Woman asks man to pay Rs 10 lakh or face rape charge, arrested

A woman has been arrested in Greater Noida for allegedly blackmailing a man and threatening to implicate him in a false rape case if he did not pay Rs 10 lakh to her, police said Monday. The incident was reported from Lakhnawali village, under Surajpur police station limits, and the accused was arrested Sunday, police said. The accused and the complainant were friends for some time and she had asked for money from him on multiple occasions citing various reasons, a police official said. On October 11, the man approached police claiming that the woman had demanded Rs 10 lakh from him and threatened to implicate him in a false rape case if he did not pay the money, Station House Officer, Surajpur, Muneesh Chauhan said. An FIR was lodged and the matter was probed following which an investigation was conducted during which text messages shared between them were also reviewed, he said. Gunmen kill police officer, 2 others in Pakistan

Unidentified gunmen on Monday opened fire from a car and killed a police officer, his driver and guard in Sheikhupura district of Pakistan's Punjab province. Station House Officer (SHO) Zahid Mehmood was travelling from his home to Lahore when the gunmen opened fire on his car, police said. The SHO's driver and guard died on the spot while Mehmood succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The attackers fled the site after the attack. Police have erected district-wide blockades and initiated a search operation to arrest the suspected attackers.

Khashoggi's son hopes his father didn't undergo 'painful' death

As details of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's brutal killing surface, the scribe's son, Abdullah, hopes that his father did not die a painful death.Abdullah, in an interview with CNN, appealed to the Saudi authorities to reclaim his father's body. Delhi Court postpones hearing in assault case against AAP MLA

A Delhi Court on Monday fixed November 19 as the date for main arguments on the appeal filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sahiram Pehalwan challenging his conviction in a case related to the alleged assault on a youth in 2016.The Patiala House Court (Sessions Court) has stayed the earlier order of magistrate court, which convicted Pehalwan, an MLA from Tughlakabad, and imposed a fine of Rs 2 Lakh on him.Earlier, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal had convicted Pehalwan and imposed a fine on him.Vishal had not been awarded any jail term and gave Pehalwan "an opportunity to reform", in an earlier judgement.Besides the AAP MLA, two other co-convicts who were also asked to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh each, also approached the court against the order.

Appeals filed for 2 Myanmar journalists in secrets case

Lawyers for two Reuters journalists imprisoned in Myanmar have appealed the verdict that sent them to prison for seven years for illegal possession of official documents. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo had been reporting on the brutal crackdown on the Muslim Rohingya minority when they were arrested and charged with violating Myanmar's colonial-era Official Secrets Act. They had pleaded not guilty, contending that they were framed by police. Reuters president Stephen Adler said in a statement Monday that the court's ruling had ignored "compelling evidence of a police set-up, serious due process violations, and the prosecution's failure to prove any of the key elements of the crime.

30-year-old woman arrested for killing husband

A 30-year-old housewife has been arrested for allegedly killing her husband near here in Maharashtra, police said Monday. The accused, Shilpa Bari, a resident of Dahanu in Palghar district, was arrested Sunday night and booked for murder, Inspector Sambaji Yadav of the Gholwad police station said. The victim, Umesh Bari (35), was found dead in his house on November 2, the police said, adding subsequently a case of accidental death was registered. The body was sent for post-mortem and the report indicated the victim was strangulated, they said. The police converted the accidental death case into one of murder and started probe. During the probe, it was revealed the accused was fed up with her husband coming home drunk frequently and harassing her, the police said. To get rid of constant harassment at the hands of her husband, the woman, a housewife, allegedly strangled him with a rope and tried to pass it as a case of suicide, they said. Pregnant woman dies during abortion in UP, 1 held

A man was arrested here in connection with the death of his girlfriend in Kutubpur village, police said Monday. On September 18, Asmin's body was found near a forest here, SSP Sudhir Kumar. The woman was pregnant and died during an abortion, he said. Later, the man, identified as Husain, threw his girlfriend's body in a forest, Kumar said, adding that a case was filed against him under IPC section 304 A (Punishment for culpable homicide).

Six police suspects held in Mexico extrajudicial killings

Mexican authorities have accused six municipal police officers of being responsible for the extrajudicial killings of two people in violence-wracked Veracruz state. The police officers were charged with homicide and failure to prevent the crimes that transpired, the local state prosecutor said in a statement Sunday. The murders took place Thursday in Orizaba, a town about 250 kilometres outside Mexico City, when police fired on Ernesto Perez Gonzalez and his brother Roman. Police suspected in these crimes have been detained and are being held in a medium security prison. This is not the first time civilians have been attacked by law enforcement agencies in Veracruz state, where organised crime groups are active and there is a significant record of people going missing. In October, eight state police officers accused of the enforced disappearance of a person in 2014 were arrested. Then in February, the government of Veracruz imprisoned 19 policemen who were active and three commanders .

Pak national freed after 16 yrs, takes Bhagavad Gita home

A Pakistani national, Jalaluddin, who was released from Varanasi Central Jail on Sunday after 16 years, took home Bhagavad Gita with him.Jalaluddin was arrested from Varanasi's Cantonment area with suspicious documents and is now on his way back to his country.Senior Superintendent of Varanasi Central Jail Ambrish Gaud told the media that in 2001, Jalaluddin hailed from Sindh province in Pakistan, and was arrested from the Cantonment area. He was nabbed near the Air Force office by the police with some suspicious documents.The police had recovered maps of the Cantonment area and other important places from Jalaluddin. Rickshaw driver arrested for raping minor niece: Police

A 32-year-old rickshaw driver was arrested for allegedly raping his 10-year-old niece in east Delhi's Shakarpur area Sunday, police said. The girl was allegedly raped by the accused at her residence, when her parents were away, they added. Initially, the police were informed that the girl was raped at her uncle's residence, but later, it was learnt that she was raped at her residence. She told her parents about the incident, following which the police were informed. A case was registered and the girl was sent for a medical examination, which confirmed rape.

Cong demands SC-monitored probe into witness' claims in Pandya murder case

The Congress Sunday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into claims made by a witness in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh alleged fake encounter case that a former policeman had given a contract to kill then Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya. Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said even after 15 years of investigation into Pandya's murder, the guilty were still at large and the probe was "inconclusive". Pandya was killed in 2003 while he was out for morning walk in Ahmedabad. Azam Khan, an associate of Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram Prajapati and a key witness in the case, recently claimed in the court that a former Gujarat IPS officer had given contract to kill the BJP leader. Another arrested in Sirmaur's Rs 40-lakh online fraud case

The Himachal Pradesh police has arrested another accused in the Rs 40-lakh online fraud case registered at Shillai Police Station here, officials said Sunday. A special investigation team (SIT) of Sirmaur police arrested the second accused, Satyajit Majumdar, from Kolkata in West Bengal, Sirmaur Superintendent of Police Rohit Malpani said. The SIT sought transit remand for Majumdar from a local court in 24 Parganas of Kolkata, he said, adding that the accused was granted interim anticipatory for transit and was directed to be present in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Paonta Sahib on November 16. Property dealer arrested for duping owner of Rs 65 lakh: Cops

A property broker was arrested after he passed off bundles of Bhagwati Jagran receipts as wads of notes worth Rs 65 lakh to a seller, police said Sunday. City Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said property dealer Naresh Kaushik was a broker in a deal for the sale of two shops at Rs 1.23 crore, a part of which was to be given in cash. Kaushik showed the property owner, Rajendra Nath Grover Rs 65 lakh in cash at his house, but after registration of the sale deeds for shops at the Ghaziabad sub-registry office, handed over to him bundles of 'Bhagwati Jagran' receipts of Rs 2,000 currency notes size, wrapped in a red cloth. Grover lodged a complaint with the police, which raided Kaushik's residence and recovered cash worth Rs 64 lakh from him, Kumar said. The police also arrested Kaushik on charges of cheating and forgery, he added.
