Traffic cop fined for wrong parking

In an unusual turn of events, a top traffic police official here got a taste of his own medicine when he was fined by his team for flouting traffic rules.Anil Kumar, the Additional Commissioner of Traffic Police, was fined for allegedly parking his car in the no-parking zone near the Mahankali Traffic police station."I was on a visit to Makankali Traffic Police Station in the afternoon of November 15 and it was not in my notice that my driver has parked my vehicle in the no-parking zone, as soon as it came to my notice after a person tweeted the picture of my vehicle parked at No Parking," Kumar told ANI.The incident actually came to light after some people tweeted the photograph of the vehicle, asking the traffic officials if they would fine their top boss for violating rules."Immediately I informed my officials to issue a fine on my vehicle and I asked my driver to pay for it. A fine of Rs 235 was imposed for wrong parking and was immediately paid," claimed Kumar.

Justice A P Sahi sworn in as Chief Justice of Patna HC

Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi was Saturday sworn in as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court by Governor Lalji Tandon at the Raj Bhawan. Justice Sahi was a judge of the Allahabad High Court before his present appointment. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi and other state ministers, judges of the Patna high court and other officials were present at the swearing-in ceremony. Justice Sahi enrolled as an advocate of the Allahabad High Court on September 6, 1985. Justice Sahi, who graduated in law in 1985, practised civil and constitutional matters in Allahabad high court. He became an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on September 24, 2004 and was confirmed as permanent judge August 18, 2005. Justice Sahi has succeeded Justice M R Shah who has recently been appointed as the Supreme Court judge.

Monkey shot dead, buried in farm; FIR registered

An FIR was registered against a person for allegedly shooting a monkey to death and burying it in a farm in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, police said Saturday. The accused, Ram Narayan Ram, had shot the monkey dead and buried the animal in a farm outside Husenpur village in Sikandarpur area, the police said. Acting on the complaint by the villagers on Tuesday, the forest department officials dug out the body and sent it for post-mortem, said Sikandarpur police station in-charge Anil Tiwari. The officer said three injury marks were found on the body of the monkey. A case has been registered against the accused under the Wildlife Protection Act on the complaint by a forest department official, the officer added.

20 members of liquor gang held for police officer's murder

At least 20 members of a gang involved in the supply of illicit liquor, including its kingpin, were arrested in connection with a police officer's murder in neighbouring Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, police said Saturday. Police sub inspector Chhatrapati Chide (45), attached to Nagbhid police station in Chandrapur, was crushed to death allegedly by liquor smugglers on November 6, an official said. Chide and four other police personnel were conducting a routine check of vehicles allegedly involved in illegal transportation of liquor on the Gosikhurd canal road when the incident happened, he added. "The incident had occurred when PSI Chide tried to catch the vehicle carrying illegal liquor. A day after the incident, Shahjad Shaikh, the alleged kingpin of the gang was arrested," the official said. 4 members of family found dead in Haryana

Four members of a family, including two women, were found dead under mysterious circumstances at their house in Khatoli village in Panchkula district of Haryana, police said Saturday. The bodies of the four were found lying in a pool of blood in a room of their house Saturday, they said. They were living at their house together, police said. Police suspect property dispute behind the killing. Forensic exerts and dog squad were pressed into service, police said, adding that a case has been registered.

UP: Locals tonsure youth's head for posting morphed images with girls

Locals tonsured a youth's head shaved, blackened his face and paraded him in the area over allegations of harassing girls and posting morphed pictures of himself with them on social media.The incident took place in Saharakhurd village of Iglas zone on November 5. The youth has been identified as Waqeel, who requires crutches to walk. He was also beaten up by residents and later jailed by the police over the charges against him. Pence vows US will hold Khashoggi murderers to account

Vice-president Mike Pence vowed Saturday the US would hold the murderers of Jamal Khashoggi to account, following media reports that the CIA had concluded the Saudi Crown Prince was behind the journalist's killing. "The United States is determined to hold all of those accountable who are responsible for that murder," Pence said on the sidelines of an APEC summit in Papua New Guinea. Man sent to 10 years in jail for killing wife over dowry

A fast-track court has sentenced a man to 10 years' imprisonment for killing his wife over dowry in 2013. According to the prosecution, judge Balraj Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on Mithun after holding him guilty under IPC Section 304 A on Friday. Mithun's father and mother were acquitted in the case due to lack of evidence. 38-year-old Dalit man killed in UP

A 38-year-old Dalit man was allegedly killed and his body dumped outside his house here, police said Saturday. Manoj Kumar had gone to work and did not return home. Later, his body was dumped outside his house at Hareti village under Purkazi police station in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, a case has been registered against three people -- Surender, Yashpal and Sukhbir -- based on a complaint by the brother of the deceased. SC agrees to examine plea against stray dog culling in Karnataka

The Supreme Court has agreed to examine a plea seeking contempt action against the chief officer of a municipal council in Karnataka and a private contractor on allegations of mass culling of stray dogs. A bench of Justices N V Ramana and M M Shantanagoudar issued notice to Wilson VT, Chief officer of Municipal Council of Sakaleshapura town, and contractor V George Robert and sought their response in four weeks. Advocate Siddharth Garg, appearing for petitioner animal rights activist Neveena Kamath, said the contempt proceedings should be initiated against the two respondents for willfully disobeying the specific directions of the apex court. He said that on November 18, 2015, the apex court had directed that all local authorities and panchayats should strictly follow the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960 and the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2001 and that no "subterfuge or innovative methods" to circumvent the order of the court will be tolerated. Four killed, five injured after being hit by car

At least four persons, including a 16-year-old boy, died and five others were injured after being hit by a car at Shahapur in Thane district of Maharashtra Saturday morning, police said. The deceased and the injured were waiting for transport vehicles to go to Nashik when the accident took place around 7 am near Kihnavali bridge, police said. "After being alerted about the incident, police rushed to the spot and rushed the injured to a nearby hospital, where four of them were declared dead," an official said. The injured, including two minor girls and a couple, were shifted from Shahapur Rural Hospital to Thane Civil Hospital, they said. Local MLA Pandurang Barora, who visited the spot, said, "Some of the victims even fell off the bridge after being hit by the speeding vehicle.

Arms dealer convicted in LA of trying to buy, sell missiles

Authorities say a black-market arms dealer who tried to buy anti-aircraft missiles and sell them to clients in the Middle East has been convicted of conspiracy in Los Angeles. Rami Asad-Ghanem was convicted Thursday and faces 25 years to life in prison. Authorities say Ghanem, who's a naturalized US citizen, conspired to transfer missiles to customers around the world. They say in one case, he arranged to hire mercenaries to operate missiles for a Libyan militant group. Following a tip from a Los Angeles military supply firm, authorities arranged a sting operation, and Ghanem was arrested in Athens in 2015 after trying to buy sniper rifles and other military equipment. Ghanem pleaded guilty last month to other federal crimes including smuggling and money laundering. He awaits sentencing on those charges.

Erdogan, Trump agree no 'cover-up' of Khashoggi murder should be allowed

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his US counterpart Donald Trump Friday agreed on the need to prevent a cover up of journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder, a Turkish presidential source said after a phone call between the two leaders. One arrested, 2 nabbed for killing doctor during robbery bid

One person was arrested and two others apprehended for allegedly killing a 57-year-old doctor at his residence in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri area during a robbery, police said Friday. The arrested accused was a resident of Bhalaswa Dairy, the police said, adding that they were verifying his age to ascertain if he was a minor. The other two accused, aged about 19 years, were nabbed Friday night and they were residents of Jahangirpuri, a senior police officer said. Zuma has been charged with 16 counts of fraud, racketeering and money laundering relating to the arms deal dating back to before he took office in 2009. Head constable on duty at Delhi Secretariat kills self with service pistol

A Delhi Police head constable, who was on duty at the Delhi Secretariat, allegedly killed himself Friday using his service pistol as he was depressed after being publicly thrashed by his in-laws, police said. Sohanveer, 35, was on duty at the VVIP parking at the Secretariat. Police were informed about the incident at 5.30 am, a senior officer said. A suicide note has been recovered from him which indicated domestic discord with his wife and in-laws as the reason for taking such an extreme step, police said. His wife is a constable with the Delhi Police, they said. In the note, Sohanveer alleged that his wife had an extra marital affair with a man in her village and when he took up the matter with his in-laws, they blamed him for defaming their daughter. Woman slaps additional district collector

A woman allegedly roughed up an additional district collector here Friday for not giving judgement in her favour in a land dispute case, police said. The woman has been detained, they said. The woman, a resident of Jafrabad, had 1.3 acres of land. On April 13 1998, one Arun Vishnu Bhagyawant produced a sale deed, according to which, her husband had sold the land to him for Rs 2.15 lakh, the police said. However, the woman did not accept the sale deed and challenged its veracity before the local tehsildar (revenue official), who ruled in favour of Bhagyawant, they said. Later, she filed an appeal before an additional district collector, who, too, gave verdict against her, the police said. Angered over the order, she barged into the officer's cabin at around 5 pm Friday and allegedly slapped him and rouged him up, they added.
