Man rapes minor girl in J-K

A 45-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl after luring her from a wedding function in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, police said today. A written complaint was lodged at Reasi police station by the father of the victim, stating that on February 14, when all the family members were busy in a marriage ceremony, the accused lured his daughter from there, they said. He took her to a nearby cattle-shed where he allegedly raped her and threatened her of dire consequences if she revealed the incident to any one, he said. A case was registered in this connection, he said, adding that further investigation was underway.

Use of Tricolour in support of Kathua rape-and-murder accused is desecration: J&K CM

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today despised a rally by a right-wing group for using the Tricolour and demanding the release of a police officer arrested in the Kathua rape-and-murder case. She was referring to the rally taken out by the Hindu Ekta Manch yesterday in Jammu, demanding the release of Special Police Officer Deepak Khajuria, who was arrested last week in connection with the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district in January. "Appalled by the marches & protests in defense of the recently apprehended rapist in Kathua. Also horrified by their (protesters') use of our national flag in these demonstrations, this is nothing short of desecration," Mehbooba tweeted. The accused was under arrest and the law would follow its course, the chief minister added.

Cauvery verdict: Kamal Haasan shocked by reduction in TN's share

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan on Friday said expressed shock at the Supreme Court's verdict on Cauvery River water dispute that reduced Tamil Nadu's share in the disputed waters."I am also shocked at the reduction in the supply of water. I have to get more details about the actual judgement but I think the Supreme Court firmly said that water cannot be owned by any state. That's a consoling factor," Haasan said at a press conference here.In its verdict on the dispute earlier the same day, the Supreme Court allotted an additional 14.75 TMC of river water to the state of Karnataka and reduced Tamil Nadu's share from 192 TMC to 177.25 TMC.The parties to the dispute were the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, who challenged the 2007 order of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) on the sharing of Cauvery, the Ganga of southern India.Haasan is set to venture into politics with the aim to change the political status quo of Tamil Nadu.

Virbhadra Singh PMLA case: ED arrests businessman

The Enforcement Directorate today arrested a businessman in connection with its money laundering probe against Congress leader and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and others, officials said. They said Vakamulla Chandrasekhar, the director/promoter of Tarini Group of Companies, was arrested from here late last night by the central probe agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He will be produced before a special court here today. The agency earlier said that Chandrasekhar "had provided an amount of Rs 5.9 crore to Singh and his family members through his three personal bank accounts". When the source of funds was enquired into, the ED said, "it came to light that the said amount was received through a web of firms indulging in accommodation entry operation." Poll candidates must disclose their income source: SC

The Supreme Court on Friday directed that election candidates will have to reveal the sources of their income, including those of their spouse and dependents.The court was hearing a plea filed by an NGO Lok Prahari seeking disclosure of income sources of candidates contesting elections when they file nomination for polls, regarding an alleged increase in assets.The Supreme Court bench of Justices J. Chelameswar and Abdul Nazeer pronounced the judgment on NGO Lokprahari's plea on the assets of legislators.While filing their nomination papers, candidates have been disclosing their assets, assets of their spouses, children and other dependents, but they were not revealing the sources of income, the NGO's plea read.It had demanded inclusion of a column in the nomination form to list details of a candidate's sources of income.Allowing the petitioner's plea, the Bench said, "Only those which require amendment of the law are not allowed as it is up to Parliament to take a decision."As many ..

INX Media: ED raids Karti Chidambaram's associates

One dead, 11 hospitalised after suspected gas leakage

A 34-year-old worker died and 11 others were hospitalised after suspected leakage of hazardous gas in a rayon manufacturing unit at Shahad in Kalyan in the district, police said today. The incident took place late last night, they said. "The process of mixing of three different gases was in progress at the unit, when around 11.30 pm some workers complained of nausea, eye irritation and suffocation, possibly due to leakage of hazardous gas. They were rushed to a hospital," a police officer said. One worker, identified as Sanjay Sharma, died of suffocation and a case of accidental death was registered at Ulhasnagar city police station in this connection, police said. According to police, 11 others were admitted to a private hospital in Kalyan and are said to be out of danger. Investigation into the case is on.

Decomposed body of missing woman found stuffed in trolley bag

The decomposed body of a woman customer care operator was found stuffed in a trolley bag at an apartment of a banker couple in Durgapur following which the man and his wife were arrested, police said today. The deceased, identified as Shilpa Agarwal, used to operate a 'sahayak kendra' of a nationalised bank from her house at Mejia in Bankura district, the police said. The arrested man, Rajiv Kumar was the manager of the same branch, the police said. Agarwal had told her family that she was going to visit her aunt's house at Asansol in West Burdwan district on Friday. She was missing since Saturday and her family had lodged a complaint with the police. Police said they had received a complaint about stench emanating from the trolley bag kept in the store area of the apartment. SC directs Karnataka to release 177.25 tmcft Cauvery water to TN

The Supreme Court today directed the Karnataka government to release 177.25 tmcft of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from its inter-state Biligundlu dam. The judgement clarified that Karnataka will now have an enhanced share of 14.75 tmcft water per year while Tamil Nadu will get 404.25 tmcft, which will be 14.75 tmcft less than what was allotted by the tribunal in 2007. Earlier, in accordance with the 2007 award of the Cauvery water dispute tribunal, Karnataka had a share of 270 tmcft of Cauvery water. This will now increase to 284.75 tmcft. The much awaited judgement was pronounced by a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar, which had on September 20 last year reserved the verdict on the appeals filed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala against the 2007 award of the tribunal. NY charges two Bronx brothers over explosives

A former teacher and his twin brother were arrested and charged in New York with possessing explosives following a bomb threat made against a Manhattan school, officials said.
