Police have arrested the owner of the firecracker storage unit in Bawana where 17 people were killed in a massive blaze yesterday. Manoj Jain, who ran the factory, has been arrested. A probe revealed it was a factory of "cold firecrackers" used in stage shows and Holi celebrations, said Rajneesh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini). Firecracker packages found at the site suggest the same, he said. Jain had rented the factory from January 1, the DCP said. Seven of those killed have been identified as Baby Devi (40), Afshana (35), Sonam (23), Reeta (18), Nadeen (55), Rakho (65) and Dharma Devi (45), he said. The fire had started in the storage unit on the ground floor of the two-storey building and ripped through the structure. Of the 17 killed, ten were women. A man and woman were injured. Police said an FIR had been registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and negligent conduct with respect to fire .
A woman from Thailand has been arrested for allegedly running a sex racket, police said today. Acting on a tip-off, a team of officials raided a spa in Virar area of the district and arrested the 43-year-old Thai woman yesterday, Assistant Police Inspector S A Ingole said. Two women, one of them from Thailand, were rescued during the raid, he said. The accused woman was operating the flesh trade racket from the spa for the last one year, the police said. The police sent a decoy to the spa and trapped the accused, they added. The rescued women, aged 23 and 25, were sent to a shelter home in Boisar, the police said. The accused woman was booked under the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act. She was produced before a local magistrate who remanded her to police custody till January 23, they added.

It will cost the government nearly Rs 8 crore annually to run 12 special courts to try the over 1,500 cases related to lawmakers, the law ministry has informed the cabinet secretariat. The proportion of the amount for the states, where the 12 special courts will come up, is being worked out. "An estimated expenditure of Rs 7.8 crore to make 12 courts operational for one year has been prepared. The proportionate allocation to the states where such courts would be set up is being worked out," Secretary (Justice) in the law ministry wrote to Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha earlier this month. Last November, the Supreme Court had directed the government to come up with a scheme to set up 12 special courts to try 1,581 criminal cases pending against elected MPs and MLAs. The top court said that it is not interfering with the conviction of Madan Mohan Kabiraj but looking at his age, he can be accorded benefit of provisions of Probation of Offenders Act. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three private persons, residents of Delhi, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 1.80 lakh from the complainant, an owner of a club in Delhi's Pitampura.The probe agency CBI has registered a case against two accused under section 120-B and Section 8 of PC Act, 1988 on a complaint received from the owner of the club.The complainant had alleged that the SDM, Saraswati Vihar had sealed the said club.The accused had demanded a bribe on behalf of SDM, Saraswati Vihar, Delhi for getting the complainant's said club desealed.The CBI laid a trap and caught the two accused along with one more person while demanding and accepting the bribe.Searches were conducted at the residence of all the three accused persons at Delhi, which led to the recovery of incriminating documents.The relevant documents have also been collected from the office of SDM, Saraswati Vihar, Delhi. A 55-year-old man, who was admitted to a hospital here, died allegedly after falling from a bed at the health facility, police said today. Ram Phal died on Thursday and his family members today lodged a complaint, alleging negligence by doctors and hospital staff, they said. He was admitted to the Metro Hospital for fever, Phal's son Sukendra Kumar said. Kumar alleged that doctors admitted his father in the emergency ward and asked him to stay outside, despite he informing them that he was the only relative present at that moment. Prem Bahadhur Ramkhadka (52), who hailed from Nepal and worked as a security guard in Sathenagar area, was stoned to death late last night, police said. Police today arrested three more persons in connection with the deadly fire at two pubs in Kamla Mills compound here which claimed 14 lives last month. Three people have been booked for allegedly demanding Rs 20 lakh as extortion from a doctor who runs a nursing home in Sahibabad area, police said today. Udaiveer Singh has filed a police complaint and named his son's in-laws, and named his father-in-law and his two sons in connection with the extortion call. "It appears to be a matrimonial dispute of the doctor's son as his wife is not living with him for five years," Assistant Superintendent of Police Anoop Singh said. He said the matter was being probed. According to police, Singh was fired upon by unidentified assailants on the night of Jan 7-8. On Jan 10, he received the extortion call.
