A Mumbai court today remanded Ramesh Gowani, co-owner of Kamala Mills compound, in police custody till January 29 after he was arrested in connection with the deadly fire at two pubs which claimed 14 lives last month. He was arrested yesterday. "Today we produced him before the court, which sent him in police remand till January 29," said Virendra Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone-III). "We will investigate his role in the lapses that led to the fire," the DCP added. Gowani was arrested on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the IPC. The Supreme Court today made it clear that the National Investigation Agency cannot probe the marital status of a Kerala man and a woman, alleged to be a victim of 'love jihad', saying it was concerned about the choice of an adult to marry someone. The observation came when a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was informed by the NIA that it has made "substantial progress" in its probe in the case as per the direction of the apex court. The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said the NIA could investigate the matter but the issue of marriage has to be separated from any criminal conspiracy or criminal aspect. A district court in Thane awarded life imprisonment to five persons today for killing Sanjay Rokade, a Shiv Sena worker, in the city in 2014. District and Sessions Judge P R Kadam also directed the Maharashtra director general of police (DGP) to initiate a departmental inquiry against former investigating officer (IO), who is now retired, for carrying out "improper" probe into the case. A 23-year-old neighbour has been arrested in the brutal rape and murder case of a minor girl in Kasur city in Pakistan's Punjab province, days after the heinous crime sparked a national outrage. Police sources confirmed suspect Imran Ali, a neighbour of the seven-year-old victim, had confessed to his crime before an investigation team. Ali was known to the girl's family and would also frequent her house, police sources said. K M Ashokan, father of Hadiya who is at the centre of an alleged love jihad case, today accused the Left-led Kerala government of supporting extremists in the matter. The Maharashtra government today denied in the Bombay High Court the allegations that the police in Malegaon had ordered the externment of a local 'gau rakshak' as they were opposed to his cow protection efforts. In an affidavit, the state government submitted that it had inquired into the allegations of Macchindre Shirke that he was being targeted because of his efforts towards cow protection. However, the inquiry revealed that Shirke had a criminal history and several serious cases were registered against him, the state government said. "The petitioner (Shirke) has several cases against him dealing with serious offences such as culpable homicide, theft and property feuds. A drug peddler was arrested and cannabis recovered from him in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district today, a police officer said. During routine checking, police intercepted a vehicle at Akramabad in Doda and during the search recovered 250 grams of cannabis from a person, he said. A former Andhra Bank director has been sent to judicial custody (JC) by a court here following his arrest and interrogation in connection with a money laundering probe in an alleged Rs 5,000-crore bank fraud case involving a Gujarat-based pharma firm. The Pune Police today informed the Bombay High Court that it has transferred the case of alleged fraud and misappropriation of funds of the Osho Rajneesh Trust to its Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The police informed this to a division bench headed by Justice B R Gavai which was hearing a petition filed by Pune resident Yogesh Thakker. The petitioner had alleged that the spiritual guru's signature was forged in his will by the trustees of the Osho International Foundation. While an FIR was lodged with the Pune police last year, Thakker claimed the police had not made any substantial progress in the probe and hence, sought a direction to the CBI to take over the investigation. The court had last week sought to know if the case could be transferred to the EOW for a specialised investigation. A Chinese man has been arrested by the customs for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth Rs 52 lakh at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here, according to an official statement today. The accused was intercepted on his arrival from Dubai on Saturday. "A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 15 gold bars, totally weighing 1.7 kg, ingeniously concealed inside the waistline of the trouser worn by him," it said. The market value of the gold bars, which have been seized, is Rs 52.28 lakh, the statement by the customs department said. The accused, who is a native of China, has been arrested, it added.
The police has registered an offence against four persons, including a police officer, after a 28-year-old man here allegedly committed suicide, an official said today. Amit Jha, residing in Virar area of the district, allegedly consumed a poisonous substance on Saturday. He died at a hospital in Mumbai yesterday, a police official said. Amit Jha is the brother of Vikas Jha (24), who had tried to set himself ablaze in November last year inside the office of a deputy superintendent of police, a police officer said. Vikas Jha had also tried to set the DySP on fire, the officer said. Amit Jha had alleged that police did not take any action in the case involving his brother and hence consumed poison, the officer said. Their father complained to police that Amit ended his life due to alleged harassment by four persons, police said. Based on a complaint, the Palghar police today registered an offence for abetment of suicide against the four persons, including a police officer.
Four persons have been arrested from Canning station in South 24 Parganas district and 314 cartridges were seized from their possession. Police officials said the persons belonging to Sonakhali and Choradakatiya villages of the district, had procured the cartridges from Bihar and had boarded a Caaning-bound train after disembarking at Sealdah station. An MBBS student studying at a private medical college here allegedly hanged himself to death in his hostel room, police said. Joel Joseph (20), a native of Kerala, took the extreme step last evening, they said. In a press release issued by the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), Medical Superintendent William Bhatti said, "He was a brilliant student and had just come back on January 8 after winter vacations". The victim's parents, who are also in the medical profession, live in Kuwait. Bhatti said the parents have been informed about the tragedy. Harjinder Singh, SHO, PS-3 said they found a sentence written on the wall of Joel's hostel room in English, saying, "I am responsible for my death".
