Police raids illegal arms manufacturing factory, 3 arrested

The police raided an illegal arms manufacturing factory in West Bengal's Hooghly district and arrested three person Friday, a senior police officer said. The police raided the factory at Rather Sarak in Chandernagore and seized 300 cartridges, drill machines, seven unfinished magazines and a 7 mm gun, Ajay Kumar, Commissioner of Chandernagore Police Commisionerate said. Three persons have been arrested in this connection, the commissioner said.

Kiri Industries, 2 promoters settle case with Sebi

Chemicals firm Kiri Industries and its two promoters have settled a case related to alleged disclosure lapses with markets regulator Sebi after paying nearly Rs 11 lakh towards the settlement. The promoters are Manish Kiri and Anupama M Kiri. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had initiated adjudication proceedings against the three entities for allegedly violating disclosure norms under its regulations, including PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) and SAST (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeover). The firm and promoters had submitted applications with the regulator for settlement of the case, Sebi said in three separate orders. The settlement terms as proposed by the three entities were considered by the regulator's High Powered Advisory Committee, which recommended the case for settlement on payment of Rs 5.90 lakh by Anupama M Kiri, Rs 2 lakh by Manish Kiri and Rs 2.89 lakh by Kiri Industries. Illegal encroachments on Hindus' properties in Pak: Chief Justice takes cognizance

Pakistan's Chief Justice Saqib Nisar has taken cognizance of alleged illegal encroachments of the properties of Hindus after a protesting woman professor appealed to him, saying the minority community was facing the "worst lawlessness and mismanagement" in the country. Justice Nisar, known for his judicial activism, issued notices to federal and Sindh provincial authorities after watching a video message by retired professor Dr Bhagwan Devi. His office said that he has decided to take up her plea and fixed October 18 for the hearing. The court issued notices to the attorney general for Pakistan, advocate general of Sindh, secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, secretary of human rights, Sindh chief secretary, secretary of Minority Affairs Department, Sindh government and the Larakna district commissioner. I-T notice: Maran moves HC against single-judge order

The Madras High Court Friday restrained the Income Tax department till October 22 from proceeding further on the re-assessment of former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran's income for 2008-09 and 2009-10, based on the CBI chargesheet in the Aircel-Maxis deal case. A division bench of justices G Huluvadi Ramesh and K Kalyana Sundaram gave the oral direction when an appeal filed by Maran, challenging the October 10 order of a single judge dismissing his petition filed against the I-T action, came up for hearing. It then posted the appeal for further hearing to October 22. In his order, Justice S M Subramaniam had said the petitioner, who held the high position of a Union minister, was duty bound to respond to the department's notice to prove his innocence or otherwise. Pak SC unhappy with accountability court's delay in concluding graft cases against Sharif family

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday rapped the accountability court for its delay to complete the trial of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in corruption cases and gave a final extension to it to conclude the hearings by November 17. Three cases were launched against the Sharif family in September 2017 following his disqualification on July 28 the same year. The Supreme Court had initially given a six-month deadline to the accountability court in Islamabad to wrap up the cases but subsequently extended the period on the demand of the trial court. So far only one case was decided on July 6, whereas the trial in two cases are still on. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Friday heard the extension plea of the accountability court judge, Justice Muhammad Arshad Malik. Man shot dead in Mumbai's Dadar area

A 35-year-old man was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in Dadar in central Mumbai Friday morning, police said. The deceased was identified as Manoj Mourya, who worked for an electronic weighing scales firm and lived in Dadar (West), said deputy commissioner of police Manjunath Singe. Mourya was shot from behind on Senapati Bapat Road around 7.30 AM and died during treatment at the civic-run KEM Hospital, the DCP said. The unidentified shooter managed to escape from the spot, the officer added. A case of murder was registered at Dadar police station and investigators are examining CCTV footage of the busy area to identify the assailant, he said.

UP STF arrests three people selling fake tickets of roadways buses

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force Friday arrested three members of a gang for selling fake tickets in connivance with the state roadways buses. The gang was operating in Aligarh, Mathura, Hathras and Sadabad routes, police said. Ashok, Surjeet and Amit were arrested from Iglas area of Aligarh, they said, adding that they confessed to the crime. The three told police that they operated with the help of some officials and employees of the department. The field unit of Agra STF had arrested 11 drivers, conductors and bouncers on August 21. They told police that they used to give photocopy of the actual tickets to the passengers travelling in about 30 buses on Mathura-Aligarh and Agra-Aligarh routes, sources said. Hundreds of relatives, friends and colleagues of slain Bulgaria journalist Viktoria Marinova attended her funeral in her native town of Ruse on Friday, just after German police announced that a suspect has acknowledged attacking her. Mentally disturbed person allegedly kills boy near hospital

An eight-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed to death by a mentally disturbed person near a hospital here on Friday, police said. The 28-year-old man from Haryana was brought here by his family for treatment. Soon after they alighted from the vehicle outside a mental hospital, the man entered a house and killed the boy, Station House Officer at Adarsh Nagar Police Station said. Tripura court grants police transit remand of man held for making derogatory remarks against WB CM

A local court has granted West Bengal Police five-day transit remand of a man arrested for allegedly making derogatory remarks on social media against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The chief judicial magistrate granted the remand Thursday for taking the accused Tushar Sharma to Kolkata from Tripura's Dhalai district. The West Bengal Police had sought his transit remand. A West Bengal Police team arrested Sharma on October 6 for the alleged derogatory remarks against the chief minister, the sub-divisional police officer of Ambassa, Asish Das Gupta, said. Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi Friday said she believes in all the women who have come out with complaints of sexual harassment. She said her ministry will soon propose a committee with senior judicial and legal persons as members to look into all issues emanating from the #MeToo campaign. "I believe in all of them. I believe in the pain and trauma behind every single complainant. "I am proposing to set up a committee with senior judicial and legal persons as members to look into all issues emanating from the #MeToo campaign," she said in an interview to PTI. The committee will look into the legal and institutional framework which is in place for handling complaints of sexual harassment, including some of the complaints if required, and advise the ministry on how to strengthen these, she said.

More suspects detained in Belgium football scandal

Three players' agents, a referee and a former lawyer were charged and detained in Belgium on Friday as a massive football fraud and match-fixing scandal widened. Mogi Bayat, portrayed in the media as Belgium's most powerful sports agent, was charged with "money laundering," his lawyers said, after he appeared before a judge. Bayat was detained pending his next hearing, as were fellow agents Dejan Veljkovic and Karim Mejjati, who were questioned this week as part of the operation targeting Belgium's football elite. Former Anderlecht club lawyer Laurent Denis and referee Bart Vertenten were also charged and arrested overnight, according to the Belga news agency. Guj: Man, woman arrested for killing latter's husband

A man and woman were arrested here for allegedly killing the latter's husband in Gujarat's Rajkot district, police said Friday. Deputy commissioner of police Jaydeepsinh Jadeja identified the accused as Ajay Kumar Patel and Mamta Patel. They were arrested Thursday from Vadodara railway station. Ajay is deceased Sunil Patel's step-brother while Mamta is Sunil's wife, he said. Sunil suspected that Ajay and Mamta were having an affair and the former had confronted the two several times over this, the official said. Ajay and Mamta decided to kill Sunil and allegedly strangulated him on October 3 and disposed of his body in the bushes in Rajkot, the official said. SC seeks response from MP HC registrar on plea by woman judicial officer

The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from the Registrar of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on a plea by a woman judicial officer who had resigned in the wake of inquiry on her complaint of alleged sexual harassment against the sitting judge. The High Court judge was given a clean chit in December 2017 by a Rajya Sabha appointed panel which probed the charges of sexual harassment against him. A Bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan issued notice to the Registrar on her plea in which she also sought restoration of her seniority and back salary. She had resigned from the post of Additional Sesseions Judge in 2014. The Bench sought response to the notice in six weeks.
