Two policemen arrested for demanding bribe from scrap dealer

Two policemen from Raigad were today arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a scrap dealer, officials from the Thane unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau said here. Vivek Joshi, Deputy Superintendent of Police of ACB's Raigad unit said that a police inspector and a constable had demanded Rs 8,000 from a scrap dealer, who in turn filed a complaint with the ACB. ACB officials said that a trap was laid at Revdanda police station in Raigad's Alibag area during which the two, identified by police as Inspector Prakash Sapkal (49) and Constable Balkrishna Jadhav (38), were arrested. An official said that Jadhav had come forward to accept the money on behalf of Sapkal during the trap laid by the ACB. The two were charged under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, officials said, adding that further investigations were underway.

HC sets aside CAT order dismissing woman's plea in harassment

The Delhi High Court has set aside an order of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) dismissing an application for impleadment filed by a woman staffer of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) who had accused a senior officer of sexual harassment. It held that this case cannot be put in the category of a conventional service matter where, once the employer gets a complaint against an employee from another staffer and disciplinary proceedings are initiated, the role of the complainant ceases. The CAT, in its order, had said service jurisprudence did not permit a right of audience to the victim. Hence, she could not participate in the proceedings pending before it, the tribunal had said while rejecting her application. The tribunal was hearing a petition filed by a senior legal officer in the Enforcement Directorate, who was found guilty by the Competent Disciplinary Authority (CDA) of sexually harassing the woman. Woman accuses men of barging in house, attempting rape

A woman has accused five persons of barging in her house in the Kotwali Sakeet area when she was alone and allegedly trying to rape her, police officials said. According to the officials, based on the woman's complaint an FIR has been lodged under section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation is in progress. According to the FIR, the woman has alleged that last week five persons entered her house and eve-teased her. The woman has alleged that the men wanted to rape her but she shrieked and her family members reached the spot. The accused fled, she claimed in her complaint, according to police officials. We are investigating the matter, no arrest has been made so far in this connection, the officials said.

Iran confirms it granted brief leave to ailing US citizen

Iran's judiciary has confirmed that it has granted leave to an ailing 81-year-old US citizen convicted of espionage. The judiciary's website, Mizanonline.ir, quotes spokesman for the judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi as saying "I think his leave has come to an end today or yesterday," referring to jailed Iranian-American dual citizen Baquer Namazi. Ejehi said Namazi was not freed but had his three-day leave extended for another three days for medical checkups. The temporary reprieve came almost two years to the day after he was arrested in Iran while trying to secure the release of his son, Siamak, a businessman who had been arrested a few months earlier. 10-yr-old girl raped in Punjab

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 17-year-old neighbour at Ramnagar village here, a police officer said today. The incident occurred on Friday when the girl was alone at her home, Muktsar SHO (Malout) Paramjit Singh said. The accused was arrested and was sent to juvenile home, Singh said. A case under relevant sections, including section 376 (rape) of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012 was registered against the accused, he said.

NRI woman in HC, seeks transfer of rape case to crime branch

A 32-year-old NRI woman, who was allegedly raped by a businessman here, has moved the Delhi High Court, seeking transfer of her case to the crime branch of the city police. The plea came up for hearing before Justice Indermeet Kaur who issued notice to the Delhi Police and sought their stand on the woman's plea. Congress leader and former law minister Ashwani Kumar has alleged that the CBI's decision to move the Supreme Court in the Bofors case was "politically motivated" and a "gross act of malice", and held that the matter will be decided in the "peoples' court". Fourth man charged in Indian-origin jeweller's murder in UK

British police have charged a fourth man in connection with the kidnap and murder of an Indian- origin jeweller who had been found dead in the city of Leicester last month. RamniklalJogiya,74, had gone missing as he walked home from work and was later found dead in a nearby lane, triggering a murder investigation by Leicestershire Police. Man facing criminal charges stones police official to death

A 42-year-old man, facing criminal cases, today allegedly killed a police official in a gruesome manner, suspecting that the latter was responsible for his arrests in the past. Both the victim Shivaji Shinde (45), a head constable at the local crime branch, and accused Pulja Singh Thakur lived in Datta Nagar area under Shivaji Nagar police station limits, a senior police official said. Earlier, four cases were registered against Thakur at various police stations. According to the officer, Thakur, who was out on bail, was suspicious that Shinde was responsible for his arrests in the past. A criminal carrying a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head was arrested in Sitapur's Taalgaav area following an encounter, police said today. In a statement issued by the office of the UP Director General of Police here, a spokesperson said, "Late last night, during an encounter in Maanpur village, criminals started firing at the police, after they were surrounded." Pak actress killed for refusing to perform at stage show

A Pashto theatre actress was shot dead by three gunmen after she refused to go with them for a private event in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said. 85 jailed in China for selling fake cure for baldness

Eighty-five people in China have been jailed for running a multimillion-yuan snake oil scheme claiming to provide a cure for baldness, a media report said today. Three founders of the ring and their employees were found guilty of fraud in the court in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, on Thursday this week, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported today. The three ringleaders were given sentences varying from 11 to 13 years, while subordinates were ordered to serve to terms ranging from one to six years, the report said. A minor girl was allegedly raped by nine people, who used to blackmail her using her photos and videos, on separate occasions over a year in suburban Vile Parle and six of them have been arrested, police said today. Road contractor's employee killed by Naxals in Chhattisgarh

Naxals killed a 24-year-old man, employee of a road contractor, in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Dantewada district, police said today. The deceased man's 10-year-old sister-in-law was also injured in the incident at Gatam village under Katekalyan police station limits, a local police official told PTI. Manoj Podiyam (24), the deceased, was working as an accountant ('munshi') with a private contractor engaged in road construction work in the area.
