Eight arrested for hacking mangroves near creek in Thane

The Thane city police today arrested eight people for allegedly destroying mangroves along the Kolshet creek. Police said that arrests were made in the early hours of today based on a complaint by the revenue department under the Thane District Collector. Senior police inspector T Baravkar of Kapurbawdi police station said that an offence under relevant sections of the Environment (Protection) Rules of 1986 had been registered against 11 persons. Police said that three persons, who the police identified as contractor Jaggu Khetwani, Usha Rai and one Nitin, are yet to be arrested. The eight labourers arrested had been hired by the contractor to carry out the destruction of mangroves, police said.

SC verdict in 2012 proved UPA's 2G policy was corrupt

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today cited a Supreme Court verdict to assert corruption in the UPA government's 2G spectrum allocation policy, and mocked the Congress by saying it was treating a trial court's acquittal of the accused in the case as a badge of honour. With the Congress going on the offensive following the judgement, Jaitley said today's verdict held that nobody was guilty in the case and investigation agencies would take an appropriate decision, taking facts and history into account. The Enforcement Directorate has already said it will appeal against the judgement while a CBI spokesperson said it would study the verdict and take a decision over it soon. "Its history is of corruption. Facts have proven it. Landmine blast kills 1, injures 4 in Balochistan

At least one person was killed and four others were injured in a landmine explosion in Balochistan's Dera Bugti area on Thursday.The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital.Security forces have reached the spot and are investigating the matter and further details are awaited.Meanwhile, in a separate incident, at least six people of a family were shot down at their house in Toba Nuhakani in Dera Bugti after unidentified persons opened fire on them.The victims have been identified as Gujjar, his two wives and three children.

Reliance ADAG welcomes 2G verdict acquitting its executives

The Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) today welcomed the judgement of the special court acquitting its three top executives and Reliance Telecom Ltd in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case. Three top executives of Reliance ADAG -- Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair were acquitted in the case. "Reliance Group welcomes the court verdict," a statement issued by the company said. They were facing trial along with former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others. The CBI had alleged that there was a loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the exchequer in allocation of licences for the 2G spectrum which were scrapped by the top court on February 2, 2012. 2G scam case wasn't one of criminality: Rohatgi

Former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on Thursday said the 2G spectrum allocation scam case was never an issue of criminality.His statement came after a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Thursday morning acquitted all the accused, including former telecom minister A Raja and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi, in the case."The prosecution's main argument was on clause 8. It was a civil issue. Raja, Kanimozhi, corporate honchos walk free in 2G cases

Former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and all other accused were today acquitted in the politically-sensitive 2G spectrum allocation scam cases by a special court which held that the prosecution "miserably failed" to prove the charges. The fifteen other accused allowed to walk free include former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja's erstwhile private secretary R K Chandolia, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Unitech Ltd MD Sanjay Chandra and three top executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) -- Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair. Swan Telecom promoter's brother welcomes 2G scam verdict

Hussain Balwa, brother of Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa, on Thursday welcomed a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court's verdict on the 2G spectrum allocation cases and said that they knew all along that justice would be served."We are relieved of the huge tension we had. Cong should not treat 2G verdict as badge of honour: Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the Congress should not treat the 2G verdict as a "badge of honour". The party's "zero loss theory" was proved to be wrong when the apex court squashed spectrum allocation in 2012, the minister said after a special court acquitted all accused in the 2G spectrum scam allocation case. Though the trial court verdict says nobody was guilty of corruption, investigating agencies will study the case history and look into it, the minister asserted. "The Congress is treating 2G verdict as a badge of honour, but its zero loss theory was proven wrong when the Supreme Court quashed spectrum allocation in February 2012," Jaitley told reporters. Israeli man held with satellite phone at Mumbai airport

A 23-year-old Israel national was arrested for allegedly possessing a satellite phone, which is banned in India, at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here, a police official said today. Based on a complaint by the officials of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the Sahar police arrested Tsamret Ido, an ex-Army man from Israel, on Tuesday, she said. After Ido landed at the Mumbai airport, the CISF, during security check, found a satellite phone in his luggage following which he was apprehended and later arrested, the official said. Ido, who was in India on a tourist visa, was scheduled to go Goa from here through a connecting flight. An offence was registered against him at the Sahar police station under relevant sections of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, she said. Lawyer tells US court Ukraine oligarch's extradition on hold

A lawyer for a Ukrainian oligarch charged in an international bribery case says an Austrian court has put his client's extradition on hold. Dan Webb filed a letter with the information yesterday in Chicago federal court, where Dymitro Firtash is accused of a conspiracy to pay bribes to mine in India. Firtash has business ties to President Donald Trump's ex-campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and has denied wrongdoing. Webb says an Austrian Supreme Court recently stayed Firtash's extradition while it rules on a request to reconsider its initial extradition order. Webb had told Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer that Firtash could be extradited by the end of 2017. But his letter says it's now unlikely he'll face extradition "in the immediate future." Firtash was arrested in Austria in 2014 and is free on bail.

The CBI today said it would study the special court verdict on the 2G spectrum scam case and then decide the future course of action. Former telecom minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi were today acquitted by a special court in the 2G spectrum scam case. Fifteen other accused in the case and three companies were also acquitted. "We are yet to receive the complete judgement. We will study it, take legal opinion and decide future course of action," CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said.

Justice delivered: DMK leader Kanimozhi on 2G verdict

DMK MP Kanimozhi today said justice has been delivered after the special court acquitted her and others in the 2G spectrum allocation scam cases. "There is no evidence against me and justice has been delivered," Kanimozhi told mediapersons after the verdict was pronounced. Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha MP and daughter of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi, was accused of conniving with former telecom minister A Raja and other co-accused in "parking" of illegal gratification of Rs 200 crore in Kalaignar TV Pvt Ltd, of which she was a promoter.

Essar Group hails court verdict acquitting its promoters

The Essar Group today welcomed the judgement of the special court acquitting its promoters Ravi Ruia and Anshuman Ruia in a case arising out of the probe into the 2G spectrum allocation scam. "We are thankful to the court for the judgement as it vindicates our stated position and the court has appreciated it," an Essar spokesperson said in a statement. Besides Ruias, the court also acquitted Vikash Saraf, one of the Essar Group Directors, Loop Telecom Promoters I P Khaitan and Kiran Khaitan, three companies-- Loop Telecom Ltd, Loop Mobile (India) Ltd and Essar Teleholdings Ltd. While the court had earlier charged them with the offence under section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) read with section 420 (cheating) of IPC, substantial charge of cheating was made out against Saraf. The CBI had named them in its charge sheet on December 12, 2011, alleging they had cheated the Department of Telecommunication by using Loop Telecom as a "front" to secure 2G licences in 2008.

Celebrations in court complex as Raja, Kanimozhi acquitted

The judgement in the 2G spectrum allocation scam cases brought smiles on the faces of the acquitted accused including former telecom minister A Raja, who was present inside the Special Court here. Special CBI Judge O P Saini decided the fate of the accused by saying, "I have absolutely no hesitation in holding that prosecution has miserably failed to prove any of the charges against any of the accused". A number of supporters of DMK leaders Raja and Kanimozhi, who were anxiously waiting outside the jam-packed court room, broke into loud cheers as soon as the verdict was pronounced. Besides the accused and their advocates, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and few journalists managed to get inside the court room. The judge first pronounced the judgement in the cases lodged by the CBI and the ED against Raja and others. After these accused vacated the court room, the promoters of Essar Group and Loop Telecom along with one other accused who were facing trial in the case arising .
