MP: SIT to probe abduction and rape charges against Cong MLA

The Madhya Pradesh police have formed a nine-member special investigation team (SIT) to probe the allegations of abduction and rape levelled by a journalist student against Congress MLA Hemant Katare, an official said today. Last week, the police had booked Katare on the charges of abduction and rape, following a complaint lodged by the 21- year-old student, who was arrested for allegedly extorting money from the legislator. "We have constituted a nine-member SIT to investigate all the cases related to Katare (Congress MLA from Ater in Bhind district). Three different cases were registered in this regard by the crime branch, women police station and Bajaria police station," Bhopal Deputy inspector general Dharmendra Choudhary said. The leader of the opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Ajay Singh, and others had met Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently and demanded a fair probe into the case. Maid held for hurling acid on elderly-woman

A maid was today arrested for allegedly throwing acid on a 74-year-old woman while attempting to snatch her gold chain, police said. The incident took place at the victim's house in Sector-2 of MVP Colony here yesterday after which the maid K Ramanamma (35) was apprehended, a senior police official said. Ramanamma worked at the Art Gallery. The victim is a wife of retired judge and the couple resided near the Art Gallery, the officer said. After the retired judge had gone for his evening walk, Ramanamma entered their house, took the acid bottle, which is used for toilet cleaning, hurled the acid on the elderly woman and attempted to snatch her gold chain, the officer said. When the victim raised an alarm, the neighbours rushed to her house and nabbed Ramanamma and handed her over to police, the officer said. Initially, the maid was detained and subsequently arrested, he said, adding the victim is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Adopted child is a legal heir of parent: HC

The Madras High Court today made it clear that an adopted child is a legal heir of a parent and should get all the rights just like a biological child. Justice K Ravichandrabaabu gave the ruling while allowing a petition from M G Mamtha and her adopted daughter C Soundarya challenging the rejection of their application for grant of legal heir certificate by a revenue department official. The judge directed the tehsildar of Dhenkanikottai in Krishnagiri district to issue the legal heir certificate to them which they had applied after the death of Mamtha's husband and adoptive father of Soundarya last year. The tehsildar had rejected the application on the ground that the second respondent being an adopted daughter cannot be considered as Class I heir as per the Hindu Succession Act. Mamtha and her husband S Chandrasekar had adopted Soundarya, daughter of the former's brother, in 1987 as per the family's custom and a deed of adoption was entered into on November 24, ...

CID seizes Rs 2.4 crore from residence of former IPS officer

The CID of West Bengal Police today seized around Rs 2.4 crore from one of the residences allegedly belonging to former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh during a raid in connection with their probe into case of misconduct and extortion from civilians case, a senior officer said. The money in Rs 500 and Rs 100 denomination, were recovered from one of the three residences in the city allegedly belonging to Ghosh, he said though declining to specify its location. "We had to broke into the almirah where we found this amount. So far we have found money only. No gold ornaments were found," the IPS officer confirmed. No documents were seized, he added. The CID had pasted notices at the three residences in the city reportedly belonging to Ghosh and asked her to appear before the investigating officer within three days in connection with their probe into the case. Constable outrages modesty of minor Dalit girl, escapes

A constable in the special branch (intelligence) wing here allegedly outraged the modesty of a 12-year-old Dalit girl today and escaped, following which police have launched a hunt for him. Her mother filed a complaint against the constable at the all women police station here after the incident. Police said the constable was later transferred to Armed Police. However as the woman had given a complaint, action had been initiated against him, they said, adding he would be suspended in a day or two.

Murder convict arrested along with associates

A murder convict, who ran a gang of mobile snatchers, has been arrested along with his associates from the Nizamuddin area of the city, police today said. The accused, identified as Israel (34), who was in jail for 14 years in a murder case, and his associates Anis (23) and a juvenile, were arrested near Hazrat Nizamuddin earlier this week, Deputy Commissioner Of Police (south east) Chinmoy Biswal said. He had killed one Kamal in Seelampuri in 2000 and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case, the official said. After being released from jail, he had formed a gang and employed juveniles for snatching mobile phones near Hazrat Nizamuddin, Biswal said. The gang used to travel from their base in Sahibabad (Ghaziabad) in a hired auto and escape in it after snatching mobile phones, he said. Vice-Chancellor arrested on graft charge suspended

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit today suspended a Vice-Chancellor who was arrested for alleged graft, saying the charges levelled against the academic were "serious." A Ganapathi, Vice-Chancellor of Coimbatore based Bharathiyar University, was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption last week for alleged graft in relation to teacher appointment. "In exercise of the inherent powers vested in the Governor of Tamil Nadu, in his capacity as the Chancellor of the University A Ganapathy has been placed under suspension with effect from February 6, 2018," a Raj Bhavan release said. The suspension will continue until further orders, it added. The release recalled that Ganapathi was arrested by DVAC "on charges of bribery and he has been subsequently remanded to judicial custody." Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case: Son records statement

A special CBI court today recorded the statement of Omprakash Nimbalkar in connection with the murder case of his father Pawanraje Nimbalkar. Nimbalkar was killed in June 2006 and former MP Padamsingh Patil is the key accused in the case. Omprakash in his deposition told the court about the strained relationship between his father and Patil. He also said that his father had filed a few police complaints Patil. Omprakash told the court that his father was elected director of Terna Sugar Factory and later became director of Osmanabad District Central Co-operative Bank Ltd with the help of the accused. He also claimed that Patil was not happy with rising popularity of his father. He further said in 2002 the district bank invested Rs 30 crore in a firm named M/s Home Trade, but it the bank did not get the money back. The trial began in July 2011. 11 get life sentence in Bihar in 18-year-old murder case

A court here today awarded life imprisonment to 11 convicts in a murder case filed 18 years ago. The fast-track court of judge Ram Vinod Singh sentenced the 11, all residents of Nahalpur village under the Parasbigha police station area, for killing Sogni Bind on January 1, 2000. According to the FIR lodged by Sheikh Bind, one of the brothers of the victim, he and Sogni Bind, along with another sibling Ujna Bind and his wife Seetapati Devi, were attacked with bricks and stones by the convicts over a dispute. All the four were seriously injured in the attack and Sogni, who was referred to the PMCH hospital in Patna, succumbed to his injuries subsequently.

Kasganj: Muslims being targetted by investigators, says Azmi

Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi today alleged that Muslims are being targetted by investigators in the aftermath of the Kasganj communal riots in Uttar Pradesh. "Now it is clear that the communal hatred was planned in Kasganj and Muslims were instigated or provoked, leading to clashes between two communities. Now, in the name of investigation, Muslims are being unnecessarily targetted," the Maharashtra unit president of the Samajwadi Party told reporters at a press conference. Man held for smuggling gold worth Rs 65 lakh

The air intelligence unit of Mumbai Customs today arrested a man for allegedly smuggling 3.4 kilograms of gold worth Rs 65 lakh, a senior official said. "The passenger Ashit Narula, who arrived from Hongkong, was apprehended and later arrested when the gold were seized from him," the official said. According to him, the gold was concealed in a broad based support belt beneath Narula's shirt. The recovered gold consisted of roll of gold, hollow flex tube of of 14KT and 18KT purity, he said, adding Narula admitted its possession.

Suspended ASI fires at and injures SHO in Bihar

A suspended assistant sub-inspector (ASI) tonight shot at and injured the station house officer (SHO) of a police station in Kathihar district, suspecting that the latter was responsible for his suspension, a senior police officer said. According to Superintendent of Police, Katihar, Siddharth Mohan Jain, SHO of Sudhani police station Rakesh Raman was injured when ASI Zakir Hussain opened fire at him. Raman received the gunshot in his arm and was rushed to a hospital for treatment where his condition was stated to be stable, the SP said. He said Hussain, who fled after the attack, was suspended recently following a public agitation in December last year wherein locals had accused him of having wrongfully detained one person. Bhima-Koregaon violence: Arrest warrant against Ekbote

A court today issued an arrest warrant against right-wing leader Milind Ekbote, booked for allegedly inciting violence on January 1 during an event to commemorate the bicentenary of the Bhima-Koregaon battle, police said. A case was registered against Ekbote and Sambhaji Bhide, who head the Hindu Ekta Aghadi and Shivraj Pratishthan respectively, for allegedly "inciting" violence that left a man dead near Bhima Koregaon on January 1. Cop booked for having 'affair' with married woman kills self

A 23-year-old police constable, booked for having an "affair" with a married woman, allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train near Moula Ali railway station here, police said today. K Sandip Kumar was apparently under depression after a local TV channel "widely highlighted" his alleged affair with the woman, they said. The Government Railway Police (GRP) received information from railway officials in the early hours today that abody of a man was found on tracks near the station, following which a GRP team was dispatched. After reaching the spot, they identified the body to be of Sandip, a GRP official said. Police arrests naxalite for demanding levy from company

A naxalite was arrested from Bihar's Rohtas district for demanding levy from the manager of a construction company engaged in road construction, a senior police officer said today. Superintendent of Police Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said the naxalite belonging to the Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) was arrested from Saraiya village yesterday night. The arrested naxalite was part of the squad of 30 naxalites who had reached at the office of a company engaged in the construction of Tilauthu-Dehri national highway and had demanded levy from its manager on January 21, Dhillon said. During the interrogation, the arrested naxalite has "admitted" his involvement in the incident and has also revealed names of his accomplices who were part of the squad which demanded levy from the manager of the company, SP said. The company had lodged a written complaint with the police about the incident after which an SIT was formed in this regard.
