The Delhi High Court Monday dismissed a Manipur student activist's plea challenging his arrest and transit remand here in a sedition case lodged against him for making remarks over the Citizenship Bill on social media. Justice Sunil Gaur dismissed activist Veewon Thokchom's plea who was arrested by Manipur police in Delhi on February 15. The court had earlier reserved order on the plea. Thokchom had filed the petition through his brother seeking quashing of the transit remand claiming it to be defective. His counsel had argued that the transit remand order suffered from non-application of mind. Counsel for Manipur police had contended that misleading facts were being placed before the court by the activist's lawyer and he would be taken to Manipur to be produced before the concerned court tomorrow. West Bengal Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De, DGP Virendera Kumar and Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar Monday filed separate affidavits in the Supreme Court on the contempt petition moved by the CBI in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. They responded to the notices issued on February 5 by the apex court which had asked them to clarify their stand on the allegation that evidence was tampered with and the state police was not cooperating with the Central Bureau of Investigation. A Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had said that after perusing the affidavits, a decision will be taken whether they would required to make personal appearance before it on February 20. It said the Secretary General of the apex court will inform the trio on Feb 19 whether they are required to be present on February 20.
A woman was allegedly raped at her birthday party organised at a friend's house in Waliv in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said Monday. The host's boyfriend was also present at the party, which was held on February 13, and the two spiked the victim's drink, a Waliv police station official said. "The woman host pinned the victim down when she was drowsy and her boyfriend raped her. The duo also threatened the victim to not reveal the incident to anybody," he said. The 27-year-old victim, a resident of Kandivali in the northern part of Mumbai, later filed a complaint with Waliv police on Sunday. Following the complaint, the woman host and her boyfriend, both in their mid-twenties, were booked for rape and criminal intimidation, said Palghar police's public relations officer Hemant Katkar.
The prime accused in the Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas murder case was arrested from West Midnapore district Monday, police said. Abhijit Pundari was picked up from Radhamohanpur railway station, Superintendent of Police of Nadia district Rupesh Kumar said. Biswas, the MLA of Krishnaganj, was shot dead in the evening of February 9 inside a Saraswati puja marquee at Phoolbari village in Nadia district, about 15 kilometres from the Bangladesh border. With the arrest of Pundari, a total of five persons have been into custody in the case. Police arrested Sujit Mondal and Kartik Mondal on the night of the murder. Kalipada Mondal and Nirmal Ghosh were picked up from Hanskhali and Chakdaha areas of Nadia, respectively, on February 14. A police sub-inspector died from injuries after an unidentified vehicle allegedly rammed into his car in Greater Noida, officials said Monday. The incident took place late on Sunday night in which the 50-year-old SI, Hariraj Singh, suffered grievous injuries and died, police said. Singh, in-charge of the Atta Police Post under Sector 20 police station in Noida, was on his way from Gautam Buddh Nagar to Ghaziabad, they said. "An unidentified vehicle allegedly rammed into Singh's personal vehicle on the Chaar Moorti to Tigri road," a police spokesperson said. The Supreme Court on Monday decided to hear an appeal filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against the Madras High Court ruling allowing a petition by Amma Makkal Munetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader T T V Dhinakaran seeking copies of official documents relating to the 1996 FERA case against him.The ED had submitted that the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA), 1973, prohibits the disclosure of any document, information, or intelligence of the department, which is highly confidential.The case against Dhinakaran pertains to the allegation that he acquired USD 10 million in foreign exchange without obtaining permission from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and deposited the money in the current account of Dipper Investments Ltd, a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, which has an account with Barclays Bank in the UK.
A 55-year-old woman pilgrim died of suspected cardiac arrest after paying obeisance at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Monday. Pregna Behen, a resident of Khedbrahma-Kantha in Gujarat, collapsed soon after reaching her hotel room in the base camp Katra from the cave shrine Sunday, a police official said. He said she was rushed to a nearby community health centre by her relatives but died while undergoing treatment. The body of the deceased was later handed over to her legal heirs for last rites after completion of legal formalities, the official said.
The Assam government is aware that a person from Golaghat district in the state was taken into custody by Pakistan authorities along with some other Indians while they were working on a ship at the Indo-Pakistan border, state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the Assembly on Monday. "On being contacted the father of the victim Pradip Saikia disclosed that Simanta Saikia aged about 33 years of village Nabagram, District Golaghat, Assam, was arrested on 28/10/2018 by Pakistani authorities," said Patowary in reply to a starred question of BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia in the House. On Saikia's whereabouts, he said, "As per information available Simanta Saikia has been lodged in Landhi jail of Pakistan." Landhi jail is in Pakistan's Karachi. The Assam police has taken up the matter with the central agencies for consular access and release of the prisoner, Patowary added.
A man's nose was chopped off allegedly by the kin of his lover in Gujarat's Amreli district, leading to the arrest of five persons, police said Monday. Prakash Koli (23) had gone on Saturday night to meet the woman he was in a relationship with, both residents of Jivapur village, around 250 kilometres from here, when the incident happened, Babra police inspector J D Ahir said. "When he reached there at night, family members of the woman pinned him down and her uncle chopped off his nose. Koli was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is undergoing treatment," Ahir informed. He said the woman's parents, her brother and uncle were arrested on Monday under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) and 146 (rioting) of the Indian Penal Code. The official identified them as Jagdish Pipaliya, Sardaben Pipaliya, Suresh Pipaliya, Atul Pipaliya and Kalu Pipaliya.
The Delhi High Court on Monday asked Investigating officer probing the case of Veewon Thokchom, a student activist from Manipur who was arrested and charged with sedition for a Facebook post critical of the citizenship amendment bill, to present the file of the case by later today.The direction from judicature came after Thokchom challenged his arrest.Veewon, who was the Former president of Manipur Students Association Delhi, was arrested by the police on Saturday and was later produced in the special cell in Saket Court. Merely passing an order that laws should be complied with is not enough for authorities as they also need to take action violators, the National Green Tribunal has said in a case against the use of loudspeaker to curb noise pollution. The NGT's observation came while dealing with a plea alleging that illegal use of loudspeakers at mosques was adversely affecting the health of the residents living in their vicinity in East Delhi. "Mere passing an order that law should be complied is not the only job of the executing authority. When violation of law is established, need is to take remedial action by way of prosecution and recovery of damages, which has not been done," the NGT said. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel also directed the DCPs of the East and West district to submit action plan to check noise pollution in their area.
