US Army veteran held for planning bomb blasts to avenge NZ terror attack

A United States Army veteran and California resident, who allegedly planned to bomb "multiple targets" in Southern California, was arrested and his domestic terror plot was thwarted, authorities said on Monday.The suspect, identified as Mark Steven Domingo, who recently converted to Islam according to federal authorities, was seeking revenge for the March 15 shootings in two Christchurch mosques in New Zealand that claimed 50 lives, The Washington Post reported.Domingo was arrested on Friday at the Long Beach, California, a park where a rally he had targeted was set to take place. Woman among four held for burglary

Three men and a woman were arrested for allegedly robbing a house and beating a man and a woman staying there at Dwarka's Bindapur area, police said Monday. The accused have been identified as Baldev Singh (47), a resident of Vishnu Garden, Biru(39), Sonu (22), residents of Tilak Nagar and a 33-year-old woman, a resident of Uttam Nagar, they said. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse, "One complainant filed a case on March 30 that his uncle and his two sons went to Punjab and his aunty was alone at hom." On the intervening night of March 30-31, he was sleeping in his aunty's house in Sewak Park. At around 2 am, he heard some noise and when he woke up, he saw four persons entering his room, the DCP said. All the persons allegedly started beating him and his aunt and tied their hands, feet and mouth. Gurgaon man raped 8-year-old daughter repeatedly after wife died, arrested: Police

A man has been arrested in Haryana's Gurgaon for allegedly raping his eight-year-old daughter repeatedly over several months, police said Monday. The man was arrested after neighbours found out about the horror from the girl, who studies in class four, police said. The girl was not behaving normally over the past few days and when neighbours started asking her about it she told them about the sexual exploitation, ACP (crime) Shamsher Singh said. Following that they informed police, he added. "The girl used to stay with her father in Pataudi area. After the death of her mother, her father repeatedly sexually assaulted her over the last couple of months," the officer said. "The girl said that she was sexually exploited almost every night after her father got drunk. Last week, the accused raped her twice," he said. The girl has been rescued and sent to children observation centre for counselling, police said.

Woman dies after man drags her from 2nd-floor residence

A woman died after her husband dragged her from their second-floor residence to the ground floor following a heated argument, a police official said Monday. The incident happened on Saturday night in Nai Basti area of old Gurgaon. Seema Gandhi was rescued by her son and admitted to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. She died on Sunday. The accused, identified as Prem Gandhi, was arrested from the residence, Gurgaon police PRO Subhash Bokan said. The couple had been fighting and indulging in verbal arguments over domestic issues, Bokan said. The woman had returned to her residence from her parents' home about 15 days ago. On Saturday evening, her mother-in-law abused her over some issue and later her husband dragged her from the the second floor to outside the residence.

HC grants pre-arrest bail to IAS officer in civil supply scam

The Chhattisgarh High Court Monday granted anticipatory bail to IAS officer Anil Tuteja, one of the accused in the multi-crore civil supply scam unearthed in 2015 during the previous BJP government in the state. Justice Ram Prasanna Sharma granted bail to Tuteja, who has claimed no direct evidence against him, after hearing his anticipatory bail plea, his lawyer Peeyush Bhatia said. A case was registered at the office of Economic Offences Wing/Anti-Corruption Bureau of the state police at Raipur in 2015 in connection with the alleged scam, he said. During that time, the ACB and EOW had raided 28 premises of officials and employees of Chhattisgarh State Civil Supply Corporation (CSCSC) and registered a case against 18 people, including two Indian Administrative Service officers Tuteja and Alok Shukla, he said. Man held for killing ex-IAF Wing Commander's wife in Dwarka

A 56-year-old man was arrested from Jaipur on Monday for allegedly killing the wife of a retired Indian Air Force Wing Commander in Dwarka's Sector-7 area, police said. The accused has been identified as Dinesh Dixit, a resident of Jaipur in Rajasthan, they said. On Friday morning, Meenu Jain, 52, the wife of a former IAF Wing Commander, was found lying unconscious at her house in Dwarka, police said. She was taken to Ayushman Hospital in Dwarka Sector-10, where doctors declared her brought dead. The Madras High Court Monday expressed concern over rise in incidents of spurned lovers attacking women in a brutal manner and observed that refusal to marry does not give men right to stab them, as it denied bail to an accused. This trend was on the rise and it was high time that courts put down their foot and bring some sanity in society, Justice N Anand Venkatesh said. "These incidents continue to happen because man thinks that a woman is a chattel and she has to concede to whatever a man demands. Mumbai: BMC staffer on LS poll duty dies in Dharavi

A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation employee who was deputed on polling duty as a peon in Dharavi in central Mumbai died Monday afternoon, an official said. Vijay Sable complained of uneasiness and was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival by medical authorities, he added. Dharavi is part of Mumbai South Central Lok Sabha seat, which went to polls on Monday along with the metropolis' five other constituencies.

NIA arrests a person in ISIS Kasargod module case

National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday arrested a person in connection with Kasargod IS module case.The accused, identified as Riyas A alias Riyas Aboobacker, was allegedly conspiring to commit a terrorist attack in Kerala. 4 Rajasthan polling personnel die over 2 days

Four polling personnel died, three due to illness, in separate cases over two days in Rajasthan, officials said Monday. In Mavli town of Udaipur district, an election official fell sick at a polling booth and died on the way to a hospital on Monday evening, district election officer Anandhi said. Cardiac arrest is the suspected cause of the death, the official said. In Rajsamand, a member of the polling party, who was a teacher, died due to a heart attack when the group was being dispersed for duty on Sunday, district election officer Arvind Poswal said. A similar case happened in Ajmer, where a polling official died in Kekri before attending training on Sunday, district election officer Vishwamohan Sharma said. In Jodhpur, booth-level officer Shaitan Singh fell from the roof of a polling station where he had gone to sleep on Sunday night, an official said.

29-hour-long power outage in Ghaziabad's Trans Hindan area; locals stage protest

Residents of 17 colonies in the Trans Hindan area protested against the Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL) here on Monday for a near 29-hour-long power outage in their neigbourhood. The protestors alleged negligence on part of the Water Works Department of Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam. The power outage lasted from 9.00 pm on Saturday to 2.00 am on Monday. The PVVNL will lodge a FIR against the water works department for allegedly damaging underground cable while laying water pipes, officials said. Chief Engineer Rakesh Kumar Rana said the case will be lodged under Prevention Of Damage To Public Property Act. Meanwhile, a contractual lineman, Hariom, was charred to death on Saturday evening when he was working on a 33-KVA power line. Harriom died after electricity supply suddenly resumed, officials said. 3 held for beating man to death in Delhi's Swaroop Nagar

Three men were arrested on Monday for allegedly beating to death a 37-year-old man as he refused to return the mobile phone of one of the accused in Outer North's Swaroop Nagar area, police said. "The body Jitender Kumar, a resident of Meerut, was recovered from Kadipur cremation ground in the morning," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Gaurav Sharma said. The victim had come to Swaroop Nagar to meet his brother, he said. During investigation, police got a tip-off and apprehended one of the accused, Sushil (23), a native of Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit district. Man arrested over knives at Japan prince's school desk: media

Japanese police on Monday arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with two paring knives found at the school desk of Prince Hisahito, grandson of Emperor Akihito, local media reported. The incident comes as authorities were beefing up security ahead of the popular emperor's abdication on Tuesday after a 30-year reign. The man, identified as Kaoru Hasegawa, was arrested on suspicion of illegally entering the premises of the junior high school the 12-year-old prince attends on Friday, public broadcaster NHK and other news reports said. Court sends journalist to 3-day police custody over alleged defamatory post against Tripura CM

A local court on Monday remanded a journalist, arrested on defamation and other charges for sharing and commenting on a Facebook post related to Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb and his wife, to three days police custody. West Tripura Chief Judicial Magistrate Sarmistha Mukherjee remanded freelance journalist Saikat Talapatra to police custody for three days. The investigating official had sought his custody for five days. A group of people threw eggs and shoes at Talapatra while he was being produced in the court. Allegations against CJI: Ex-employee appears before in-house inquiry panel for second time

A former apex court employee, who levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, appeared before the in-house inquiry panel and recorded her statement on Monday. She appeared before the three-member panel headed by Justice S A Bobde for the second time. The first proceeding by the panel was held on April 26. The panel also including two women judges -- Justices Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee -- is conducting in-camera proceedings. During the hearing, only the woman was present, an apex court source said. The complaint is not permitted to accompany her lawyer. It is learnt that the next hearing will take place on Tuesday. Woman dies in polling booth

A 56-year-old woman died inside a polling booth in Nadia district on Monday apparently due to the prevailing heat wave like condition, officials said. After standing in a queue for some time, Seikh Salema went inside the booth at a school in Kaliganj area in Krishnagar Lok Sabha seat around 9 am and fell unconscious shortly after that, district officials said. Efforts to revive her by a woman accompanying her and poll workers inside the booth failed and she died. District Magistrate Sumit Gupta confirmed the death of the woman.

HC grants anticipatory bail to former minister Senthil Balaji

The Madras High Court Monday granted conditional anticipatory bail to DMK leader V Senthil Balaji and Congress candidate for Karur Lok Sabha seat S Jyothimani following a criminal complaint filed against them by a returning officer. Granting the relief to the two and also to Karur-based advocate N Senthil Kumar, Justice R Subramanian directed them to execute a bond of Rs 50,000 each and two sureties to the satisfaction of the jurisdictional judicial magistrate. The DMK leader, Congress candidate and the advocate were also directed to appear before police inspector of Thanthonimalai station in Karur district three days a week till June 1. Court seeks Delhi Police reply on Tharoor's plea to travel to US

A Delhi court has sought reply of Delhi Police on an application of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor seeking the court's permission to travel to the US from May 5-20.Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj will hear the matter on Tuesday.Tharoor is an accused in his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death case.Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a suite of a Delhi hotel on the night of January 17, 2014. The couple was staying in the hotel as their house was undergoing renovation.Tharoor has been charged under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He, however, has dismissed the charges as "preposterous".
