Upset with NIA, Punjab cobbler commits suicide
Upset over being questioned repeatedly by the NIA in the murder case of a Hindu leader in Punjab, a cobbler committed suicide on Tuesday by jumping into an irrigation canal near Khanna town, around 70 km from here, police said.
SC asks Centre to set up tribunal to resolve Mahanadi dispute
The Supreme Court today directed the Centre to set up a tribunal within a month to resolve the long-standing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the sharing of water from river Mahanadi. A bench of Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao asked the Centre to constitute the tribunal and said that all pending issues can be raised before it. The apex court, however, refused to grant any stay as sought by Odisha government on the seven pick up weirs (small dams) across the Mahanadi river, which flows through Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha before pouring into the Bay of Bengal. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for Odisha government, said there cannot be any negotiation on the issue and the only way the dispute can be resolved is through the constitution of a tribunal. Michigan man arrested over threats to kill CNN staff
A Michigan man has been arrested on the charges of making a call at the CNN's Atlanta headquarters and threatening to kill its employees.The man, Brandon Griesemer, was arrested on Friday from the home that he shares with his parents in Novi, near Detroit, according to federal court records.Griesemer could face up to five years in prison if convicted.He was later released on a $10,000 bond by the judge, Anthony Patti, following an initial hearing, where he was represented by a public defender.According to an FBI affidavit, Griesemer made 22 calls to CNN on January 9 and January 10, and four calls, which were recorded, contained threats, according to the affidavit, reported CNN."Fake news. Gujarati businessman chargesheeted under anti-hijacking laws
A Gujarati businessman, accused of planting a note about hijackers and a bomb in the toilet of a Mumbai-Delhi flight, was today chargesheeted by the NIA under the anti-hijacking laws, which may invite life imprisonment if proven guilty. After a detailed probe, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed the chargesheet at a special court in Delhi against accused Birju Salla alias Amar Soni under various sections of the Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016. Salla allegedly planted the note about hijackers and a bomb in the toilet of a October 30, 2017 Mumbai-Delhi Jet Airways flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Ahmedabad, a release issued by the NIA said. Flight 9W 339, which had taken off from Mumbai with 115 passengers and seven crew members, was diverted to Ahmedabad early morning that day. Suspect's DNA matches sample from minor girl in Pak
A 23-year-old neighbour has been arrested in the brutal rape and murder case of a minor girl and his DNA sample matched with the sample found from the victim's body, days after the heinous crime in Kasur city in Pakistan's Punjab province sparked a national outrage. Police sources confirmed suspect Imran Ali, a neighbour of the seven-year-old victim, had confessed to his crime before an investigation team. Forensic specialists confirmed that the DNA sample from accused Ali matches with the sample found from the girl's body, Geo News reported, citing its sources. The accused's DNA also matches the samples taken from seven other minor girls who were abused and murdered earlier in the area, it said. Ali was known to the girl's family and would also frequent her house, police sources said. Have tendered unconditional apology in Delhi HC: Judge to SC
A senior woman judicial officer of Delhi today informed the Supreme Court that she has tendered an unconditional apology in the high court, which had earlier ordered initiation of contempt and departmental enquiry against her. A division bench of the Delhi High Court, on December 22 last year, had ordered initiation of contempt and enquiry proceedings against Additional District Judge Kamini Lau after taking note of her alleged objectionable words used in four applications seeking expunction of adverse remarks passed by a single judge bench of the High Court in as many civil appeals. An apex court bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice D Y Chandrachud had on January 15 stayed the high court's order while asking Lau to tender an unconditional apology in the high court, saying it "wanted to protect" her for future as well. A resident of Uttar Pradesh (UP), working as a street hawker, was arrested for alleged abduction and rape of two girls of Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, police said today. A woman had yesterday lodged a complaint with the police that her three minor daughters along with another girl were missing from their houses in Reasi district, a police officer said. Police registered cases at Reasi police station and then formed joint team of Jammu and Reasi police to trace the girls, the officer said. During the investigation, involvement in abduction of girls by the accused, a native of Nalwa-Muzaffarnagar of Uttar Pradesh, currently working as a street hawker, was found and he was apprehended today, he said. An SUV belonging to former Union minister Natwar Singh that was stolen from Gurgaon in December has been recovered, the police today said, suspecting its use in last week's firing incident in Rajasthan's Churu district in which one person was killed and two others injured. The Fortuner car, which was stolen in Gurgaon on December 25 last year, has been recovered and seized. Its engine and chassis number have been matched with the looted vehicle, Superintendent of Police, Charkhi Dadri (Haryana), Himanshu Garg told PTI over the phone. Man ends life, family says he was being quizzed by NIA in Shiv
A cobbler, reportedly being questioned by the NIA in connection with the killing of Punjab's Shiv Sena leader Durga Das Gupta, today allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Sirhind canal in Fatehgarh Sahib district. Passersby saw Rampal (52) jumping in the canal and informed the police. His body was fished out about two km downstream, the police said. His family members claimed that the NIA wanted to make Rampal a witness in the killing of Gupta and and he was fed up with constant questioning by the investigating agency. On November 30 last year, the Punjab government handed over seven cases, including killing of right wing and religious leaders to the NIA keeping in mind the possible "national and international ramifications" of a conspiracy behind the targeted killings in the state. Two killed in road accident in Odisha
A mother-son duo were killed when a motorcycle on which they were travelling hit a truck parked along a road in Odisha's Ganjam district today, police said. The incident happened near Kanchuru on National Highway 59, about 20 kilometer from here, under the jurisdiction of Hinjili police station. The two were on their way to attend a feast at Hinjili, said the inspector-in-charge of Hinjili police station, Prasant Kumar Sahoo. The deceased were identified as 29-year-old Siba Shankar Das and his mother 60-year-old Chandrama Das of Kanchuru. The bodies were recovered from the spot and sent for post-mortem examination at MKCG Medical College here, he said.

The Delhi High Court today said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has a right to be allowed to confront a witness with documents in connection with a defamation suit filed by Union Minister Arun Jaitley against him, but he was not following proper legal procedure. The court's remarks came during the hearing of an appeal filed by Kejriwal challenging a joint registrar's decision to dismiss his plea to summon the minutes of meetings of cricket body between 1999 and 2014 in the suit. Jaitley, who was the President of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) from 2000 to 2013, has filed the defamation suit against Kejriwal who had alleged that there was corruption during his tenure. "You should be allowed to put these documents to the witness but you are not following proper legal procedure" Justice Manmohan said. 3 drug peddlers, including an 80-yr-old man, arrested in J-K
Three alleged drug peddlers, including an 80-year-old, were today arrested from Srinagar and Baramulla districts of Jammu and Kashmir in separate cases, the police said. "A notorious drug peddler -- 80-year-old Abdul Khaliq Khan -- was today arrested from Tangmarg area of Baramulla district," a senior police official said. He said 322 grammes of cannabis was recovered from Khan's possession and a case has been registered against him. Khan was allegedly supplying the contraband to the youth in the vicinity of Kunzer in Tangmarg area, the official said. In another case, police arrested two notorious drug peddlers and recovered contraband from their possession, a police spokesman said. Rajiv case: SC asks Centre to decide on TN letter on remission
The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to take a decision within three months on a 2016 letter by Tamil Nadu government seeking its concurrence on releasing seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The letter written on March 2, 2016, had said that while the state government has already decided to release the seven convicts, it is necessary to seek the Centre's concurrence as per an apex court order of 2015. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, A M Sapre and Navin Sinha allowed the application moved by the seven convicts and asked Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand to take a call on the letter of the state government within three months. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for Tamil Nadu government, also supported the demands of the convicts and said the Centre should respond to the letter. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on the night of May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu by a woman suicide bomber, identified as Dhanu, at an election rally.
