Three held for running interstate drug cartel

Three people who were allegedly running an inter-state drug cartel were arrested and 5 kg of heroin estimated to be worth more than Rs 20 crore was seized from them in outer Delhi, police said today. The arrested have been identified as Ram Nath (26), Virender Pal Singh (29) and Parvej khan (64), all residents of Budaun in Uttar Pradesh. On February 13, the Special Cell of the Delhi police received a tip off about two of the accused coming to Bhagwan Mahavir Marg in outer Delhi to deliver a huge consignment of drugs to a city-based drug dealer, a senior police officer said. Accordingly, a trap was laid and a Bolero car was spotted on the road going towards Barwala-Prahladpur. The car was stopped. The occupants first resisted and tried to escape but were apprehended. Police recovered 4 kg heroin from their possession. Congress MLA son arrested in pub assault case

The son of Congress MLA NA Haris got arrested in connection with a case of an assault at a pub in Bengaluru on Monday.Mohammed Haris Nalapad was accused of assaulting a youth at a pub in Karnataka's UB city mall on Saturday.According to the media reports, an FIR was registered against Mohd. Woman killed, foreman injured in blast in fireworks factory

: A woman was killed and a foreman seriously injured in an explosion at a private fireworks factory at Sengundrapuram in this district today, police said. They said the explosion followed a fire at the unit, which gutted 15 sheds, killing the woman on the spot and seriouly injuring the foreman. All the workers were evacuated, they said, adding it was not exactly clear how many workers were there at the unit at the time of the blast. The reason for the blasts was being ascertained, they said.

British judge sentences prolific pedophile to 32 years

A British judge sentenced a prolific pedophile to 32 years in prison today in what the UK's national law enforcement agency described as a watershed moment for coming to grips with technology's ability to support and spread depravity. Geophysicist Matthew Falder admitted to 137 offenses, including blackmail, voyeurism and encouraging the rape of a child. Posing as a female artist looking to do life drawings, Falder, 29, lured victims into sending him humiliating images, many of which ended up on the dark web. He approached 300 people worldwide, some of them teens advertising for babysitting or dog walking jobs online. Falder also hid cameras in bathrooms to record women and girls naked. He even set up a camera in the home of his parents. In an online post titled "100 things we want to see at least once," he listed "a young girl being used as a dartboard," and the production of a video depicting a child's bones being "slowly and deliberately broken." Karnataka Cong MLA's son booked for attempt to murder

Ruling Congress MLA N A Haris' son Mohammed Nalapad Haris,who allegedly assaulted a man at an upscale pub-cum-restaurant here and surrendered today before police amid high drama, has been booked for attempt to murder. "Police have booked a case against Nalapad under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code," DCP (Central) Chandragupta told PTI. Iraq hands 6-year jail term to German jihadist teen: judiciary

An Iraqi court has sentenced a German teenager to six years in jail for membership of the Islamic State group and illegal entry into the country, a judicial source said today. The source told AFP that the girl, aged 17, was on Sunday handed a five-year term for belonging to IS and one year in prison for crossing illegally into Iraq. On January 21, a German woman of Moroccan origin was sentenced to death by hanging on charges of providing "logistical support and helping the terrorist group to carry out crimes". The two Germans are among hundreds of foreign suspected jihadists held by Iraqi authorities, who in December announced the defeat of IS after a gruelling three-year battle. According to media reports in Germany, the condemned woman, named Lamia K, had left Mannheim in August 2014. 4-yr-old girl crushed under truck, driver arrested

A four-year-old girl was today crushed to death by a speeding truck in Narela area of Rohini, police said. The accident occurred when the girl had gone to relieve herself today morning, they said. The driver of the speeding truck lost control due to potholes in the road, they said, adding he was arrested after some labourers present on the spot caught him and handed over to the police. Parents of the victim worked as construction workers and lived in a temporary camp nearby, the police said.

SFIO to investigate 110 companies, 10 LLPs in PNB scam

The government today ordered the SFIO to probe around 110 companies and 10 limited liability partnership entities related to diamantaire Nirav Modi and his business associate Mehul Choksi, according to sources. Modi and Choksi have come under the scanner of multiple agencies in the wake of the nearly Rs 11,400 crore fraud disclosed by state-owned Punjab National Bank. Sources said the corporate affairs ministry has ordered the SFIO to investigate around 110 companies, including some listed ones, and about 10 LLPs linked to Modi and Choksi. The Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) mainly probes white collar crimes. Multiple agencies, including the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate, are already probing the fraud, which was perpetrated by way of fraudulent Letter of Undertakings (LoUs).

PNB Scam: IT dept attaches seven more properties of Gitanjali Group

The Income Tax department on Monday attached seven more properties of the Gitanjali Group, in connection with Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, sources have revealed.Within these seven properties, four properties are registered in the name of Gitanjali Gems, while two belong to Mehul Choksi, the Managing Director of Gitanjali Gems and also the maternal uncle of Nirav Modi.Further, one property registered is in Gili India's name. HC refers to larger bench ques on arrest of accused in money laundering case

A division bench of the Delhi High Court today referred to a larger bench questions pertaining to the arrest of an accused in a money laundering case. The issue concerns two provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) relating to the power to arrest a person and the need to supply the grounds of arrest to him under section 19 and whether the offence is cognisable or non-cognisable under section 45. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta said it did not concur with the view taken by another division bench of the high court on section 19 of the PMLA. The bench said it has a view different from the other bench which interpreted section 19 in the case of businessman Moin Akhtar Qureshi and Vakamulla Chandrashekhar holding that the phrase 'as soon as may be' in the provision implies that the grounds of arrest need not be supplied at the time of arrest and the failure to do so would not render the arrest illegal. Kerala Police today rejected charges that the real culprits had not been booked in the killing of a Youth Congress functionary and claimed two CPI(M) workers were arrested on the basis of clear evidence about their involvement in the crime. Striking HC lawyers to continue ceasework till Feb 23 Cuttack

The striking lawyers of Orissa High Court today decided to continue their ongoing ceasework till February 23 to protest the alleged ''inadequate'' number of judges in the court, High Court Bar Association sources said. The Bar Association at a general body meeting here also decided to launch a hunger strike from tomorrow, not to file any fresh case and restrain their clients from conducting their own cases. The Orissa High Court at present has 16 judges, including the chief justice, against a sanctioned strength of 27. There has been no appointment of judges in the high court since May 2015 and over 1.72 lakh cases, including PILs, were pending here till December 2017, the Bar Association sources said. The lawyers have been boycotting courts from February 12 to protest the non-filling of vacancies in the post of judges in the high court and the problems in listing important matters for hearing. HC to hear Mehul Choksi's plea for quashing FIR

The Delhi High Court will tomorrow hear a crucial petition filed by Gitanjali Gems promoter Mehul Choksi seeking quashing of an FIR lodged against him for allegedly cheating an engineer's firm in 2016. Choksi's petition is likely to come up before a bench of Justice Mukta Gupta. The FIR against the diamond merchant was lodged in 2016 on the orders of a metropolitan magistrate in Saket court here after a complaint was lodged by B.Tech graduate Vaibhav Khuraniya alleging that his company RM Green Solutions purchased a retail franchise of Gitanjali Jewellers from Choksi on an assurance of high returns. Cheque bounce case against MP minister

A magistrate's court in Indore today registered a cheque bounce case against Madhya Pradesh minister Surendra Patwa. Judicial Magistrate M P Namdeo ordered registration of a case against Patwa under the Negotiable Instruments Act after examining the documents submitted by a local firm, Harish Traders, which had approached the court. The court also issued a summons to Patwa, asking him to appear on May 7 and make his submissions. Complainant's lawyer Sanjay Tiwari said that Patwa, in his capacity as the head of a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), had borrowed Rs 10 lakh from Harish Traders for his family business, but he defaulted on repayment. Later, he gave a cheque of Rs 10 lakh, which bounced as there were insufficient funds in the bank account, and he didn't pay up even after repeated notices, the lawyer said.

Murder convict escapes from police custody, three cops suspended

A murder convict escaped from the police custody today with the help of his associates, who threw chilli powder in the eyes of the police personnel accompanying the prisoner during a hospital visit in central Delhi, leading to the suspension of three policemen. Sanjay alias Dhillu, aged around 40 years, belonged to Bahadurgarh in Haryana. He was convicted in a murder case and lodged in the Mandoli jail. He was also undergoing trial in some other cases, said a senior Delhi Police officer. Church land sale: Another petition against cardinal in Ker HC

Another petition has been filed in the Kerala High Court, seeking registration of a criminal case against the head of Syro-Malabar Church, Cardinal George Alanchery, over alleged irregularities in land deals involving the church, causing huge loss to his archdioceses. When the petition came up before Justice Kemal Pasha today, he directed the state government to inform the court of its views on the same. The matter would be heard on February 22.
