A deputy sarpanch of a village in Goa has moved the Bombay High Court seeking quashing of an FIR filed against him based on a complaint of molestation lodged by a woman Shiv Sena leader in the state. Abhijit Desai, deputy sarpanch of Netravali village of Sanguem taluka of South Goa, filed a petition in the High Court of Bombay at Goa earlier this week, in which he challenged the FIR filed against him by the Crime Branch. In his affidavit filed before the HC, Desai said the woman had lodged a complaint against him accusing him of putting a defamatory post on Facebook. In his affidavit filed in the HC, Desai said, "The complaint bears no date. Ganja weighing around 100 kg and meant to be smuggled to Nellore was seized in the district and one person arrested in this connection, police said Saturday. Acting on a tip-off Friday evening, police carried out vehicle checks and intercepted a car in which they found the narcotic substance valued at Rs 10 lakh, they said. A police officer lost his life during a gun battle with criminals on late Friday night in a border area of Khagaria district of Bihar.The deceased cop has been identified as Pasaraha Station House officer (SHO), Ashish Kumar Singh. Kumar was taken to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.A criminal from notorious Dinesh Muni gang has also been arrested by the police. A class nine student named Supriya Sharma died in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi after returning from Beti Bachao Beti Padhao function, organised on the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child.The health condition of the girl deteriorated as soon as she returned home from the event. The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Chief Justices to High Courts of Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Guwahati, Calcutta, and Bombay.The resolution of recommending Chief Justices to five High Courts was passed by the Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph on October 9.Justice NH Patil, the senior-most judge and also the acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, has been recommended for the appointment as Chief Justice, the post which has been lying vacant since December 2017."It is made clear that the Collegium while making the recommendation is conscious of the fact that Justice N.H. Patil hails from Bombay High Court and is due to retire in April 2019. American pastor Andrew Brunson has left Turkey following a court ruling that convicted him on terror charges but also set him free, according to the Turkish media. The evangelical pastor from North Carolina and his wife Norine arrived at a private terminal in Adnan Menderes Airport in the coastal Izmir province late Friday. Turkish media later said Brunson's plane took off. His route back to the United States has not been confirmed. The Turkish court lifted Brunson's house arrest and ban on travel Friday after sentencing him to three years, one month and 15 days in prison. A 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death allegedly by his friend's brother following a quarrel in Northwest Delhi's Sangam Park on Friday, police said. The police were informed about the incident in the evening following which they rushed to the spot, they said. During investigation, it was found that the younger brother of Anurag (25), who died under suspicious circumstances, picked up a quarrel with his brother's friend Sahil after he brought his body to his residence in Sangam Park, a senior police officer said. Seeing the body of Anurag, his brother Cheenu questioned Sahil and his family over the mysterious death of his brother. Enraged over this, Cheenu thrashed Sahil and stabbed him on his chest following which he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. A case has been registered and police is probing the matter.
A seven-year-old boy was kidnapped allegedly by a neighbour in outer Delhi's Nangloi area after his father refused to lend the accused Rs 5,000, police said Friday. Within 72 hours, the accused identified as Raj Kumar (24) was arrested and the child was rescued and handed over to the family, they said. Based on a missing complaint filed by the father on Monday, a case was registered, they said. During investigation, police examined CCTV footage of the complainant's area and found that the child was taken away by their neighbour on his motorcycle, a senior police officer said. Police arrested him from Ferozabad in Uttar Pradesh and the child was rescued, he said.

A case of alleged extortion has been registered against Yogesh Tilekar, a BJP MLA from Pune, and two others, police said Friday. Tilekar, his brother Chetan and his associate Ganesh Kamthe were booked under IPC section 385 (extortion) for allegedly demanding Rs 50 lakh from a private firm to allow it to lay optical fibre cables for internet, police said. The FIR was registered on the complaint from E-Vision Tele-Infra which lays optical fibre lines for Internet for private companies in the city, said joint commissioner of police Shivaji Bodkhe. "Tilekar, his brother and Kamthe allegedly demanded money from the firm officials to allow them to continue the work in an area in Hadapsar (which is Tilekar's constituency)," he said.
