Case against MP forest official for demanding bribe

The Lokayukta police today registered a case against a senior Indian Forest Service officer and his driver for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a subordinate who wanted a transfer. Superintendent of Police (Lokayukta) Dilip Soni said that after investigating the complaint filed by Indresh Achale, a ranger in the forest department, a case had been registered under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He said that Achale, currently posted in the Burhanpur forest division, was seeking a transfer to Barwah Forest division and had applied for it last month. It was alleged that instead of issuing a transfer order, the then Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) of Khandwa circle, Ramdas Mahla, had asked for a bribe of Rs 50,000 through his driver Santosh Sitoke. Separatists leaders criticise CID report on Srinagar central jail

The separatists leader today criticised a CID report which claimed that said the Srinagar Central Jail was a hub for recruiting militants, with inmates establishing a "parallel administrative" set-up, ignored by local police, despite warnings by prison authorities. The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) in a statement claimed that the Ameer-e-Zindan institution was a forum facilitating good relations between jail authorities and inmates since Plebiscite Front days. According to the report, accessed by PTI, the inmates have a "parallel administrative set up" with an 'Ameer-e-Zindaan' (chief of prison) appointed by a self-styled 'shura' (a consultative council) for six months. German court jails Sweden's 'laser man' killer for life

A German court today jailed for life a Swedish convicted killer -- dubbed "the laser man" for using a laser-scoped rifle to target immigrants -- for the murder of a Jewish woman. John Ausonius, 64, has already received a life prison term in Sweden for a six-month shooting spree in 1991-92 in which he killed or wounded 11 immigrants. The convict, who was extradited to Germany in late 2016, was today also found guilty of the murder of 68-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor Blanka Zmigrod in Frankfurt in 1992.

Sohrabuddin case: HC says not getting enough assistance from CBI

Almost two weeks after it began day-to-day hearing on petitions challenging the discharge of police officials in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case, the Bombay High Court today said that the CBI had failed to adequately assist it due to which it was still unclear on the agency's overall case. Justice Revati Mohite-Dere said the CBI had failed to put all evidence on record including the prima facie evidence against those discharged to assess whether the same warranted that they be discharged from the case. "It is theprimary duty of a prosecuting agency to place all evidence on record before the court. However, in this case, despite the court's repeated queries, the CBI has chosen to argue only on the role of the two officials whose discharge it has challenged," Justice Mohite-Dere said. Centre dedicates division of cybercrime

The Centre has dedicated a separate division to tackle cyber crimes, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said here on Wednesday.According to the Union Minister, the central government has taken many steps to control cyber crimes in the country."The Uttar Pradesh government is taking action against organised crime and corruption, and preparing a business-conducive environment to make the state a preferred destination for investors," he said at the Uttar Pradesh Investors Summit.

SC expresses concern over possession of flats to homebuyers

Four get life term in kidnap and murder of 11-year-old boy in UP

A local court here today convicted four people for kidnapping and murdering an 11-year-old boy in 2015 and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Additional District Sessions Judge Gaurav Shrivastava also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on accused Vipul, Vicky, Kapil and Pankaj after holding them guilty under sections 363, 302 and 201 of IPC. According to prosecution lawyer Jitender Tyagi, the minor boy was abducted for ransom from the Indra Colony area here on September 8, 2015. His body was later discovered on September 16, 2015.

HC takes serious view of non-appearance of investigating

Taking serious view of non-appearance of investigating officers, the Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu DGP not to send them on special duties on specific dates where their presence is required in courts. A division bench of Justices C T Selvam and N Sathish Kumar passed the order when a habeas corpus plea with regard to missing of a mentally challenged woman came up. "The DGP shall ensure that the proceedings of this court are not hampered by posting the officers on other duty when their presence is necessary before this court on the specific dates of hearing," the court said. It directed the DGP to ensure that police officials whose presence is required at least in so far as HCP's filed by anxious parents, brothers, sisters and relatives of missing persons seeking production of detenues are concerned as such cases are adjourned to specific dates.

Spain court issues national arrest warrant for Catalan separatist in Switzerland

A Spanish court today issued an arrest warrant valid only in Spain for a former Catalan lawmaker who moved to Switzerland to avoid being jailed while she is investigated over her role in the region's secession drive. The Supreme Court "ordered the arrest" of Anna Gabriel, who failed to turn up on Wednesday before a judge for questioning, it said in its ruling. The arrest warrant only applies "nationally", a court spokesman told AFP.

Man held for allegedly raping minor girl

A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl at a village in Kendrapara district of Odisha, police said today. Though the incident took place last week in Badamanga village under Aul police station in Kendrapara district, it came to light only after family members of the girl filed an FIR with the local police on Monday, they said. On the basis of the FIR, police registered a case and arrested the accused yesterday and conducted medical examination on both, police said.

Pramod Mittal passport issue: No coercive steps says HC

The Delhi High Court today directed the Centre not to take any coercive steps against businessman Pramod Mittal in connection with a notice sent to him asking why his passport should not be impounded for concealing information about the criminal cases being faced by him. Justice Rajiv Shakdher however asked the businessman to reply to the show cause notice of December 29 last year issued to him by the passport authority and listed his plea for further hearing on May 23. Mittal is steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal's younger brother. The court also issued notice to the Centre and sought its reply to Mittal's plea challenging the show cause notice. In March last year, the CBI had registered a case of cheating and corruption against Mittal, former chairman of Global Steel Holdings (GSHL), and top former officials of the State Trading Corporation for allegedly causing a loss of Rs 2,112 crore to the public sector undertaking. T'gana IAS Officers' Assn condemns 'assault' on Delhi CS

The Telangana State IAS Officers Association today strongly condemned the alleged "assault" on Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. "From the circumstances of the case, it appears that the assault was a pre-mediated act in order to bully, by use of force, the highest authority in the official executive to surrender to the irregular demands of the political executive for their self interest," the association said in a statement. Woman killed after head gets severed in fodder cutting machine in UP

A 24-year-old woman was killed in a freak accident when her hair got caught in a fodder cutting machine, which severed her head in Bahadurpur village under the Seohara police station area here, officials said today. Kavita was operating the fodder cutting machine last evening when her hair got entangled in its engine, they said. Kavita and her sister-in-law were the only two people at home at the time of the incident, police said, adding that the victim's sister-in-law rushed to help her but before she could switch the machine off, it had already severed Kavita's head from her torso. According to Seohara police station SO Dharam Pal Singh, police came to know about the accident much later as the family cremated the body without lodging a report about the death.

HC to frame issues against Goswami in Tharoor's defamation case

The Delhi High Court today fixed March 7 for framing of issues in a civil defamation suit filed by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor against journalist Arnab Goswami and his channel Republic TV. High Court Joint Registrar Rakesh Pandit sent the matter before the court for framing of issues after Tharoor, Goswami and the TV channel by way of affidavits endorsed the documents and the annexures filed by each of them along with the civil suit. The Joint Registrar had on January 18 fixed the case for conclusion of admission or denial of documents, a procedure laid down in the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) which enables rival parties to a civil suit to admit or deny papers submitted in court. Ishrat: Ex-Guj top cop Pandey discharged for want of evidence

Citing lack of evidence, a special CBI court today discharged former Gujarat in-charge DGP P P Pandey in the 2004 alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others. The court also held that permission to prosecute Pandey, who was government servant, was not taken by the investigating officer from the state before filing of the charge sheet against him, though it was required under section 197 of the CrPC. Special court judge J K Pandya allowed Pandey's discharge application on the grounds that there was no evidence against him related to the kidnapping and murder of Ishrat Jahan (19) and three others. The CBI, which investigated the case, had accused Pandey, who then headed the Ahmedabad crime branch, of being involved in the alleged fake encounter. Woman lodges molestation complaint against Tripura CPI(M)

Police has received a complaint from a woman that two persons, including CPI(M) candidate of Takarjala assembly constituency Ramendra Debbarma, allegedly tried to molest her at her house in Sipahijala district. According to the FIR, two persons, including Debbarma, allegedly tried to molest the woman around 1 PM, when she was sleeping at her house at Amtali, about 35 km from here, and they left when she raised an alarm. Cal HC lawyers' ceasework enter third day

A five-day strike by lawyers demanding filling up of the huge vacancy in the Calcutta High Court judiciary continued for the third day today. The ceasework by the Bar Association had begun on Monday demanding that vacancies of 42 posts of judges in the Calcutta High Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 72 judges, be filled immediately. Judges sat in the almost empty court rooms in the morning as everyday and rose to retire to their chambers after the customary calling of petitions for hearing by the officers as no lawyers were present. A few litigants who had come to the court hoping for a hearing despite the strike were seen. They expressed worry that in addition to the lack of requisite number of judges, the five-day ceasework would increase the pendancy of petitions and thus cause more delay in the hearing of their cases. The government must get a free hand to probe the over Rs 11,000 crore PNB fraud case, allegedly involving billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi, the Supreme Court said today. The top court said it would step in only when agencies fail to carry out the investigation properly. The Centre, represented by Attorney General K K Venugopal, vehemently opposed a PIL, seeking an independent probe and deportation of Nirav Modi, before a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra saying "the inquiry has started and the FIRs have been registered".
