Lawyers who defended Kasab in HC yet to get their fees

Two lawyers who defended Ajmal Kasab in the 2008 Mumbai attack case on the directions of the Bombay High Court are yet to get their legal fees from the Maharashtra government. While the state government says they have not submitted any bills, the lawyers say that state prosecutors are not supposed to. The two lawyers -- Amin Solkar and Farhana Shah -- were tasked with defending Kasab, hanged to death on November 21, 2012 for killing over 166 people in Mumbai, by the Maharashtra State Legal Services Department after they were nominated by then acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court J N Patel. A notification about their appointment was issued on June 8, 2010 after Kasab had expressed his desire to contest the verdict of the trial court sentencing him to death in the Bombay High Court. According to the notification, Solkar was to receive remuneration equivalent to what is sanctioned for a public prosecutor, who conducts a death confirmation appeal, and Shah was to receive fees on par .

Indian-origin accountant among 5 fraudsters jailed for visa scam in UK

A gang of five fraudsters, including an Indian-origin accountant, who ran a fake Bangladeshi visa scam and falsely claimed nearly 13 million pounds in tax repayments have been sentenced to a total of 31 years in jail by a UK court. Jalpa Trivedi, 41, was found guilty for facilitating the accounting side of the fraud and was jailed for three years. London-based Bangladeshi origin law student Abul Kalam Muhammad Rezaul Karim was the ringleader in the organised crime group. The 42-year-old man set up 79 bogus companies and created fake documentation used by Bangladeshi nationals in fraudulent visa applications, Southwark Crown Court in London was told during a trial that ended last week. The fraudsters also used the companies to fraudulently reclaim tax repayments from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over a six-year period, with 172,000 pounds being paid out and potentially could have amounted to as much as 13-million pounds if the fraud had not been undetected. We shot the wrong man: Hoover Police

Hoover Police have admitted having mistakenly killed the wrong person in Alabama mall shooting on Thanksgiving evening.People were hiding in stores and food court area while shooting was underway.Police informed the public that they had secured the entire mall and the gunman had been shot dead. Two drug smugglers arrested with 64 kg contraband

Two drug smugglers were arrested with 64 kg of contraband worth Rs 3 lakhs on Karnal-Meerut highway in Shamli district, police said Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a dhaba on the highway and arrested the two accused involved in selling the contraband on Saturday, Shamli Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Pandey said. Married woman gang raped at her home

A 26-year-old married woman was allegedly raped by three people at her home in the absence of her husband in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said Sunday. The accused had threatened the woman of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone, Station House Officer Bhagat Singh said. On Saturday, the three men entered the woman's home forcefully and raped her when her husband was not around, he said. The accused were absconding, the SHO said, adding a case was registered against them.

Two detained at Chennai airport for trying to smuggle gold

An employee of a ground handling services firm at the airport here and a passenger have been detained for allegedly trying to smuggle 1.2 kg of gold hidden in a mobile power bank, officials said Sunday. A CISF personnel noticed the staff receiving "something" from the passenger at the international arrival. The yellow metal concealed in a power bank was seized during a check, the officials said. The incident happened on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, they said. The seized gold is worth Rs 37 lakh. The two persons have been handed over to the customs department for further probe, they said.

Lankesh killing: SIT names Hindutva outfit in additional chargesheet, says it was a 5-year plot

The special investigation team (SIT) probing the killing of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh has named an organised criminal syndicate inspired by the Sanatan Sanstha in its additional chargesheet filed before a court here. In the 9,235-page chargesheet submitted before the Principal Civil and Sessions Court here Friday evening, it was also stated that the killing of Lankesh was plotted for almost five years. Woman abducted, assaulted in southeast Delhi

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted in a car by an unidentified man in southeast Delhi and later thrown off the vehicle, police said Saturday. The woman alleged that after being abducted from Millennium Depot Sarai Kale Khan, she was thrown out of the car near UP gate, they added. Police said they were informed about the incident by the hospital, where the woman was undergoing treatment. In her statement to the police, the woman said around 4 pm on Friday, she had gone to a public toilet at I P park to give food to her sister, who was working there as an attendant in place of her mother. 60 Sabarimala pilgrims detained for violating prohibitory orders

Around 60 pilgrims, who breached the security zone near Sabarimala's 'vavarunada' area and started chanting prayers despite prohibitory orders, have been detained by the police. Due to previous incidents of violence at the hill-top shrine, the police had imposed strict restrictions on the devotees at Sannidhanam. The protesters were staying back near 'vavarunada' and chanting prayers, even as there was an imposition of Section 144 that prohibits assembly of more than four people at a spot, police said. The detained protesters are being taken to the Pamba police station, which is around 3.5-km downhill. Hundreds of protesters have been arrested in this first week of the annual two-month-long 'Mandala-Makaravilakku' season of Sabarimala, which commenced on November 17. Salon owner attacks woman staff; arrested

A 60-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attacking a woman staff at his salon in south Delhi's Greater Kailash, following a quarrel between the two on Saturday, police said. The 28-year-old woman was working at the salon of the accused. Following a fight between the two, the accused allegedly attacked the victim with a knife-like sharp item, a senior police officer said. The victim, who sustained an injury on her hand, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Later, the woman was referred to AIIMS Trauma Centre, said Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (south). The woman is stable now, police said, adding a case had been registered. The accused has also been arrested in connection with the incident, the DCP said. Woman shot at by husband in Delhi

A 28-year-old woman was injured after being shot at allegedly by her husband outside a hospital in Lutyens' Delhi on Saturday, police said. Woman abducted days before her marriage

A 20-year-old girl has been abducted days before her marriage here, police said. According to a complaint filed by her parents, the girl had gone to the market in Krishna Vihar Kuti colony near Bhopura on Tuesday morning and has not returned home since, a police officer said. Her mother had received a phone call from her daughter's mobile phone number and listened to her screams. When the woman tried calling her again, it was found switched-off. Her father has accused a youth of kidnapping her daughter, whose marriage was fixed for December 12, the officer said. A case of kidnapping has been lodged under Section 366 of the Indian Penal Code. Pregnant woman loses baby after being kicked by husband

Police in Thane district of Maharashtra have registered a case against a man after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife which resulted in miscarriage. A case under IPC sections 315 (act done with intent to prevent child being born alive) and 498-A (husband or in-laws treating a woman with cruelty) was registered against Ganesh Save, the accused, and his parents, police said Saturday. Nobody has been arrested in the case yet, police said. The 31-year-old victim said in the complaint that after her marriage in November last year, she was facing harassment from the in-laws for dowry. Three days ago, the woman alleged, Ganesh kicked her in the stomach despite knowing that she was pregnant. She was taken to a hospital Friday after experiencing acute stomach pain. The doctors found that she had suffered a miscarriage, she said. Kasarvadavli police in the city are conducting further probe.

Three held for making extortion call

Three people were arrested for making an extortion call of Rs 3 lakh to a nursing home owner, police said Saturday. Superintendent of Police (rural) Arvind Maurya said that Loni Kotwali police had received a complaint in this regard from a private nursing home owner doctor Anil Kumar Jha on November 22. The caller posed himself as dreaded criminal Anil Dujana, they said. Acting upon the doctor's complaint, the police conducted raid at a house in village Sikrani and arrested Kumar last night. Upon getting tip from him, police again raided a flat in Indraprasth Colony around 10.40 pm and nabbed the master mind of the crime Mahesh Panchal. Police recovered the mobile phone and the sim card which was used in the crime. During interrogation, Panchal told the police that he was employee in Jha's nursing home but later started his own clinic in village Behta Hazipur of Loni. 3 arrested for raping woman inside beauty parlour

Three persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in repeatedly raping a woman inside a parlour in the citys Tiljala area, police said Saturday. Based on the complaint lodged by the victim, police on Friday arrested the three, a Kolkata Police officer said. A medical test was conducted on the victim which confirmed rape, he added. According to the police complaint, the woman was called by one of the accused at the beauty parlour and he raped her. The incident was filmed by two persons present there. Police recover 200 kg cannabis in Siliguri

Police recover 200 kg cannabis or ganja from a vehicle here on Saturday. 5 suspected members of Bangladeshi gang of robbers held in Delhi after shootout

Five suspected members of a Bangladeshi gang of robbers were arrested after a shootout with crime branch officials in southeast Delhi's Taimoor Nagar, police said Saturday. The accused have been identified as Kabir, Farooq, Zakir, Indadul and Aslam. With their arrest, four cases of robbery, attempt to murder and burglary in various states have been worked out, they said. According to Rajiv Ranjan, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), the Bangladeshi gang members were in the area to spot a house where they could commit robbery.
