35-yr-old woman found dead in Rajasthan

The blood-stained body of a 35-year-old woman was found on the Jhalawar-Baran mega highway on Wednesday, police said. The deceased was identified as Ratana Jairaj Modi, a native of Gujarat. According to preliminary investigation, the woman was attacked with a sharp weapon on Tuesday night, SHO at the Mundawar police station Murlidhar said. A car, bearing Gujarat number plate, was found abandoned near Bagher Ghat, he said. "We have lodged a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC," the SHO said. DSP Khanpur range Vimal Singh said police have detained one suspect for interrogation in this connection and seized a blood-stained sharp weapon lying near the body of the woman.

Hashimpura case: HC allows Swamy's plea to make public report of CB-CID of UP Police

The Delhi High Court Wednesday allowed BJP leader Subramanian Swamy's plea to make public the report of CB-CID, Uttar Prdaesh police, in the 1987 massacre of Muslims at Hashimpura locality in Meerut, in which it sentenced 16 former police personnel to life imprisonment. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel, however, declined Swamy's plea for further probe by an SIT into the massacre. The high court in its judgment noted that in the over three decades since the massacre, no significant developments are stated to have taken place, or on other leads have been unearthed that warrant the direction for further SIT probe. The plea for further SIT probe was sought by Swamy in his appeal challenging the acquittal of the 16 former PAC personnel by the trial court.

Unaccounted cash Rs 18 lakh seized in Rajasthan, 3 held

Unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 18 lakh was seized and three suspected hawala traders were arrested in this connection in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district, a police official said Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, police raided two places in Gol Pyau and Nagauri Garden areas and seized the money, he said. Dhaiya Lal Prajapat (30) and Rangaram Prajapat (45) were arrested with cash worth Rs 11.50 lakh. The accused persons later told police about the location of their co-accused Narayan (46), the official said. The police arrested Narayan and seized cash worth Rs 6.50 lakh from his possession, he said. The Income Tax Department has been informed about the matter, which will further investigate the case, he added.

Sabarimala row: SC refuses early hearing of review petitions

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to conduct an early hearing of review petitions against its verdict allowing entry of women of all ages into Kerala's Sabarimala Temple.Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi said that the temple will be open for 24 hours on November 5 and 6, adding that the court has already fixed the matter for hearing after November 11.The Sabarimala Temple and surrounding areas witnessed a string of protests recently over the Supreme Court's decision to quash restrictions on the entry of women between the ages of 10 and 50 into the holy shrine.As many as 3505 protestors have been arrested so far in connection with the violence that broke out in the state, while around 529 cases were registered across the state as on Sunday.

Man arrested for making 'derogatory' remarks against PM

A man was arrested for allegedly using derogatory language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some BJP leaders in a video posted on social media, police said Wednesday. Jenish Rajkumar was arrested at Saravilai near here, they said. According to police, he recorded the video in April when he was in Qatar and had used derogatory terms against the prime minister while commenting on the Kathua rape and death of a minor girl. Based on a complaint lodged by BJP district general secretary C Thangappan, Rajkumar was arrested, police added.

Woman abducted in J-K's Poonch, rescued hours later

A woman was allegedly abducted by a man in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, but was rescued within hours, police said Wednesday. The woman was rescued after one Mohmmad Qadir filed a police complaint at the Mendhar police station that his wife was abducted by Shah Nawaz Ahmad of Rajouri from her home Tuesday evening, they said. Raids were conducted at various places and the woman was rescued from a house in Thuddi Khandli in Rajouri within eight hours of her abduction, police said.

Man arrested for ATM fraud in J-K's Poonch

A man was arrested for allegedly withdrawing money from another person's bank account after fraudulently getting possession of his ATM card in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, police said Wednesday. Liyaqat Hussain of Kanuvyian village in the district was arrested within 12 hours of receiving a complaint in connection with the incident, a police official said. Mohammad Aslam of Mamankote village of Chasana-Mahore lodged a written complaint Tuesday that while withdrawing money at an ATM in Poonch town, Hussain came there and managed to exchange his ATM card. He withdrew Rs 38,000 from his account, the official said. Taking cognizance of the matter, he said a case was registered and Hussain arrested with the help of CCTV camera footage of the incident. The accused confessed the crime and the ATM card of the complainant along with the money was recovered from his possession, he said.

Delhi court reserves verdict on bail plea of CBI DSP

A Delhi court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on the bail plea of CBI DSP Devender Kumar arrested in connection with bribery allegations involving the agency's Special Director Rakesh Asthana. Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann said he would pass order later during the day after both sides complete their arguments. During the hearing, the lawyer appearing for Kumar told the court that every rule has been violated by CBI in this case against him and the "irony" is that the person who followed the rule is in jail. The CBI did not oppose his bail petition. In his bail application, Kumar had termed his custody "illegal" and urged the court to set him free. 2 die in explosion at illegal firecracker godown in UP

Two persons were killed and as many others were injured in an explosion at an illegal firecracker godown in Shivpur Bazar here, police said Wednesday. The incident took place Tuesday night when the fire crackers stored behind an electronics shop in the market exploded, Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover said. The four injured were rushed to a hospital where Nafees (18) died. Two others were referred to the Lucknow Medical College Hospital with serious injuries where Saddam (17) succumbed to injuries, he said. A case has been lodged in this connection and further action is being initiated, the SP said. District Magistrate Mala Srivastava said a meeting of departments concerned has been convened for putting an effective check on illegal trade of fire crackers. HC junks PIL asking Centre, NCW to inquire about #MeToo cases on social media

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined to entertain a PIL seeking that the Centre and the National Commission for Women (NCW) to on their own inquire about the instances of sexual harassment and assault highlighted under the #MeToo movement on the social media. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao said, "We are not inclined to entertain it. Please don't waste our time. Let the affected individual come. Dismissed." The petition by a lawyer, Joginder Kumar Sukhija, said that under the #MeToo campaign several women disclosed instances of sexual harassment suffered by them, but the NCW "failed" to perform its duty to enquire into such matters. The lawyer wanted the NCW and the Ministry for Women and Child Development to "suo motu take notice" of matters related to sexual harassment and assault that were appearing on the social media under the #MeToo movement.
