In one of the biggest crackdown on gold smuggling in the two years, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 55 kg of smuggled gold worth Rs 18.2 crore from West Bengal's Siliguri and arrested two persons, an official said on Saturday.
The Orissa High Court Saturday asked all sessions judges of the state to hold camp courts in jails and decide pending bail applications of undertrial prisoners (UTPs) to reduce the pressure on overcrowded prisons. Jails across the state are bursting at the seams as functioning of courts has been paralysed due to strike by lawyers for nearly two months. The high court instructed sessions judges to communicate its decision to all criminal courts under their jurisdiction to hold camp courts within the jail premises during working hours on each working day. The presiding officers accompanied by the court staff and jail para-legal volunteers shall hold camp courts to enlarge the UTPs on bail, the order issued by the High Court registry said. In case of arrest and first production, the same may be made in the camp courts inside the jail, it said. The jail authorities were also instructed to ensure that during the time of hearings, none apart from the court staff and court sub-inspector are .
The Election Commission (EC) Friday evening directed concerned authorities to file a complaint with police against organisers of BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra's press conference here. Patra Saturday held a press conference on the roadside in front of a commercial building in MP Nagar area here and targeted Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the National Herald case. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Saturday said the Supreme Court should pronounce its judgement in the Ram temple case as it had done on the matter of Sabarimala temple. Describing the Ram temple issue as a matter of faith for the people of India, Yogi said the temple in Ayodhya assumes great significance in hearts of the people. A 20-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his three friends over an argument in Shadara's Krishna Nagar area, police said Saturday. The incident took place near Maharana Pratap park on Thursday evening. The victim had an argument with his friends after consuming alcohol, the police said. The man was attacked with a knife by the accused persons and sustained injuries in the abdomen, arm and face, they said. He was admitted to a government hospital, where he succumbed to injuries during treatment. A case was registered in the matter, police said, adding that the three accused persons were detained.

The BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary Saturday questioned the Committee of Administrators (CoA) for dealing with the alleged sexual harassment case against CEO Rahul Johri in the "most cavalier manner". The CoA has constituted a three-member independent panel comprising former Allahabad high court judge Justice Rakesh Sharma, former Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) chairperson Barkha Singh and former CBI director PC Sharma to probe the allegations levelled against Johri. A man, convicted for a rape case, was arrested on Saturday, two years after he allegedly jumped furlough, police said. A case was registered at Defence Colony police station against the convict where his daughter alleged that he had committed sexual assault on the prosecutrix, Ram Gopal Naik, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) said. Later, the accused was arrested and after the trial, he was convicted of life sentence by the trial court on April 29, 2010. However, the High Court reduced the sentence period from life imprisonment to 10 years, Naik said. While accused was undergoing the sentence, he was granted furlough for two weeks and was released on June 25, 2016. Later, he did not surrender after completing the furlough, the DCP added. A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed in Indore city of Madhya Pradesh, police said Saturday. A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused, a 25-year-old man whom the girl's family knew well, police said. The girl had gone missing Thursday evening. Her body was found near the drain under Krishnapura bridge Saturday, said Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) H C Mishra. Probe revealed that Honey Athwal, a family acquaintance, allegedly raped and smothered the girl, Mishra said. Athwal, whom the girl used to call 'uncle', allegedly abducted her after her tuition class, he said. After allegedly raping her, he smothered her and then absconded, the DIG said. Police are searching for him and have announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for his whereabouts, the officer added.
A 16-year old girl, allegedly kidnapped by a youth in Palamau district a few days ago to marry her, was rescued on Saturday, police said. The youth was caught in Medininagar town along with the girl who was sent for medical examination before she was handed over to her family, Superintendent of Police Inderjeet Mahata said. The youth abducted the girl from Chenpur in the district with a desire to marry her, Mahata said. Her father filed an FIR with Chenpur police station on October 23 in this connection. A local court remanded the youth to judicial custody for 14 days.
In a major crackdown on smugglers, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized over 100 kg gold in 48 hours during multi-city raids conducted by it, according to an official statement issued Saturday. It said the DRI officials seized 55 kg of gold bars (55 bars of 1 kg each) smuggled from neighbouring countries into India through land border. The smuggled gold was seized from two persons travelling by a vehicle near West Bengal's Siliguri on October 26 evening, the statement issued by the DRI said. The smuggled gold bars were concealed in a specially-prepared cavity under the driver's seat of the intercepted vehicle, the probe agency said. The gold bars, all of them of 99.99 per cent purity, have distinct Chinese and Australian foreign origin markings, it said. The gold bars were supposed to be delivered by the accused to a recipient at Siliguri for its onward transportation, the DRI said. Both the apprehended persons have been arrested, it said. An alleged drug peddler was arrested and 1.5 kilograms of charas was recovered from his possession here Saturday, police said. Ashok Kumar, a resident of Akhnoor, tried to escape after a passenger vehicle he was travelling in was stopped by police for checking at Rajeev Chowk in the city, a police official said. However, he was overpowered and his search led to the recovery of the contraband, he said, adding that a case under the the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against him.
Odisha police Saturday sought clarification from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on low level flying over eco-sensitive Chilika lake allegedly by former MP Baijayant Panda. The decision to seek more clarification on the issue was taken a day after the DGCA dismissed charges levelled against Panda that he had flown a helicopter dangerously low over Chilika Lake in September. Some properties of a contractor were sealed by police in Giridih district Saturday as he had purchased those properties with the money allegedly given to him by Maoists for investment, a senior police officer said here. A police team sealed a restaurant situated at station road, a house at Argaghat and landed property of the contractor Manoj Choudhary, Superintendent of Police, Surendra Jha said. The police had received information that Choudhary and another associate were investing the money collected by Maoists as extortion at different places, the SP said. He said that Choudhary had purchased land at different places in Giridih district. When the police entered the house of Choudhary at Argaghat they found four youth and two women in compromising position, the SP said, adding all of them, including the son of Choudhary were arrested.
In two separate cases in the city, three men claiming to be RTI activists were arrested on Saturday for allegedly extorting money from builders, police said. A senior police officer said a "well-organised racket" has been in operation in Thane since the last few years, and filing of RTI queries in order to extort money from builders has become their business. The three accused, including a former NCP corporator of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) who is presently a BJP worker, were arrested by the Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) of Thane police. Talking to reporters here, Thane AEC chief senior inspector Pradeep Sharma said, "Two affected builders came forward and lodged complaints separately at Kasarwadavali and Mumbra police stations against six persons, including the three arrested." Police arrested a man on Saturday on the charge of raping an eight-year-old girl, his neighbour, at a village in Odisha's Jajpur district. The incident took place when the girl had gone to a Laxmi Puja pandal near Jaraka Bazar in Dharmasala area on Thursday evening, police said. According to the complaint filed by her father, the 28-year-old accused lured the girl with snacks and took her on his bi-cycle to the nearby forest and raped her. He then brought her back and dumped her a few metres from home. After reaching home, the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother. Her father, along with other villagers, went to the house of the accused but he had fled by then, police said. The girl's father lodged an FIR on Friday and the police arrested the accused from a nearby village. Police conducted medical examination on both the accused and the minor girl at the district headquarters hospital at Jajpur town. A local court remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
A person was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district for allegedly sharing vital information with Pakistan spy agency ISI, police said Saturday. Mohammad Zahid was arrested Friday night and police in Bulandshahr have recovered secret documents and maps of prohibited areas from him among others, according to a release issued here. He was held after a tip off that a person in Khurja town in the district was sending secret documents, prohibited maps and other important information through different means to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as an agent, it said. The police release said a case was registered and the matter is being probed. It said a mobile phone, a voter ID card, Aadhaar card and Rs 2,540 in cash were also seized from him. Zahid is a resident of Khurja in Bulandshahr and had visited Pakistan twice to meet his relatives, according to the release.
