Pune MLA tries to touch feet of man who filed extortion FIR

A video of a Maharashtra BJP MLA purportedly trying to touch the feet of a man who had filed an FIR against him for extortion was displayed here Tuesday. The complainant Ravindra Barate had on October 12 lodged an FIR against Yogesh Tilekar, the MLA from Hadapsar in Pune, his brother Chetan and one Ganesh Kamthe under IPC section 385 (extortion) for allegedly demanding Rs 50 lakh from a firm to allow it to lay optical fibre cables for internet in an area in Hadapsar. While addressing a press conference Tuesday, Barate claimed he had approached Kondhwa police station with a complaint application against Tileker and two others on September 8. Controversy over posters of Tejaswi, rape-tainted RJD leader

In a fresh controversy surrounding RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's ongoing Samvidhan Bachao Yatra, posters were put up in Nawada district ahead of his arrival there featuring him with local MLA Raj Ballabh Yadav who is in jail for allegedly raping a minor girl. Man held in Delhi for supplying illegal arms

A man has been arrested from northwest Delhi's Kanjhawala village for allegedly supplying illegal weapons, police said Tuesday. The accused has been identified as Deepak alias Rajesh, who is a resident of Delhi's Bakkarwala area, they said. On Monday, police received information that an arms supplier Deepak would come to Kanjhawala to deliver a consignment of weapons. Thereafter, police laid a trap and at around 5.40 pm the accused arrived, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Kumar Singla said. During interrogation Deepak told police that he has been arrested in about a dozen criminal cases previously, he said. When he was in jail in 2014, Deepak met an arms supplier, Manish, a resident of Bulandshahr, Singla said. After coming out on bail they both started working together. 20-yr-old arrested in online harassment case

A 20-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly harassing a woman on social media, police said Tuesday. The accused, identified as Deevakar Shakya, a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Delhi, is a final year Bachelor in Commerce student, they said. On October 16, the victim filed a complaint at Geeta Colony Police Station, stating an unidentified person had created a fake Facebook account using her name and photograph. The user of the profile was sending her morphed, vulgar photographs on her original Facebook account, officials said. These photos would mostly be morphed nude pictures take from the internet where the accused would superimpose the victim's face on them, the victim said in her plaint. Ayodhya title suit: Haryana minister disappointed over adjournment

Haryana Minister Anil Vij has expressed disappointment over adjournment of the Ayodhya title suit case by the Supreme Court.He said, "The Supreme Court is great, it can do whatever it wants. It can open at 12 in the night for Yakub Memom, but it can keep deferring the hearing on Ram Mandir for which people have been desperately waiting. It all depends on the Supreme Court."On Monday, the court adjourned the hearing on the Ayodhya title suit case until January 2019 to fix the date of hearing in the matter.The top court had adjourned the matter which challenged the Allahabad High Court ruling of 2010. CBI vs CBI: Devender Kumar, Manoj Prasad sent to 14-day judicial custody

A Delhi Court remanded Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devender Kumar and Dubai-based businessman and middleman Manoj Prasad, who were arrested in connection with bribery allegations against the agency's Special Director Rakesh Asthana, to judicial custody for 14 days.On Monday, Kumar had moved a bail application before the special court following his arrest by the CBI last week. In his application, Kumar mentioned that the agency did not have valid search warrants when his office and residence were raided by the agency's anti-corruption unit. During the raid, Kumar's personal computers were also seized by the officials.Asthana, who has been sent on leave along with CBI director Alok Verma, was named in an FIR by businessman Satish Babu Sana. The court will hear Kumar's bail application on Thursday.

Orphanage case: Ex-Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia's sentence doubled

A Bangladesh court on Tuesday extended the sentence of former Prime Minister and chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Khaleda Zia from five to 10 years in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.According to the Dhaka Tribune, the sentence was extended after the court accepted Anti-Corruption Commission's petition seeking to increase Khaleda's imprisonment.Earlier this year, Khaleda along with five others including her son Tarique Rehman was sentenced to five years in prison in the orphanage corruption case. The case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in 2008 pertains to alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to 2.1 crore taka that were said to have come from a foreign bank in the form of grants for orphans.This comes a day after Khaleda was sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with Zia Charitable Trust graft case.Khaleda has served as Bangladesh Prime Minister for two terms, 1991-1996 and 2001-2006.

Scribe beaten to death in Jharkhand

A 32-year-old journalist of a vernacular daily was allegedly abducted and beaten to death by unidentified people in Jharkhand's Chatra district, police said Tuesday. According to Superintendent of Police Akhilesh B Beriar, Chandan Tiwari, who worked for Hindi daily 'Aaj', was last seen near his home at around 8 pm on Monday. The police was informed that some unidentified people have abducted Tiwari and had taken him towards a jungle near Baltherwa village under Simaria administrative area -- around 110 km northwest of Ranchi, Beriar said. The body of Tiwari, a resident of Dumbi village of the district, was found in the morning from the jungle. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, the officer said. Court rejects Mallya plea against ED proceedings for FEO tag

A special court Tuesday rejected businessman Vijay Mallya's plea seeking a stay on the proceedings initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to declare him a fugitive economic offender (FEO). Special judge M S Azmi rejected Mallya's plea and said the court will hear arguments on the main ED plea to declare the beleaguered industrialist an FEO on November 22. The special court had heard extensive arguments on Friday from Mallya's lawyer as well as the ED counsel on his petition seeking a stay on proceedings of the financial crime probe agency against him. The ED has sought that Mallya, who is currently in the UK, be declared an FEO and his properties be confiscated and brought under the control of the Union government as per provisions of the new FEO Act. Guj HC quashes rape case against Swaminarayan sect priest

The Gujarat High Court Tuesday quashed an FIR of rape registered against a priest of the Swaminarayan sect after the woman who had filed a case against him told the court that she didn't want to pursue the matter. A division bench of justices A S Dave and A Y Kogje allowed the petition moved by priest Karan Swarup Babubhai Savani (24) to quash the FIR lodged against him after the woman, who was present in the court Tuesday, submitted an affidavit stating that she had no objection if the FIR is dismissed, and that she did not want to pursue the matter. The woman had earlier alleged that Savani had raped her on two occasions this month in a room adjacent to the Swaminarayan temple at Dabholi under the pretext of helping her financially for her mother's surgery. MP hospital goof-up: Christian cremated after body handed over

In a major goof-up on the part of a state-run hospital here, a 57-year-old Christian man's body was handed over by its staffers to the relatives of a Hindu deceased who cremated him as per customs in Badwai village near here, police said Tuesday. HC judge to supervise IGPs probe

The Orissa High Court Tuesday ordered that a sitting judge of the court will supervise on a day-to-day basis the investigation being conducted by crime branch IGP into the four criminal cases registered in August on the police-lawyer face off. SC junks plea challenging Trai's tariff order for channels

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea challenging the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's March, 2017 regulations and tariff order relating to fixation of charges for free and pay channels. It said in view of any inconsistency, the TRAI Act must prevail over the Copyright Act with regard to issues such as royalties and compensation to be paid. A bench comprising Justices Rohinton F Nariman and Navin Sinha said the Regulation and the Tariff Order have been made keeping the interests of the stakeholders and the consumers in mind and are "intra vires" the regulation power contained in Section 36 of the TRAI Act. Puducherry MLA, father sentenced to one year in jail in disproportionate assets case

A CBI court on Tuesday sentenced opposition All India NR Congress (AINRC) legislator Ashok Anand and his father to one-year imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case. The CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch, Chennai, had registered a case against the legislator, his father C Anand and mother Vijayalakshmi for accumulating assets to the tune of Rs 3.75 crore, disproportionate to their known sources of income, between January 1, 1997 and January 7, 2006. Vijayalakshmi expired during the trial and the charges against her were abated. CBI special judge P Dhanabal delivered the verdict. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on Anand and his father, who is a former public works department chief engineer, under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
