A 61-year-old Indian, who was allegedly shot dead in the US by a teenager, was planning to visit Medak district in Telangana for the birthday celebrations of his 95-year-old mother on November 28, but she is yet to be informed of the death, his relatives said Sunday. Sunil Edla was shot to death last Thursday outside his apartment in New Jersey by a 16-year-old boy, local police said adding they found Edla's body with gunshot wounds lying on the pavement. Edla's nephew G Suvan told PTI over phone from Medak that the incident was 'shocking' and the victim's family members, including his mother have not been informed of his death. "His (Edla's) mother stays with us and she has not been informed about his death. Sunil had last left for the US in December 2016," Suvan said. The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested a former director and a deputy director of the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) for their alleged involvement in a scholarship scam worth over Rs 50 lakh, police said Sunday. The CCRT, an autonomous organisation under the Union Ministry of Culture, provides scholarships to young children in the age group of 10 to 14 years in various artistic fields at the national-level. G C Joshi (60) was the director of the CCRT from 2011 to July 2018 while deputy director (finance) Anil Kohli (60) retired from his post in April 2018, police said. With their arrest, police claimed to have arrested 13 accused including an ex-employee of the department in connection with the scam that ran for more than two years in connivance with CCRT officers. Agitated over the death of their six-year-old son, bereaved parents and their supporters Sunday allegedly vandalized a private hospital and manhandled one of its doctors, the police said. Police had to intervene and whisk away the doctor to the police station for his safety, said SHO Jatinderjit Singh of the Phagwara city police station. The doctor was manhandled, he said. :Five gold bars worth Rs 15 lakh were seized from a NRI woman passenger at the international airport here, CISF officials said Sunday. The woman was about to board a Mumbai-bound flight when her bag aroused the suspicion of a CISF woman constable who sent it for an intensive check, the officials said. The check yielded the five gold bars, each weighing 100 gm, and the passenger had no supporting documents, they said. On enquiry, it was revealed that the NRI lives in the US with her parents and wanted to give the gold as a gift to her father-in-law who also resides there, the CISF officials said adding that she had come to India on November 15.

The said article deals with the appointments of officers and servants of the Supreme Court.A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Ranjan Gogoi observed that the petition lacked merit and hence dismissed the same."The petition is devoid of merits and substance. Unidentified men who claimed to be cow protectors intercepted a truck carrying buffalo calves and stabbed one person in Ramol area here late Saturday night, police said. Zahir Qureshi, the victim, was admitted in the civil hospital here. The truck, driven by Mustafa Sipai, was transporting 30 buffalo calves to Bharuch from Deesa when four-five persons wielding sticks tried to stop it, saying they were 'gau rakshaks', Qureshi, who was travelling as driver's assistant, said in his police complaint. "When the driver pulled over after seeing a police vehicle in the distance, two persons came on a motorcycle and stabbed Qureshi while Sipai managed to escape," an official of Ramol police station said. A criminal wanted in three separate cases of house trespassing and theft was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Sunday, police said. Javed Ahmad was arrested by a special police team from Gandoh area of the district, they said, adding he had been evading arrest for the last eight years. Ahmad was wanted in three separate cases registered against him in police station Bani in Kathua district. He was charged with house trespassing and theft in all the three cases registered against him in 2010 and 2013 and declared absconder by a local court in Bani, the police said.
A two-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a man, who then left her near the railway tracks of Old Delhi Railway Station, police said on Sunday. The accused, a 24-year-old drug addict, was arrested Sunday morning, they said. The girl was allegedly kidnapped by the accused on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday while she was sleeping with her mother on a footpath in a north Delhi area, a senior police officer. Around 2.30 am on Saturday, the woman found her daughter missing and started looking for her. As the search did not bear fruit, the woman approached police around 10 am on Saturday following which a kidnapping case was registered, he said. Around afternoon, police learnt a baby girl had been admitted to a hospital in central Delhi and subsequently, she was identified as the one who was kidnapped, the official said. Romanian prosecutors are investigating whether a painting by Pablo Picasso that was snatched from a museum in the Netherlands six years ago has turned up in Romania. Four Romanians were convicted of stealing Picasso's "Tete d'Arlequin" and six other valuable paintings from the Kunsthal gallery in Rotterdam. One of them, Olga Dogaru, told investigators she burned the paintings in her stove to protect her son, the alleged leader of the 2012 heist. She later retracted the statement. Two suspected drug peddlers were arrested here with 70 kg of narcotics worth Rs 3 lakh, police said Sunday. The incident took place in Mujheda village which comes under the jurisdiction of Miranpur police station. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by SHO K P Singh intercepted a car and seized 70 kg of narcotics, SSP Sudhir Kumar. Devender Kumar and Bhagat Singh were arrested, he said, adding that one country-made pistol was also recovered. A case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC and the NDPS Act, he said.
The police seized a total of 699 kg ganja from two places in Alipurduar district on Sunday and arrested four persons for smuggling the contraband, a police officer said. The first lot of ganja, packed in 55 packets and weighing around 681 kg, was seized from a container truck at Pakriguri near the Assam-West Bengal border in the early hours on Sunday, the officer said. The driver of the container truck has been arrested, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Alipurduar district, Sunil Yadav, said. The container truck was travelling to Patna in Bihar from Agartala in Tripura via West Bengal, he said. The SP also said that another police team seized 18 kg ganja and arrested three youths for smuggling the contraband. They were arrested from Monojit Nag bus stand on Sunday, he added.
The Bihar Police Sunday concluded its two-day operation to attach properties of former state minister Manju Verma, who's evading arrest in an Arms Act case filed by the CBI while probing the Muzaffarpur shelter home scandal. The exercise to attach Verma's property in Arjuntola village on Sunday was led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Suryadeo Kumar. Police attached 16 articles on Sunday, while 109 articles were seized on Saturday, the SDPO said. A 32-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly supplying drugs from southeast Delhi's Taimoor Nagar area, police said Sunday. The accused was identified as Hasina Begum, a resident of Taimoor Nagar, they said. Police received information regarding supply of heroin in Taimur Nagar, Khirjrabad village and Delhi/NCR, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said. On Friday, police laid a trap near a drain in Taimoor Nagar and at around 4.45 pm, a woman was apprehended with 265 grams of heroin, he said. A Sessions Court in Pune on Sunday sent activist Varavara Rao to police custody till November 26 in connection with the Elgaar Parishad case.
