A contractor allegedly duped a private club here in Maharashtra of Rs 25 lakh in connection with the task given to it of constructing bio- toilets in the city, police said Wednesday. Based on a complaint by the Rotary Club, the contractor was booked by the city police on Monday under IPC sections for cheating and forgery, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. The club had given a contract worth Rs 62.1 lakh to a contractor for construction of 270 bio-toilets in the city. It initially paid Rs 25.31 lakh to him for the work. The contractor later claimed to have constructed 77 toilets and submitted a bill of Rs 21.06 lakh for it to the club, Narkar said. However, when the club conducted an inspection, it found that work on only 27 toilets was completed, she said. The club subsequently lodged a complaint against the contractor, she said, adding that a probe was underway in the case.
The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought response from the Centre, AAP government and the Delhi Assembly Speaker's office on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash's plea against the breach of privilege proceedings initiated against him. The proceedings were initiated against Prakash by the Assembly's Privileges Committee based on complaints by the Question and Reference Committee (QRC) and the Protocol Committee. A bench of Justice Vibhu Bhakhru issued notices on the plea seeking setting aside of the breach of privilege proceedings. The chief secretary had early this year challenged breach of privilege proceedings initiated against him by Assembly panels for not appearing before them.

The Delhi High Court Wednesday dismissed self-styled preacher Daati Maharaj's plea for review of its decision transferring the probe in the rape case against him to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao passed the order on Maharaj's plea seeking review of the court's October 3 order. The court had on October 3 transferred the probe to the CBI from the Delhi Police's Crime Branch on the plea of woman who had alleged she was sexually assaulted by the preacher. The high court had said that the manner in which the probe was carried out by police "casts a shadow on the investigation". The bench had said the police did not arrest the accused in the case even after recording the complainant's statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). A surveyor with the land record office here in Maharashtra was arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 25,000, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said Wednesday. Dinesh Pashte was caught accepting the bribe money at his office in Vasai area on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency said in a release. The 50-year-old land surveyor had allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from a man for saving his six unauthorised shops from being demolished, the ACB said in a release. The man agreed to pay the amount and at the same time lodged a complaint with the ACB. A trap was laid and Pashte was caught accepting Rs 25,000 as bribe, ACB's Deputy Superintendent of Police Anjali Andale said. The accused was later placed under arrest and booked under relevant sections of the Prevention ofCorruptionAct, the release added.
Three Indian-origin persons, including a woman, in California have been sentenced for crimes relating to their involvement in a USD 9.3 million mortgage fraud scheme. Surjit Singh, 72 was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison, his son, Rajeshwar Singh, 44 was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison on counts of mail fraud, bank fraud and false statements on loan and credit applications. Surjit is in custody. Rajeshwar and Anita Sharma are scheduled to self-surrender on January 9, 2019. According to court documents and evidence produced at trial, the defendants were responsible for the origination of more than USD 9.3 million in fraudulently procured residential mortgage loans. The Supreme Court Wednesday commenced its crucial hearing on pleas seeking court-monitored probe into procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph is likely to peruse the pricing details submitted by the government in a sealed cover. The Supreme Court Wednesday declined to stay its September 28 verdict allowing entry of women of all age groups into the Sabarimala temple. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked a lawyer, who was seeking stay on its Sabarimala verdict, to wait till January 22 when the Constitution bench will hear review petitions. A woman home guard, posted with the Civil Lines police station here, was allegedly sexually harassed and beaten up by a bus conductor when she was going to work, police said Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday and a case was registered on a complaint by the woman. The matter is being investigated, Station House Officer DK Tyagi said. The home guard has alleged that she was sexually harassed by the conductor, who tried to tear her clothes, and beaten up when she resisted, he said.

Hate crimes reported to the FBI soared about 17 per cent across the US in 2017 compared to the previous year, a FBI report showed released Tuesday.
The FBI says hate crimes reports were up about 17 percent in 2017, marking a rise for the third year in a row. An annual report shows there were more than 7,100 reported hate crimes last year. There were increases in attacks motivated by racial bias, religious bias and because of a victim's sexual orientation. The report, released Tuesday, shows there was a nearly 23 percent increase in religion-based hate crimes. There was a 37 percent spike in anti-Jewish hate crimes. Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker says the report is a "call to action." He says the offenses were "despicable violations of our core values as Americans." The FBI says although the number of attacks has increased, so has the number of law enforcement agencies reporting hate-crime data.
A married couple was found dead at their rented home in Niti Khand Indirapuram here, police said Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Kanchan Gupta, 35, and her husband Pravesh Kumar, 24, they added. Pravesh, a native of Saraswati Vihar Loni, was depressed as his wife had lodged a sexual abuse report against him in December 2017, for which he had been imprisoned for nearly four months and later bailed out, said city Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar. The case was still under trial in district courts. Pravesh had a court date on Monday, however he did not attend it. As Pravesh did not go for the court date, his mother Shushila went to his flat in Niti Khand. No one responded to her repeated knocking and she sensed a foul smell emanating from the home, which prompted her to alert the police, officials said. Seven suspected robbers were arrested in Gautam Buddh Nagar after daggers and over half a kg cannabis were seized from them Tuesday, police said. The accused were held near the Salarpur underpass in Dankaur area during a routine inspection by police officials, they said. Those arrested have been identified as Vineet, Shaqeel, Deepak, Kuldeep, Zahid, Nazaaqat and Naushaad -- all locals, said Dankur Police Station House Officer Rajpal Tomar. A court here Tuesday reserved orders on the bail petition filed by mining baron and former state minister G Janardhana Reddy, arrested in connection with a multi-crore ponzi scheme case. The head of Ahmedabad police's crime branch, J K Bhatt, has filed a criminal defamation suit against a person accused of syphoning off Rs 260 crore of investors' money. Accused Vinay Shah and his wife Bhargavi Shah have become untraceable after two FIRs were registered against them at Vastrapur police station in the last two days, a police official said. However, before closing their office in the city and vanishing, Vinay Shah purportedly posted a 'suicide letter' on social media, claiming that he had paid Rs 86 lakh to Bhatt's middleman as "protection money". A 40-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by her neighbour with a flower pot after she accused him of making indecent comments in south Rohini, police said Tuesday. The incident took place on November 10, they added. In a CCTV footage that has gone viral on social media, the woman and her family members can be seen attacked by a group of men. In a complaint filed by the woman, she alleged that while she was sitting with her son and a relative near her residence, a neighbour made indecent comments on her which led to a quarrel between them, a senior officer said.
