Judge's wife, son shot at by his security guard in busy Gurgaon market; 'critical'

The wife and teenage son of a judge were allegedly shot at by his personal security staff in a crowded market area in sector-49 here Saturday, police said. DCP-East Sulochna Gajraj said the two have been rushed a hospital in the city where they are in "critical" condition. Police said the incident occurred around 3.30 pm when Additional Sessions Judge Krishan Kant's wife Ritu and son Dhruv had gone for shopping in the Arcadia market. They were accompanied by the judge's guard, Mahipal. "Some locals informed the police about gunshots being fired outside the Arcadia market. When a police team reached the spot, they found Ritu and Dhruv lying in a pool of blood," Gajraj said. She said Ritu has suffered bullet injury in her chest, while Dhruv in his head. HC hikes compensation to dentist who lost his arm in accident

The Madras High Court has enhanced the compensation awarded by a tribunal to a dentist, who lost his arm in an accident in 2009, from Rs 67.99 lakh to Rs 82.60 lakh. Dismissing an appeal by the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) against the order of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal in 2013, a division bench, comprising justices C T Selvam and M V Muralidharan, awarded the increased compensation to Dr Saravana Ruban. Ruban submitted that he met with the accident in 2009 when an SETC bus knocked him down while he was riding a bike from Puducherry to Marakkanam and was hospitalised. Alleging that the bus was being driven in a rash and negligent manner, he moved the tribunal, claiming Rs 1 crore as compensation from the SETC,taking into account that he was employed as junior resident at the JIPMER, Puducherry, drawing a monthly salary of Rs 35,047 at the time of the accident. Main accused in BJP leader's murder held in Bhojpur

The main accused in the murder of former Bihar BJP vice-president Visheshwar Ojha and the prime witness Kamal Kishore Mishra was arrested Saturday from Bhojpur district in the state, police said. The accused Brajesh Mishra, considered a terror in the riverine areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, carries a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, the police said. He was arrested from Sonvarsha village in the district following a tip off while he was hatching a conspiracy to execute some other crime and seized a pistol from him, district superintendent of police Aditya Kumar said. Police also seized a pistol from the possession of Brajesh Mishra who is he said. Ojha was gunned down by masked assailants in Bhojpur district in February 2016. The prime witness to the crime, Kamal Kishore Mishra was killed on September 28, 2018 by miscreants at Sonvarsha village.

SVO files charge sheet against executive engineer in DA case

The Jammu branch of State Vigilance Organization (SVO) Saturday filed charge sheet against an executive engineer for possessing assets disproportionate to his known source of income. The SVO had registered a case under various section of prevention of corruption act at police station vigilance organisation Jammu against the accused officer. "After scrutinizing the records and fulfilling all the legal formalities, charge sheet has been filed by the SVO against the accused before the court of special judge anti-corruption, Jammu, for legal determination," a spokesman for the SVO said. Petition filed in Pak court seeking death for killer of minor girl

A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court on Saturday seeking the death penalty for a killer of a minor girl in Punjab province of Pakistan. The anti-terrorism court here on Friday issued death warrants for Imran Ali, 23, to be hanged on October 17 in central jail in Lahore. In January, police arrested Ali two weeks after he allegedly raped and killed a seven-year-old girl and threw her body into a garbage dump in the city of Kasur, some 50 kms from Lahore. The murder drew nationwide outrage and condemnation, and triggered violent protests that claimed two lives. A local trader was allegedly duped to the tune of Rs 4 lakh by a man, who offered to give him distributorship of a leading Ayurved products company through a fake website, police said Saturday. Man gets 18-year jail term for raping minor

A Champai district court has sentenced a man to 18 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl three years ago. Special judge R Vanlalena convicted Lalventhanga of Biate village in Champai district, which borders Myanmar, under the POCSO Act and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him on Thursday. Lalventhanga, on February 26, 2015, had lured the girl with some sweets into his house and raped her in his bedroom. The police arrested the accused and registered a case against him under the POCSO Act.

Wife, paramour held for killing man in Shahjahanpur

A woman and her lover were arrested for allegedly killing the former's husband and burying the body in her home here, police said Saturday. Superintendent of Police S Channapa said about three months ago Sunita, a resident of Shamsherpur village, lodged a missing person complaint at Kaant Police Station regarding the disappearance of her husband Suraj Singh, 25. "We (Kaant Police) got information that the missing person was killed by his wife and the body was buried in the house itself. Sunita was in an affair with Hariom, who is from the same village. Suraj was against the relationship. Sunita and Hariom murdered Suraj, his body was found buried in the house," the SP said. Dalit girl gang-rape: Police interrogates several suspects

Following the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 17-year-old Dalit girl, the police has taken several suspects into custody for questioning, officials said on Saturday. The minor girl was gangraped by three men in Lank village in Shamli district of the state on Wednesday. The accused then murdered the victim by hanging her from a ceiling. Man stabs friend to death following argument over Rs 10 in UP

An argument over Rs 10 resulted in a hair saloon owner stabbing his friend to death using a pair of scissors here, police said Saturday. Police said the incident took place on Friday evening, when Prempal Gangwar (42) went to his friend's Ahibaran Lal's saloon for a hair cut. They had an argument over Rs 10. Initially, people perceived it as a friendly fight between both of them, as they knew each other for the last 20 years, they said. But, moments later Prempal slapped Ahibaran, after which Ahibaran stabbed Prempal's chest with a pair of scissors. Prempal was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Ahibaran also attacked sons of Prempal (Lakhan and Vipin) who came to their father's rescue, and subsequently fled from the spot. Station officer of Bhuta police station, Surendra Kumar Singh said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered against Ahibaran. Woman, lover get life term for killing husband in UP

A local court sentenced a woman and her lover to life imprisonment for killing her husband here after her opposed their relationship. Additional District Sessions judge Ravinder Kumar Friday evening imposed a fine of Rs 7000 each on Raheesa and her lover, Rizwan, after holding them guilty under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence). He sentenced them to life imprisonment. According to the prosecution, on June 15, 2010, the two accused killed her husband, Shahnawaz, who was a shopkeeper, after he opposed their affair. Shahnawaz's brother Islam had lodged a police complaint in the case following which an FIR was registered.
