10 arrested in Delhi for running baby-selling racket

Ten people were arrested for allegedly running a baby-selling racket here and five babies were rescued, police said on Sunday. A 24-page charge-sheet was filed in a city court against the 10 people on November 14, they said. Acting on a tip-off, two police personnel met one of the accused posing as a childless couple on August 14. "A woman sub-inspector Preeti and head constable Rajesh posed as husband and wife and met one of the accused Mohammad Jahangir," the charge-sheet said. The couple chose a baby and Jahangir demanded Rs 4.30 lakh but after some negotiations, the final amount was decided at Rs 3.30 lakh. "He asked the couple to get the money in an hour and told the two that his accomplices Jyoti and Rahul will bring the child near a bank in Naraina Vihar," the charge-sheet said. 34 judges appointed to six HCs: Law Ministry

A total of 34 judges have been appointed to six high courts in the country, with Allahabad getting 28, according to the Law Ministry. Despite fresh appointments made Saturday, the 24 high courts of the country face a combined shortage of over 430 judges. The total approved strength is 1,079. While 28 judges were appointed to the Allahabad High Court, the Gauhati High Court got two new faces. Delhi, Meghalaya, Orissa and Madras High Court got one judge each, separate notifications issued by the ministry said. Out of the 34 judges appointed, 17 were lawyers and the rest were judicial officers. The collegium of the Allahabad High Court had recommended 33 names for judgeship. But the Supreme Court collegium found 17 names fit for the job. Out of these 17, the government notified the appointment of 15 and returned two to collegium for reconsideration.

Drug peddler arrested from Delhi's Taimoor Nagar

A notorious drug peddler was arrested by the team of South East District Narcotics Squad from Taimoor Nagar on Saturday. The 32-year-old was identified as Haseena Begum.She was in possession of 265 grams of heroin and an FIR was filed against her. Khaleda Zia challenges 7-year sentence in graft case

Bangladesh's former prime minister Khaleda Zia on Sunday challenged the seven-year sentence handed out to her in a corruption case for embezzling millions from a charitable trust in her late husband's name, claiming that she has been convicted "illegally and unjustly". The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief challenged the trial court's decision four days after receiving the full text of the verdict announced on October 29. The 638-page decision and the 700-page appeal petition also include a petition for bail, said her lawyer Kayser Kamal after submitting the petition to the High Court on Sunday, the bdnews reported. Four killed in accident in UP

Four persons were killed when they were run over by a speeding truck after falling from their motorcycles near the Khamria tri-section, police said Sunday. The incident took place Saturday when four persons -- Prempal (30), his cousins Rooplal (34), Ram Niwas (30) and Sanjeev (28) -- were returning from Simariya village, they said. As they came near the Khamaria tri-section, both the motorcycles collided, and the riders fell on the ground, police said. Before they could stand, they were run over by a speeding truck. Rooplal, Ram Niwas and Sanjeev died on the spot, while Prempal succumbed at a hospital, they said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, police said, adding that a search has been launched to trace the truck.

Illegal shops in Shahdara: NGT imposes Rs 1L fine on DPCC for submitting report based on 'hearsay'

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) for submitting a report based on "hearsay" without verification on burning of tyres and illegal denting and painting shops in northeast Delhi. A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said the report furnished by the DPCC in compliance of its order was based on the stand of the Resident Welfare Association and not actual verification. The tribunal directed the DPCC to conduct a fresh inspection at Gokulpur village in Shahdara to ascertain the facts, particularly with regard to alleged illegal denting and painting shops. It said the inspection should be conducted under the supervision of a representative of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The NGT directed the DPCC to shut down the denting and painting work, "if found necessary and appropriate, as per law". Man kills three of his family in Kendrapara district

A 36-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing three of his family members and injuring his mother at a village in Odisha's Kendrapara district. Bikram Das, who allegedly committed the crime in an inebriated state on Saturday midnight and had fled from the crime spot, was arrested from Marshaghai area, Kendrapara Superintendent of Police, Niti Sekhar, said. The incident had taken place at Madhusudanpur village under the jurisdiction of Patkura Police Station. Two workers injured in slab collapse

Two persons were injured Sunday when the slab of an under-construction structure collapsed on them in suburban Vikhroli, the police said. The incident occurred around 11 AM at the construction site located opposite Utkarsh Bal Mandir School in Vikhroli (East). The workers, identified as Amirul Hassan (23) and Ashok Ghode (60), sustained head injuries in the incident, a police official said. They were rushed to hospital, he said, adding that there condition is stable.

2-yr-old girl kidnapped, raped in Delhi; 1 arrested

A two-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a man, who then left her near the tracks of Old Delhi Railway Station, police said on Sunday. The accused, a 24-year-old drug addict, identified as Anil, was arrested on Sunday morning, they said. The girl was allegedly kidnapped by the accused on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday while she was sleeping with her mother on a footpath in north Delhi's Kotwali area, a senior police officer. Around 2.30 am on Saturday the woman found her daughter missing and started looking for her. As the search did not bear fruit, the woman approached police around 10 am on Saturday following which a kidnapping case was registered, he said. Around afternoon, the police learnt a baby girl had been admitted to a hospital in central Delhi and subsequently, she was identified as the one who was kidnapped from Kotwali, the official said. It was revealed that she had been sexually assaulted and the accused dumped her near the railway tracks .

SC dismisses plea alleging custodial torture of key Kathua rape-murder case witness

The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea claiming that a key witness in the sensational Kathua gang rape-and-murder case was allegedly tortured in custody by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in connection with a separate rape case. A bench comprising justices A M Khanwilkar and Deepak Gupta rejected the petition filed by a close relative of Talib Hussain, a key witness in the Kathua case, on the ground that the petitioner failed to appear before it despite the court's order. In January, an eight-year-old girl from a minority nomadic community was allegedly abducted and gang raped in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district. Petitioner M A Khan had approached the top court alleging that his relative Hussain was tortured in custody by the state police after being arrested in connection with a separate rape case. Advocate Shoeb Alam, representing the Jammu and Kashmir Police, had last month denied in the top court the allegations levelled in the petition and had said since Hussain has been granted .

HC restrains magazine from using 'Aaj Tak' trademark

The Delhi High Court has restrained a person, who runs a fortnightly magazine 'Aaj Tak Aamne Saamne', from using any name that is "deceptively or phonetically" similar to trademarks of a major media house. The court's order came after Living Media India Ltd, a media conglomerate that owns and operates news channels such as Aaj Tak, filed a suit for injunction against the person and one other. The Hindi news channel, Aaj Tak, hosts a programme called 'Aaj Tak Aamne Saamne'. The high court said there is a clear violation of the rights of Living Media India Ltd, which had filed a suit seeking injunction restraining a woman and one other from infringing and passing off trademarks 'Aaj Tak' or any other trademark "deceptively or phonetically" similar. Prayagraj: Nigerian national arrested in online fraud case

Two people, including a Nigerian national, were arrested by police here on charges of online fraud.The accused used to befriend people and dupe them of their money via Facebook, said Naveen Tiwari, Senior Superintendent of Police."We have received a diary from them in which it is written that they have taken Rs 15 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh from different people," Tiwari added.Besides that, the police have also recovered 10 mobile phones, foreign currency, and debit cards from the two people arrested.

Telangana man shot dead by juvenile in US

A 61-year-old man from Telangana, Sunil Edla, hailing from the state's Medak district, was shot dead by a 16-year-old in New Jersey's Mays Landing area in a carjacking incident.The teen has been nabbed and charged with murder by the US Police.Edla's vehicle, which was missing from the spot, was subsequently found by the police later and the juvenile was tracked with the assistance of the Atlantic City surveillance center.According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner, Edla was killed by the boy outside his residence at Nashville Avenue in New Jersey at around 8 pm on November 15.An autopsy was conducted on 16 November.Last year, an engineer from Hyderabad, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, was shot down in a racially motivated hate crime at a sports bar in the city of Kansas, US. Harassed by loan sharks, woman ends life in UP

A 45-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train after she and her sons were harassed by loan sharks, following which a man was arrested, police said on Sunday. According to a police official, Anil Tiwari and Ram Kishan had barged into the woman's house and beat her up and her sons for failing to return a loan ad had also threatened them with dire consequences. Body of youth found hanging from ceiling

The body of a 25-year-old youth was found hanging from the ceiling of his house at Dyanagar locality in Shamli, with the deceased's family alleging that he was hanged after being killed by his wife and her paramour, police said on Sunday. 61-yr-old Indian shot dead by teenager in US

A 61-year old Indian-origin man in New Jersey was shot to death by a 16-year old boy, who is facing charges in connection to the murder, prosecutors said. Sunil Edla was shot to death Thursday evening outside his apartment in Ventnor city , Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said in a statement. Ventnor City Police Department was informed on the night of November 15 about the shooting. Police located Edla on the sidewalk, with gunshot wounds. Edla had succumbed to his injuries by the time the police arrived. Edla's vehicle, a 2002 Subaru Forester, was missing from the scene. The vehicle was subsequently found by Atlantic City Police Officers in a different area. Delhi: 73-year-old woman found dead with throat slit
