Bahl moves HC with defamation suit against Kashyap, Motwane

Filmmaker Vikas Bahl, accused of sexual assault by a former employee of Phantom Films, has filed a defamation suit against Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, his former partners in the production house. Bahl, the director of Kangana Ranaut-starrer "Queen", has also sought interim direction from the court seeking to restrain Kashyap and Motwane from making any further statements either to the media or on social media platforms against him. Hearing on Bahl's plea for interim direction was underway at the Bombay High Court Wednesday evening. His suit, filed Tuesday, alleged that Kashyap and Motwane made "defamatory, slanderous and baseless allegations" against him due to which he has suffered irreversible damage to the reputation. He labelled his former partners as opportunists, who allegedly orchestrated the whole campaign against him, making him look like the person responsible for the production house's fall. Hearing on Akbar's defamation plea to commence on Thursday

M J Akbar's criminal defamation complaint against journalist Priya Ramani, who has accused him of sexual misconduct around 20 years ago, is scheduled to come up for hearing on Thursday in the Patiala House court here. Akbar resigned as Minister of State for External Affairs on Wednesday following a spate of accusations of sexual misconduct levelled by several women. His lawyer Sandeep Kapur said the legal battle would commence from Thursday and the veteran journalist-turned politician would press for the prosecution of scribe Priya Ramani against whom he filed the defamation complaint when he was the minister. Kapur of law firm Karanjawala and Co said the private criminal defamation case would come up for hearing before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Samar Vishal. Drug peddler held in Jammu, heroin seized

An alleged drug peddler was arrested in Jammu and 50 grams of heroin was seized from his possession, the police said on Wednesday. Rayees Ahmad Ganai, a resident of Verinag area of Anantnag district was held near Ban in Nagrota area on Tuesday evening while he was on his way to Jammu, they said. When asked to stop by the police party, Ganai abandoned the vehicle and tried to escape but was caught after a brief chase, they added. The vehicle was seized and a case under NDPS act was registered against the accused.

Special Executive Magistrates not abusing their powers: Delhi Police to HC

Police has refuted in the Delhi High Court the allegation that its senior officers appointed as Special Executive Magistrates (SEM) were blatantly abusing their powers and discretion, saying they are being trained by lawyers and judges about relevant procedures and the law. The Delhi Police made the submission in an affidavit filed before a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao which was hearing a PIL by a Delhi resident who has alleged that Assistant Commissioners of Police, appointed as SEMs, were blatantly misusing and abusing their powers. The agency, represented by additional Delhi government standing counsel Sanjoy Ghose, said it has taken steps, like conducting training sessions for its SEMs and supervision of their work, to ensure they do not misuse or abuse of powers. Apart from that, information notice boards, displaying rights of the accused, have been put at police stations and SEM offices to ensure the public and litigants are aware about the relevant .

Man caught by customs for smuggling Rs 66 lakh worth gold at Delhi airport

A man has been arrested by customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 66 lakh at the Delhi airport, according to an official statement issued Wednesday. The passenger, aged 21, was intercepted after his arrival from Dubai on Monday. A search of his baggage resulted in the recovery of four gold pieces, crudely given the shape of a bar and collectively weighing 2.3 kg, the statement stated. The accused, a native of Delhi, was arrested and the gold was seized, it added.

Kejriwal assures help to family members of man shot dead by drug mafia in Taimoor Nagar

Family members of a 34-year-old man, who was allegedly shot dead by drug mafia in southeast Delhi's Taimoor Nagar last month, Wednesday met Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who assured them of all possible help from the AAP government. According to MLA Amanatullah Khan, the chief minister assured Rupesh Kumar's family that the AAP government will take care of education of his children, Rs 5 lakh as compensation and a job to his wife in civil defence. Khan said the family, accompanied by representatives of around 300 villages, met the chief minister at his official residence in the morning. The AAP Okhla MLA said they also demanded that a road in the Taimoor Nagar area should be named after the victim. Kumar was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified men in front of his minor son and a nephew while he was watching them play. In the CCTV footage, Kumar was seen in the street when two men walk past him and one of them pumps a bullet in his chest.

Police conduct raids in UP, fail to nab BSP leader's son

Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police teams raided several places Wednesday but failed to trace Ashish Pandey, a politician's son who is on the run after brandishing a gun at a five-star hotel in New Delhi. Raids have been carried out at various places associated with Ashish Pandey and we will be able to make the arrest soon, the state's Additional Director General (Law and Order) Anand Kumar said. The police are looking for Pandey after a video clip surfaced on social media, showing him in confrontation with two other guests in the foyer of Delhi's Hyatt Regency Hotel on Saturday night. The Delhi Police has obtained a non-bailable warrant against him and also issued a show-cause notice to the hotel for alleged negligence. Three killed, as many injured in road mishap in Kota

Three persons were killed and as many injured after a collision between their car and an SUV collided with each other in Rajasthan's Kota district, police said Wednesday. The incident took place late in the evening Tuesday, they said, adding that among the dead are the car driver and a grandfathergrandson duo. The deceased were identified as Suresh Sharma, 62, his 10-month-old grandson Tanshu, and car diver Deepak Sharma, 27 -- all residents of Kota city, Deoli-Manji police station SHO Amar Nath said. Barring the driver, the occupants of the car were all from the same family. Army soldier picked up from Meerut for suspected spying

An Indian Army soldier has been picked up from Meerut for questioning on suspicion he provided sensitive information to Pakistan-based intelligence operatives through social media, a defence spokesperson said Wednesday. The soldier, whose identity has not been revealed is associated with the Signal Regiment in Meerut, the spokesperson said in Lucknow. He is said to have been posted with the regiment for two years. An investigation is under progress by Army Intelligence authorities, the official said. The jawan is being questioned about whether any confidential information related to the Western Command has been leaked through social media, another defence official said. In a similar case earlier this month, a BrahMos Aerospace engineer was arrested in Nagpur on charges of spying. Egyptian ex-lawmaker goes missing, may have been detained

The wife of a former Egyptian lawmaker says he went missing nearly three weeks ago and may have been detained by security forces. Shaymaa Afifi says Mustafa el-Nagar went missing on Sept. 27 while travelling to the southern city of Aswan. She has sent a request to prosecutors asking for information about his whereabouts. She says an unknown person informed her by telephone last week that police arrested her husband but gave her no further details. An appeals court on Monday upheld el-Nagar's conviction and three-year prison sentence for insulting the judiciary. He had been out on appeal. Egypt's Interior Ministry did not respond to requests for comment. Rights groups say Egypt has forcibly disappeared people in recent years as part of a wide-ranging crackdown on dissent.

Man kills friend's ex-lover to avenge his death, held: Police

A 21-year-old medical student was allegedly killed by the friend of her former lover at her residence in Maharashtra's Latur district Tuesday, the police said Wednesday. The accused Amar Shinde (21) allegedly slit the throat of the victim Apurva Yadav to avenge the suicide committed by his friend Sarthak Jadhav earlier this year, a police official said when asked about the motive behind the crime. Shinde has been arrested and booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Jadhav had committed suicide in Osmanabad neighbouring Latur, over 480 kms away from Mumbai, allegedly after Yadav ended her relationship with him, he said. Yadav and her current boyfriend were booked by the police on the charge of abetment to suicide, the official said, adding that she was out on bail. 3 Sangrur jail officers shifted, 1 suspended after video shot by inmates goes viral

Three prison officers have been transferred while a warden of the Sangrur jail in Punjab suspended for "dereliction of duty" after a video allegedly shot by the inmates went viral on the social media, officials said Wednesday. The action came after a purported video of seven prisoners, shot by them using mobile phones illegally smuggled into jails, surfaced. In the video, the inmates accused the jail officers of seeking bribe from them. Child injured as Radio Jockeys throw CDs in garba crowd

A 4-year-old boy was injured when Radio Jockeys (RJs) of an FM radio station allegedly threw CDs of a music album in a crowd of revellers at a garba dance event here, police said. A case under section 337 of the Indian Penal Code (causing hurt through a rash or negligent act) was registered at Vastrapur police station against five RJs of 93.5 Red FM, an official said Wednesday. 'Sudden provocation' led to firing at judge's wife, son: Police

Four days after a security guard killed the wife and injured the son of a judge, the police said the shooting at a busy market here was the result of a sudden provocation. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sumit Kuhar said the personal security officer (PSO) Mahipal lost his temper when the judge's wife and son scolded him on Saturday for being untraceable after they had finished their shopping. The DCP said the murder followed this "sudden provocation". Mahipal allegedly shot at additional district and sessions judge Krishan Kant's wife Ritu and 18-year-old son Dhruv. While the judge's wife died later in hospital, his son is on life support. "The mother and son had asked Mahipal to wait near the car until they came back.
