Will hang myself in public if AAP proves allegations: Gambhir on pamphlet row

Stepping up his counter-offensive, BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir on Friday said he will "hang" himself in public if the Aam Aadmi Party can prove that he has any link to the derogatory pamphlet allegedly circulated against his rival and AAP nominee from East Delhi Atishi Marlena. If the AAP fails to prove the allegations, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should quit politics, the ex-cricketer demanded. "Challenger Number 3 to @ArvindKejriwal and @aap. If he can prove that I have anything to do with this pamphlet filth, then I will hang myself in public. Otherwise @ArvindKejriwal should quit politics. Accepted?" Gambhir tweeted. Mother of boy killed in assault by her partner arrested

The mother of a seven-year-old boy, who was killed after being assaulted by her partner in March, was arrested Friday, police said. The 36-year old woman, who was undergoing psychological treatment after the child's death, was arrested from a counselling centre at Koothattukulam in Ernakulam district. The woman, a widow and mother of two including the deceased boy, has been arrayed as the second accused in the case. After battling for life for eight days, the boy had breathed his last at a private hospital in Ernakulam on March 28. "The woman has been charged under IPC 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) and 212 (harbouring offender)," a senior police official told PTI. The main accused, Arun Anand (36), the live-in partner of the woman, was arrested soon after the incident and is currently in jail. Woman, minor daughter die after falling into well

A woman and her daughter died after falling into a well near Apukhedi village in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said Friday. The incident took place Thursday night when Sahiba Bano (35) and her daughter Shalina (4), residents of Kamalpura village, were going to a relative's house in a nearby village and decided to take a shortcut to , Station House Officer (SHO), Kamkheda police station, Rajesh Meena said. The woman, carrying her daughter in the arms, could not sense the well without the boundary walls due to darkness and fell into it, the SHO added. The bodies were handed over to the family members on Friday morning after post-mortem, he said. A case was registered under section 174 (unnatural death) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and further investigation is underway, the SHO said.

Alwar gangrape case: SC/ST Commission wants FIR against 'negligent' cops

National SC/ST Commission Vice Chairman L Murgan on Friday recommended that an FIR be registered against police officers whose alleged negligence led to delay in action in the Alwar gang rape case. Murgan along with Commission secretary Pritam Singh, Rajasthan Chief Secretary D B Gupta and DGP Kapil Garg held a meeting in Alwar to review the progress in the case, which has triggered wide-spread outrage in Rajasthan. "I have asked that negligent police officers should be booked under section 4 of SC/ST Act, charge sheet should be filed within 15 days and the case should be monitored on a daily basis. The family has demanded government job. I have asked the district magistrate to see how it can be provided, Murgan told reporters in Alwar after the meeting. Indian jailed in UK for sexual assault on plane

An Indian travelling to the UK on a tourist visa has been jailed for 12 months for carrying out a "prolonged" sexual assault on a young woman during a long-haul flight from Mumbai to Manchester earlier this year. Hardeep Singh, 36, will be deported back to India at the end of his sentence. Singh, who pinned the woman passenger down on her seat during the flight, was sentenced to 12 months in jail at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester on Thursday. "From the outset of the flight, Singh's behaviour was despicable. Indian-American judge fast tracks case of Trump's subpoena by Congress over his financial records

An Indian-American judge has fast-tracked the case of US President Donald Trump's challenge of a subpoena by Congress over financial records of his accounting firm, saying he will decide the full case after a hearing next week, according to a media report. US District Judge Amit P. Mehta made his announcement Thursday in a brief notice to both sides after receiving a first round of written arguments in the case. Mehta said that he will decide the full case and not just whether to temporarily block the subpoena while the case proceeds, after a hearing on May 14, The Washington Post reported. HC allows accused to take Manipur Civil Service exam in custody

The Delhi High Court has allowed a man lodged in jail, facing prosecution in a murder case, to take the Manipur Civil Service examination. The court said that as the exam is scheduled on May 12, the accused be taken to Imphal by economy flight on Saturday and brought back to Delhi on May 13. "Accordingly, Superintendent Jail is directed to have the petitioner taken to Imphal by economy flight. The cost of the ticket of the petitioner shall be borne by him. NGT slams MoEF over failure to submit report on policy for groundwater conservation

The National Green Tribunal has slammed the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) over its failure to submit a report on issuing appropriate policy for conservation of groundwater. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said lack of sensitivity of serious issues of environment such as fast depleting groundwater is a matter of concern. "MoEF has failed to perform its duty for which no explanation has been furnished. No affidavit has been filed. On being asked, counsel for the MoEF has informed the Tribunal that the Committee was constituted only on March 299 and not within two weeks from January 3 as directed. "The committee has not yet given its report. We do not appreciate such attitude of government departments when under a statutory enactment, violation of orders of this Tribunal is a criminal offence. UK police launch murder investigation into Indian-origin man's stabbing

UK police has launched a murder investigation after an Indian-origin man was found stabbed in a supermarket car park near London. The 24-year-old is yet to be named officially but has been identified locally as Mohammed Nadeemuddin from Hyderabad. Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping and sexually assaulting a nun in Kerala, Friday appeared before a magistrate court in Pala. The Pala Judicial First Class Magistrate Court (JFMC), which issued summons to the accused last week directing him to appear before it on May 10, accepted his plea seeking further extension of bail. 35 people detained for protesting against CJI at Mandi House

Thirty-five people, including 25 women, were detained Friday for trying to carry out a protest march at Mandi House against the enquiry procedure adopted in the sexual harassment complaint against CJI Ranjan Gogoi, a senior police officer said. The Bombay High Court has quashed an FIR in a case of rape here after the victim submitted that she and the accused were now married and were residing together "happily". In an order passed last month, a bench of Justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre quashed the FIR registered by the woman last year against the man on charges of rape and cheating under Sections 376 and 420 of the IPC, respectively, at a police station in Mumbai. However, last month, the couple approached the court, saying they had been in a consensual relationship at the time of the alleged incident of rape and that the woman had registered the FIR after the man refused to marry her.
