The Supreme Court told CBI on Wednesday that it would examine whether there was evidence requiring former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar's custodial interrogation by the agency in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi made this observation after perusing the case diary placed before it by the CBI, which sought Kumar's custodial interrogation claiming that there was prima facie evidence that he had tried to destroy or tamper with evidence and "shield high and mighty" in the case. Kumar's counsel countered the CBI submissions and said the agency's move to seek custodial interrogation of the IPS officer was nothing but a "political game". Kumar was earlier heading the West Bengal Police's special investigation team (SIT) probing the chit fund scam. The apex court had in May 2014 directed the CBI to investigate the case. A woman and her eight-month-old daughter were Wednesday crushed to death by a speeding truck in Achnera town, 30 kilometres from here, police said. The deceased have been identified as Manisha and her daughter Amrata, they said, adding that they were residents of a nearby village. According to eyewitnesses, the victims were sitting by the side of the road when they were run over by the truck, police said. Locals got hold of the driver and handed him over to police, they said. The bodies have been sent for autopsy, Inspector Sher Singh said. The driver has been arrested and a case registered against the owner of the truck, he added.

A Goa court on Wednesday issued summons against Union minister and North Goa MP Shripad Naik directing him to depose as a witnesses in a cheating case registered against his former staffer last year. Panaji Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Vijayalaxmi Shivolkar directed Naik to appear in person by June 3. The JMFC also asked Naik to testify and bring material evidence, if any, on what he knows about the case. The former staffer in question, Vinod Desai, was booked last year under section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly demanding Rs six lakh from one Mervin Fernandes under the pretext of providing him a job in the Goa government. Desai had allegedly taken an advance payment of Rs two lakh from Fernandes. As Desai failed to keep his promise, Fernandes demanded refund of his money. Corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar was in regular touch with former aviation minister Praful Patel while acting as a middleman in negotiations to favour foreign private airlines, causing losses to national carrier Air India, ED has told a Delhi court. The Enforcement Directorate claimed in its charge sheet filed against Talwar, who has been arrested, that he allegedly finalised various communications addressed to Patel on behalf of Emirates and Air Arabia. "There is evidence including email conversations between Deepak and Patel," the probe agency told the court. An alleged notorious criminal was detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) and lodged in a jail here, police said on Wednesday. Bunny Gupta of R S Pura, a repeat offender, is involved in a number of FIRs across Jammu division, a police official said. "On account of his criminal activities, his preventive detention under PSA was recommended by police and approved by the district magistrate, Jammu," he said. Accordingly, the PSA warrant against the criminal was executed on Tuesday and subsequently he was lodged in a jail here, he said. The PSA is an administrative law that allows detention without charge or trialfor up to two years in some cases. Meanwhile, five persons were taken into preventive custody for their alleged involvement in unlawful activities in Rajouri district, the official said. A 23-year-old police constable was killed Wednesday when his service rifle went off accidentally in Khejadia village in Madhya Pradesh, an officer said. The incident occurred when the trigger of constable Ravi Yadav's rifle got pulled when he was handling the firearm, said Sitamau Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Om Prakash Sharma. The bullet went through the chin of the constable and got lodged in his head, killing him instantaneously, he said. The deceased was posted on night duty along with another police constable. A mother-son duo was allegedly murdered and the corpses were found dumped in a water drum inside their residence, the police said on Wednesday.The woman identified as Sabnam and her son identified as Irfan, were found dead at their residence in the Vanasthalipuram police station limits.
