she was about to board the Mumbai-bound August Kranti Express train and 600-grams of methamphetamine (a party drug) were seized from her possession. The woman told the NCB officials that the drugs were handed over to her by another Nigerian man at Ezih's residence. Ezih was arrested subsequently and a search of his home led to the recovery of 180 grams of cocaine. The two were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the NCB was now looking for the other Nigerian the woman had talked about, the officials said.

Rebuffing the media reports, the Bengaluru Police on Friday clarified that nobody has been arrested in connection with the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh.Police said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has not arrested anyone in the case so far.The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West Bengaluru, said, "Btv is showing that a person has been arrested in connection with Gauri Lankesh murder case. This is false. Two minor girls were found smothered to death in the Moti Nagar area of west Delhi and their mother was named as the prime suspect in the case, police said today. The bodies of Nandini (5) and Akansha (six months) were found on Tuesday morning, they added. The autopsy report pointed at smothering as the cause of the deaths, a senior police officer said. The mother, Suman, allegedly suffered from mental illness and claimed to have "divine visitations", he added. "She is the prime suspect in the case and is presently undergoing counselling," the officer said. During investigation, it came to light that the woman had lied down on the girls during one of her so-called "divine visitations" on Monday night. The girls got smothered because of her weight on them, he said. The father of the victims said he was asleep and found out about the incident the next morning, the officer added.

A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) commandant, arrested in connection with a murder case, was "freed" from the police custody by the force's armed personnel by holding the policemen at gunpoint at the Diamond Harbour police station this morning, the police said. Police in Chhattisgarhs Jashpur district seized fake Rs 200 notes, with a face value of Rs 68,000, and arrested two persons, police said today. Omkar Yadav and Suresh Srivas were arrested yesterday from Farsabahar area here when the two were trying to sell these notes, Jashpur Superintendent of Police Prashant Thakur told PTI. A man was beaten by a mob after he was caught attempting to rape a minor girl here, police said today. When the accused was being beaten, the 16-year-old girl attempted suicide by setting herself on fire, they said. The incident took place yesterday in Murlipura area in the city. Both were rushed to SMS hospital where the girl was admitted with nearly 60 per cent of burn injuries and the man with his leg and hand fractured. The accused was arrested for attempting to rape and was sent to judicial custody by a court today. The girl is being treated at the hospital, a police official said.

An FIR has been lodged against the India representative of the United Nations Population Fund following a complaint of sexual harassment by a former consultant to its Bihar office, police said today. The woman, who served as a UNFPA consultant at its Bihar office from January to December last year, had lodged the FIR at the Patliputra police station against the UNFPA India representative, SHO T N Tiwary told PTI. A woman assistant representative of UNFPA India in Delhi has also been named in the complaint for allegedly mentally harassing the Bihar office consultant by taunts about her character, he said. The Supreme Court collegium today made public the names of 37 additional high court judges it has recommended for appointment as permanent judges of the high courts of Allahabad, Rajasthan, Kerala, Gujarat and Bombay. The collegium in a resolution said it had received certain complaints against some of the recommendees in the high courts of Bombay, Gujarat and Rajasthan, but did not see any merit in them. The recommendations made yesterday by the collegium, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices J Chelameswar and Ranjan Gogoi, were posted on the official website of the apex court.
