A special court here sentenced a 21-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for throwing acid on a teenage schoolgirl last year. SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act Special Judge Vijay Kumar Hota on Monday held Leelaram Nishad guilty under section 326 A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of the Indian Penal Code and awarded him 10 years rigorous imprisonment. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him, Special Public Prosecutor A K Shrivastav said Tuesday. If the fine is not paid, he said, Nishad will have to undergo additional imprisonment of six months. The court also ordered the state government to provide a compensation of Rs 1.50 lakh to the victim, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste community, Shrivastav said. On July 6, 2018, when the girl, a Class 12 student, was returning from school, Nishad, threw acid on her between Jatri and Shankarpali villages in the Pusaur area of the district, Shrivastav said. The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday reserved its verdict on a petition seeking stay on election to Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency till the name of Naitik Party candidate is included in the list of contestants. The petition, filed by Naitik Party which also demanded Rs 1 lakh compensation from the Election Commission, was heard by the high court's Lucknow bench of justices PK Jaiswal and Rajnish Kumar. The petitioner alleged that nomination of its candidate was "improperly rejected by the returning officer (Lucknow district magistrate) for favouring another candidate (Union Home Minister) Rajnath Singh on caste consideration". A Bangladeshi national has been sentenced to six months in jail by a Dubai court for molesting an Indian minor girl, according to a media report on Tuesday. The Dubai Court of First Instance also ordered that the 30-year-old cleaner be deported after completing his jail term, the Khaleej Times reported. According to the public prosecution's records, the incident happened in February when the Bangladeshi man took the six-year-old girl twice into a lift of her residence and molested her. The incident was reported to police in March. The girl's father, a flight attendant, in his complaint said that in the wee hours of March 7, his daughter told him she wanted to sleep next to him as she felt scared. "She also said that she did not want the accused to come to clean our house again," he was quoted as saying in the report. Debt-ridden Reliance Communications (RCom) Tuesday withdrew its petition challenging an NCLT order that allowed insolvency resolution process against the company. RCom in May last year had filed a petition before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against the NCLT order on a plea by global telecom gear maker Ericsson. The Mumbai bench of NCLT on May 15, 2018, admitted an insolvency petition filed by Ericsson against RCom and two of its subsidiaries -- Reliance Infratel and Reliance Telecom. The tribunal had also appointed an interim resolution professional to run the company. The NCLAT on May 30, 2018, had stayed the operations of NCLT orders. Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group firm has now opted to go through the insolvency proceedings. A Chinese court sentenced a second Canadian man to death for drug trafficking on Tuesday amid diplomatic tensions between Ottawa and Beijing. Two bootleggers were arrested during a raid on an illicit liquor manufacturing unit in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Tuesday. The bootleggers, identified as Roshan Lal and Sushil Kumar, were arrested with 30 poly nips of illicit liquor from Chibey Chak Raibagh village, a police spokesman said. He said in another operation the police unearthed an illicit liquor manufacturing unit at Budhi village here. Police destroyed 120 litres of 'lahan' (locally-made liquor) which was seized from the illegal unit, he said. No one was arrested during the raid, said the spokesperson, adding that efforts were on to nab the suspects who managed to flee. Separate cases have been registered, he said.
A 35-year-old unemployed man allegedly killed his wife and minor son before committing suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his room in Rajasthan's Bundi district, police said Tuesday. The incident came to light when Mukesh Meena's brother visited his house in Sumerganj Mandi town in Indergarh city Tuesday morning, they said. He found Meena's body hanging from the fan of his room and blood-stained bodies of his wife, Komal, 30, and his son, Aakash, 10, lying on the floor, SHO, Indergarh police station, Laxmi Chand said. Initial investigations revealed that Meena first killed his wife and son and then hanged himself, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Indergarh circle, O P Chandolia said. He, however, said no suicide note was found. Chandolia said Meena was educated but unemployed and he had been preparing for government jobs. The bodies have been sent for the post-mortem and further investigation is underway, he said.
