SC sets aside HC order on strictures against judicial officer

The Supreme Court has set aside an order of the Himachal Pradesh High Court by which action was recommended against a judicial officer for granting bail to an accused within four days of rejection of his pre-arrest bail by a higher court. The high court had termed the action of the magistrate as "judicial impropriety" and "gross indiscipline" and recommended the chief justice to take appropriate action on the administrative side. It had set aside the order of magistrate and cancelled the bail plea of an accused, arrested for allegedly giving fake educational degrees to students for money. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said the approach of the high court was "erroneous in law" and set aside the order of single judge of the high court. Accused on the run for 6 years arrested in UP

An accused in several cases of robbery, on the run for over six years, was arrested from a forest area in a village here, police said today. Kamal Hasan, who carried a reward of Rs 10000 on him, was arrested in the forest area of Ichoda village yesterday, Sub Inspector Shiv Kumar, of Ratenpuri police station, said. Hasan was wanted in several cases, including the robbery of Manpura Ashram in which two priests were shot dead in 2012, he said.

Five killed in arson attack on Seoul motel

Five people were killed and four others were hospitalised today in an arson attack on a motel in downtown Seoul, police said. A 53-year-old man who said he started the blaze was arrested. Witnesses said a delivery man carried out the attack in a fit of anger after being denied a room at the two-story motel for allegedly being drunk. The man, identified only by his surname Yu, bought 10 litres (around two gallons) of petrol at a nearby service station, poured it on the ground floor and set it ablaze, they said. Neighbours used fire extinguishers in an attempt to tame the blaze but were unable to bring it under control.

Dallas family sentenced to prison over stomping pregnant teen

Three members of a United States (US) family in Dallas, who beat a pregnant teen and stomped on her stomach, until she miscarried, have been sentenced to prison.The Dallas Morning News reports that the now-19-year-old victim was eight months pregnant when she was attacked in 2013.Sharon Jones, 47, was sentenced to 12 years, while her daughter Cecila McDonald, 28, got seven years, and 29-year-old son, Cedric Jones Jr., was sentenced to five years in prison.Each pleaded guilty to felony family violence aggravated assault.Another man was convicted of aggravated assault in 2016 and sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with the 2013 assault.The victim, now 19, reported the attack in 2015.The victim's brother, 24-year-old Robert Cayald, faces an aggravated sexual assault charge in the case. He was found incompetent to stand trial last year, and his case is pending.Cayald is accused of raping his 13-year-old sister in August 2012, which resulted in pregnancy.

Girl, who stabbed class 1 student, granted interim bail

The accused girl, who allegedly stabbed a class 1 student of Lucknow's Brightland School, was on Friday released on interim bail.The accused, a student of Class 6, was granted bail till January 30, after being presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.The class 1 student, who is admitted in King George's Medical University (KGMU) trauma centre, was attacked with a kitchen knife by his senior on Tuesday .The matter came to light on Wednesday after the KGMU authorities revealed about it to the media.The police were informed about the incident by the school when the reporters reached the trauma center.Lucknow SSP Deepak Kumar, while talking to media, said that they have sent the hair found on the body of the victim for a DNA test."A kitchen knife was used for the attack. US SC to review Trump travel ban

The United States Supreme Court has announced that it would decide the legality of President Donald Trump's ban on travellers from six mostly-Muslim nations.The court will start hearing arguments in April and intends to issue a final ruling in June on an issue that has been repeatedly struck down by lower courts, reports The Independent.The case the court will hear stems from a lawsuit filed by Hawaii, some of its residents and a Muslim group based there. They say the travel ban has no precedent in U.S. history.According to the Hill, the SC concurred to hear two cases from the state of Hawaii and the International Refugee Assistance Project challenging the previous order, which banned nationals from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Sudan and Yemen for 90-days and excluded all refugees for 120 days.But the court ultimately tossed out the cases after the order expired. Minor commits suicide to escape molestation

A 14-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district committed suicide after a two men tried to rape her while she was going to relieve herself in the open.The miscreants of the village had been molesting the minor girl for the past two years. She had also left her studies to save herself from molestation.However, the accused groped her and tried to rape her when she was going for defecation on Thursday.The police have sent her body for the postmortem and arrested the accused.Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, who visited the grieving family, assured strict action against the accused while warning them to mend their ways.

FBI investigating new person of interest in Vegas shooting:

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking at a new person of interest in connection with the October mass shooting at a concert in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead, the county sheriff said Friday. The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, killed himself after the rampage, which he carried out from his suite in a hotel on the Strip in the gambling hub. "I know and believe there's only one suspect who killed 58 people and injured hundreds more. All the evidence recovered in this case supports that theory," Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo told a press conference. Lombardo said charges were unlikely to be brought against Paddock's girlfriend Marilou Danley, but added: "As to any other people, the FBI has an ongoing case against an individual of federal interest. UP minister visits village after child killed in encounter

Uttar Pradesh Minister Shrikant Sharma today visited Mohanpur Aduki village in Mathura, where an eight-year-old boy was killed in alleged police firing. On Wednesday, Madhav was killed allegdly during a police encounter with criminals in the village. The villagers allege that the child was killed by police gunshot, but the police say he may have been caught in the crossfire with the criminals. Four police personnel were involved in the encounter. They have been suspended. Six more have been sent to police lines. SSP Swapnil Mamgai has sent the six to police lines for their alleged role in the killing of Madhav, said police PRO Sanjeev Tyagi. Sharma said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was "pained" on Madhav's death. "Guilty would not be spared," he said.

Kotkhai rape and murder: HC rejects bail plea of IGP Zaidi

The Himachal Pradesh High Court today rejected the bail plea of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Z H Zaidi in connection with thecustodial death of an accused in the Kotkhai rape and murder of a minor girl. The court had heard the bail plea on January 12 and reserved the judgement which was announced today. Rejecting the bail plea, Justice Sandeep Sharma observed that it would not be appropriate to grant bail to the petitioner at this stage. It further observed that the alleged crime was of serious nature anda detailed investigation was required in this case. Zaidi and seven others were arrested in the custodial death case of Suraj, who was found dead in the Kotkhai police station on July 18 night. Man sentenced to 7 yrs in jail for rape

A court here today sentenced a man to seven years of imprisonment for raping a woman on the pretext of providing her a job. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Rajesh Yadav along with the sentence, Assistant District Government Counsel (ADGC) Rajiv Kumar said. The complainant, who was living alone after separation from her husband 12 years ago, had accused Yadav of raping her on the pretext of giving her a job, he said. She had said that the man had promised her a better job than that she currently had at a mall here. The victim had lodged the complaint on March 8, 2013, Kumar said.

US court imposes $ 5mn penalty on Dr Reddy's over drug

A federal court in the US today imposed a USD5million civil penalty on the North America subsidiary of India's Dr Reddy Laboratories for distributing prescription drugs in blister packs that were not child resistant, the Department of Justice said. "Dr Reddys failed to ensure that children were protected from potentially harmful prescription drugs," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Chad A Readler of the Justice Department's Civil Division. The court in New Jersey imposed the fine after a complaint that Dr Reddy Laboratories (DRL) failed to comply with the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) and the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA). "Child-resistant packaging is a critical safety measure put in place to protect our country's children, said CPSC Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle. Youth stabbed to death in college campus

A youth was stabbed to death in the premises of a college here today allegedly by a person known to the victim, police said. Neither the accused nor the victim, Vishal Kumar, was a student of the college and it appeared that Kumar had gone to the college accompanying the sister of the assailant. Kumar was attacked with a knife when he was standing in a queue with the girl to submit a form, police said. The attacker was trying to flee after committing the crime but was caught by the students of the college and handed over to the police. A profusely bleeding Kumar was taken to hospital in a car at the directive of college Principal Sushil Kumar Toppo, who also informed the police about the incident. Salve files complaint after threats over 'Padmaavat'

The Delhi Police today registered a case following a complaint by senior lawyer Harish Salve who was allegedly threatened for representing one of the respondents connected to the controversial Bollywood film "Padmaavat" in the Supreme Court. The court had dismissed a petition seeking deletion of certain alleged objectionable scenes from Sanjay Leela Bansali's film, calling it premature. Salve represented one of the respondents in the apex court. He had received a phone call on his office land line and was allegedly threatened for speaking in favour of the film, the police said.
