Sebi settles case with Emmpac Holdings

Markets regulator Sebi has settled a case related to alleged violation of takeover regulations with Emmpac Holdings after the firm paid Rs 2 lakh towards settlement. The regulator had initiated adjudication proceedings against Emmpac Holdings Pvt Ltd (EHCL) for not complying with SAST (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeover) Regulations, according to a Sebi order dated December 18. Among others, EHCL had allegedly failed to make necessary disclosure regarding its shareholding in Emmsons International Ltd within the prescribed time frame following acquisition of the shares of the latter during the period between June, 2006 and March, 2007. While the adjudication proceedings were pending, EHCL had filed an application for settlement of the matter. The settlement terms offered by EHCL were considered by Sebi's High Powered Advisory Committee, which recommended the proceedings for settlement on payment of Rs 2 lakh by the firm. 'IndiGo scuffle came to DGCA's notice through social media'

The incident of a passenger being manhandled by IndiGo staff at the airport here came to the notice of aviation regulator DGCA through social media and almost a month after it happened, according to the government. After the incident came to light last month, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju had strongly condemned the same, while the airline had admitted that it was at fault and had apologised. Last month, a video clip of the incident had gone viral. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha told the Rajya Sabha today that in the recent past through social media, it came to the notice of the DGCA that a passenger who travelled by "IndiGo flight 6E-487 was manhandled after deplaning in the operational area at IGI Airport, New Delhi". HC seeks to know rules for appointment of volunteers at

The Delhi High Court today sought to know whether any guidelines were in place for appointment of personnel and volunteers at special homes in the national capital for visually-impaired minor inmates. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said that such guidelines were necessary and the department concerned should take note and place the same before the court in eight weeks. The direction came during a hearing of a PIL filed by a social worker, Prashant Kumar, highlighting the absence of due care and framework during appointment of personnel and volunteers at special homes for visually-impaired minor inmates in Delhi. Two Kashmiri youths attacked for not speaking in Kannada

A Kashmiri student and his brother were allegedly attacked here by a group of people for not speaking in Kannada, police said. The incident occurred a week ago but came to light only yesterday, police said today. "We arrested two persons by name Mahesh and Harish for attacking the Kashmiri boys. Sanatan Sanstha receives letter threatening to kill founder

Goa-based Sanatan Sanstha has received a letter threatening to kill its founder Jayant Athavale, prompting the right-wing organisation to lodge a police complaint today. According to Sanstha spokesperson Chetan Rajhans, the letter also mentioned that women inmates of the ashram, located at Ramnathi near Ponda town, around 40 kms from here, will be assaulted. The single-page letter, typed in English, has been sent from Bengaluru. "The letter which claims to be written by one Jamesh Annamalai was received at 10.30 AM today through post," Rajhans told PTI. The letter, addressed to Rajhans, threatens to eliminate Athavale, who lives in the ashram, as well as the women inmates. Fire in Mumbai shop: Owner gets five-day police custody

A Mumbai court today remanded the owner of a snack shop, where 12 people were charred to death in a massive fire yesterday, to five-day police custody. Ramesh Bhanushali, the owner of the shop in Sakinaka- Kurla area, was arrested late last night. He was produced before a magistrate in suburban Andheri, who remanded him to police custody till December 24, a senior official attached to Sakinaka police station said. Bhanushali was booked under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. The blaze erupted in the 'Bhanu farsan (snack) shop' in Makaria Compound on the Khairani Road around 4.25am yesterday following which the structure collapsed.

Two deputy collectors suspended for involvement in land 'scam'

Two deputy collectors facing charges of misappropriation in a land grabbing case have been suspended, a senior official said today. Aurangabad Divisional Commissioner Purushottam Bhapkar said resident deputy collector Vishwambar Gawande and deputy collector Devendra Katke were suspended after they were prima facie found to be involved in the embezzlement of a land case on a complaint by one Bhausaheb Kale. "An inquiry was initiated and both were found involved in the scam and hence the action was taken. Additional Collector P L Sormare, Additional (retd) collector Kisan Lawande, the then deputy collector Ravi Rajput have been served show cause notice as to why action should not be initiated against them," added Bhapkar. According to the officer, the illegal deal cost Rs 10 lakh to the state exchequer.

Journalist J Dey murder case: court examines expert from US

A CBI court here today heard the deposition of a scientific expert from the US via a video link in connection with the 2011 killing of journalist J Dey. "Edward Burns, an expert, deposed before the court. He had compared the actual image of the bike used in the killing with its CCTV footage, and he told the court that both carried resemblance," special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat said. The image-comparison technology was being used for the first time to corroborate evidence, he added. The prosecution today completed the examination of its witnesses. It examined a total of 154 witnesses. Dey, a veteran crime journalist, was shot dead in suburban Powai on June 11, 2011, while he was on his way home. The CBI court framed charges against gangster Chhota Rajan in the case last year. The agency claimed that Rajan had the veteran crime reporter killed because he was miffed with some articles written by Dey, and also because a planned book of Dey portrayed Rajan as a 'chindi'

HC orders inspection of 'spiritual' institute confining minors

The Delhi High Court today directed the police to immediately inspect an institute in north Delhi where girls and women were allegedly kept in illegal confinement, dubbing the situation "similar" to that witnessed in Gurmeet Ram Rahim's ashram in Haryana's Sirsa. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said that it was "extremely dangerous" that girls and women have been allegedly kept in illegal confinement in the name of preaching about God. Without making any direct references of Ram Rahim or the Dera Sacha Sauda sect led by him, the bench said similar activities were going on in Sirsa, whose chief was recently handed down a 20-year jail term for raping two women disciples. Give names of officials involved in GDA stamp scam to IO, HC

Questioning why no action was taken against senior officials in the multi-crore stamp scam in Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA), the Allahabad High Court today directed the UP chief secretary to providenames of all those involved to the investigating officerwithin three weeks. Plea filed in Madras HC for producing fisherman's body

A man has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Madras High Court, seeking a direction to authorities to produce the body of his son, who died in a mishap while fishing near Jubail coastal area in Saudi Arabia last month. When the plea from A Justin came up today, a division bench of justices Rajhiv Shakdher and N Satish Kumar issued notice to the authorities concerned, returnable on December 22. According to the petitioner, his son J Brain Ignatius, 24, was employed as a contract fishing labourer by a private company in Saudi Arabia. When his son and others were fishing on November 30 near Jubail coastal area, their boat was hit by an oil vessel. Four other fishermen were rescued, but his son could not be traced. Miscreants slit blind girl's throat

Miscreants allegedly attempted to murder a visually challenged minor girl by slitting her throat after trying to rape her in Odisha's Ganjam district early today. The victim, a 16-year old student of standard seven of a school for the blind here, was found by her mother lying in a pool of blood at the back of her house at Puhundi village, the police said. She was rushed to the Patrapur community health centre which referred her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. Half-eaten body of youth found in Rajaji Tiger Reserve

A half-eaten body of an unidentified man was found today in the Motichoor range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve (RTR), an official said. This was fifteenth such case in three years, he added. "Prima facie the victim aged around 35 years seems to have been killed by a man-eater leopard," Director, RTR, Sanatan Sonkar said. The body was in a half-eaten state, he said adding that the man was the leopard's 15th victim in three years. Three persons, including a Punjab police constable, were arrested on charges of stalking and attempting to kidnap a Mohali based woman here, police said today. A PIL was today moved in the Delhi High Court seeking closure of eateries which are running in contravention of municipal laws and without fire clearances in the posh Khan Market and Connaught Place areas of the city.
