Navi Mumbai police today said that cases of chain snatching was on the decline there and 2017 saw 92 cases getting registered, down from 296 in 2015 and 118 in 2016. Addressing the annual press conference to present crime statistics, Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale attributed it to concerted efforts by his force, adding that the detection rate of chain snatching cases stood at 52 per cent for 2017. He added that cases of cheating also saw a dip with 394 cases being registered in 2017 against 563 in 2015 and 410 in 2016. Nagrale said that cases of murder hovered around the 40 mark, like the years in the past, and 2017 saw 43 murder cases being registered. He added that 93 per cent of all these cases got detected. The city also saw 128 cases of rape being registered and police had managed to detect 95 per cent of them, the Commissioner informed. Multiplex operator PVR and its managing director and chairperson Ajay Bijli have settled case with markets regulator Sebi over alleged violation of listing norms after paying over Rs 23 lakh. Bijli and PVR paid Rs 20.40 lakh and a little over Rs 2.80 lakh, respectively, towards the settlement, according to a Sebi order dated January 24. On January 5, PVR had informed the stock exchanges that Sebi has agreed to settle the matter related to alleged certain provisions of the erstwhile Listing Agreement and LODR (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations. In November 2016, Sebi had issued a common show cause notices to both the entities. Following adjudication proceedings initiated by the regulator, Bijli and PVR had filed a common application in January 2017 proposing to settle the matter. Undeclared gold worth over Rs ten lakhs was seized from a passenger who arrived from Muscat at the airport here today, Customs officials said. The officers of Air Intelligence Unit, Air Customs, found two gold chains totally weighing 349.70 grams kept concealed in a specially stitched pouch in the socks worn by the passenger, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. The passenger is a resident of Kozhikode district. The gold valued at Rs 10.67 lakhs was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act,1962. Kumar said a strict vigil was being maintained by Customs sleuths at the airport in view of a spurt in smuggling cases.
The Supreme Court today granted relief to some lawyers whose office located in the basement of a building in the posh Hauz Khas market here was sealed, asking the South Delhi Municipal Corporation to de-seal it. A bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta issued notice to the SDMC which assured the court that necessary action would be taken during the course of the day. Additional Sessions Judge Sukhvinder Kaur rejected the application filed on behalf of Lalit Goyal, whom the police has been referring to as a "partner" of factory owner Manoj Jain, who is already in police custody in connection with the probe in the January 20 fire tragedy. "The allegations against the accused (Goyal) are serious in nature and matter is at the initial stage of investigation. 17 persons died in the incident. A local court here today awarded 12 years of rigorous imprisonment to the father-son duo in connection with seizure of 3608 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) from their house in Vaishali district two years back. Additional District and Sessions Judge (II) of Excise Special Court Bholanath Tiwary held Mohammad Ali Ashraf Khan and his son Mohammad Afsar Ali Khan guilty under provisions of the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016 and awarded 12 years of jail to each of them and imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh separately to them. The sentence was served under section 47(A) of the Act. The court made it clear that they would have to spend another eight months in jail if they fail to deposit the fine amount. Both the sentences would run concurrently, it added. A Congress worker, husband of the Nalgonda municipal chairperson, was found dead in a drainage, with police suspecting that he was hit with a stone. Boddupalli Srinivas, the husband of municipal chairperson Lakshmi, left home late last night after receiving a phone call from one of his followers, police said today. According to the preliminary information, Srinivas tried to intervene in a clash involving his followers during which someone hit him with a stone, police said. The body was later found in a drainage, police said, adding that further probe was on. Condemning the incident, Telangana Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that it was a case of political murder.
The National Green Tribunal has refused to review its order directing devotees to maintain silence while standing in front of the Amarnath 'shivling' in the cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas. The green panel said there was no "patent error" in its last year order and the direction was passed in the interest of the environment as well as the Amarnath cave shrine, which is a place of faith for many devotees. A Delhi court on Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Lalit Goyal, a co-accused in the massive fire that ravaged a factory in Delhi's Bawana and perished 17 people to death.Goyal, however, is absconding even as another accused, Manoj Jain, was sent to five-day police custody yeaterday.Initial probe revealed that the ill-fated factory allegedly manufactured and stored "cold firecrackers", which are used in Holi celebrations.The police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the Indian Penal Code sections relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligent storage of explosives.The maximum punishment under the sections could be 10 years.

The National Green Tribunal has rapped the civic bodies for not submitting data on the quality of water supplied to households in the national capital by the Delhi government despite repeated directions. Irked at the approach of the authorities, a bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice U D Salvi summoned on January 31 the CEO of Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Cantonment Board, Chairman of Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) and Commissioner of New Delhi Municipal Council. "It is pointed out that organisations DJB, New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Cantonment Board and CGWA were to provide requisite data and that the data has not been collected, collated and analysed so far. "Let CEO of DJB, CEO of Delhi Cantonment Board, Chairman of CGWA and Commissioner of New Delhi Municipal Council shall remain present before the tribunal on the next date of hearing January 31," the bench said. Palghar police have arrested a Nigerian national for allegedly peddling drugs and have seized drugs worth Rs 6 lakh from him. Inspector Bharat Jadhav of Nalasopara police station said that, based on a tip off, Nigerian national Sirki Lasmen Dumaya was arrested yesterday from Hanuman Nagar area. The official said that 310 grams of banned drug mephedrone was seized from the accused. He said that Dumaya had been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, adding that further investigations were underway.
A 24-year-old woman was critically injured after she was allegedly set on fire by her husband for refusing to give him money to buy liquor in Bhiwandi town of the district, police said today. The incident occurred on January 21 when the woman, identified as Ashwini Magar, had an argument with her husband Amol Magar (26) who demanded money to buy alcohol, Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar said, adding that in a fit of rage, Amol doused his wife in Kerosene and set her ablaze. On hearing her cries, neighbours of the Magars rushed to the spot and rushed Ashwini to civil hospital. She suffered 80 per cent burn injuries in the incident and is currently battling for her life, Narkar said. Amol also suffered burn injuries to his hand and is undergoing treatment, she said. "He does odd jobs to make living and has been a habitual drinker," the officer said. Police have booked Amol under various sections of the IPC for murder and other charges.
Economic offences bring total imbalance in the national economy, a Delhi court has observed while refusing bail to two directors of a real estate firm alleged to have duped over 8,000 investors. Special Judge Kamini Lau also rapped the economic offence wing of Delhi Police for clubbing all complaints together in one FIR and said it was an attempt by it to dilute the allegations against the accused. The court denied bail to Avdhesh Kumar Goel and Atul Gupta, directors of Earth Infrastructure Limited, saying such offences deserved to be dealt with due degree of seriousness and gravity, having regard to their detrimental effect on the economy.
