An Apna Dal MLA in Uttar Pradesh has alleged that he has received a letter threatening him of dire consequences and demanding Rs 3 crore as extortion money, police said Friday. On the complaint of MLA Sangamlal Gupta, a case was registered against unidentified people, they said. Gupta had received a letter which said he would be killed if he failed to pay Rs 3 crore 10 days, police said. The matter is being investigated.
A Delhi court Friday took cognisance of a criminal defamation complaint filed against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for his alleged "scorpion" remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal fixed December 22 for recording the statement of the complainant, Delhi BJP leader Rajeev Babbar. The complaint alleged that Tharoor, with "mala fide intention, made the statement which is not only abuse of the Hindu deity but also defamatory". In his complaint, Babbar said being a vice-president of the BJP's Delhi unit, he was "identified as a worker/supporter of Narendra Modi and BJP" and that Tharoor's statement hurt his religious sentiment. The complaint termed the statement "intolerable abuse" and "absolute vilification" of the faith of the people. The North Korean government decided to deport an American citizen, who was detained for illegally entering the communist country, its state media said on Friday.According to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the US citizen, identified as Bruce Byron Lowrance, was detained, as he trespassed the North Korea-China border last month, Yonhap News Agency reported.The KCNA also said that the citizen confessed to entering North Korea under the orders of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). However, the report did not mention when he would be deported.Earlier in May, North Korea had released three American detainees ahead of the unprecedented meeting between its leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore.
The CVC has made some "very uncomplimentary" findings in its probe on corruption allegations against CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma and wanted further investigations into some of the charges which required more time, the Supreme Court said Friday, adding there were also some "very complimentary" conclusions. A 25-year-old woman, who was about to get married soon and had got engaged a few days back, is in a serious condition after unidentified men threw acid on her here, police said Friday. The incident took place around 8 pm on Thursday near the entrance of the woman's residence on Tibba road. She has suffered burn injuries on the upper parts of her body and was rushed to a hospital, where her condition is stated to be serious, the police said. : The Election Commission has reduced thecash expenditure limit of a contesting candidate to Rs 10,000 per day from the earlier Rs 20,000, Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar said here Friday. Speaking to reporters, he said the EC's decision was communicated to him on Thursday and the directive will be strictly implemented. A sub-inspector of Haryana Police was shot dead allegedly by a murder accused in Rewari district, an official spokesperson said on Friday. The incident took place when the 49-year-old police officer, identified as Ranbir Singh, had gone to arrest the accused, Naresh, he said.
