Revenue Minister of Punjab Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria Tuesday asked the officials to expeditiously clear all pending cases in the revenue courts. Chairing a department meeting in Chandigarh, the minister ordered a day-to-day hearing of all pending cases which were one to two years old. The department has prepared an annual report of cases pending in the revenue courts right from the naib tehsildar level to the top from June 6, 2017 to June 30, 2018, he said. Stressing on efficiency and zero-pendency, he warned the officials against any act of negligence. The Delhi High Court today asked the CBI to provide digitised records of the trial court proceedings in the 2G spectrum case to former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others whose acquittal in the matter has been challenged by the agency. The same direction was issued by Justice Najmi Waziri in relation to a case arising out of the probe in 2G scam and in which Essar Group promoters Ravi Kant Ruia and Anshuman Ruia and six others were acquitted by the trial court. The court gave the CBI two weeks' time to provide the digitised records and six weeks to Raja and others to file their replies to the agency's appeals and listed the two matters for further hearing on February 7. The Haryana Police Tuesday arrested five persons, including a woman, involved in at least 35 criminal cases, officials said. The accused were identified as Pawan alias Poni, a resident of village Ashrafgarh, Pawan's sister Sunita, Amit alias Mita of Sonipat, Bunty and Rishi, both from Jind, the police said. At least 35 cases of theft registered in various police stations were unearthed with their arrest, they said. During patrolling, a police team noticed a vehicle bearing Delhi registration number parked on link road near village Barsana in Jind district. The team went close to the vehicle and spotted five persons, including a woman, near it. When interrogated, they confessed to carry out a major incident of theft while revealing their identity, they said.

A murder convict undergoing treatment at the government hospital here after an alleged suicide bid in the central prison here, managed to escape Tuesday, police said. They said the 31-year-old Selvaraj, undergoing life sentence in a murder case some three years ago, allegedly cut his wrist and also consumed mosquito repellent three days ago in his cell, reportedly due to differences with his wife. However, he was rescued by cell mates and rushed to the government hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. Selvaraj, hailing from Sankari in Salem district, was found missing from the hospital early Tuesday, police said, adding a manhunt is on for him.
Eight people have been booked in Maharashtra's Nashik district after a man died last week due to snakebite at a bungalow here, police said Tuesday. Police identified the deceased as Vikram Singh Malout (38), a snake-catcher hailing from Punjab. "On October 3, Malout had visited the bungalow of one of the accused, Balu Borade, who illegally maintains poisonous snakes at his residence. Malout was bitten on the finger by a snake and died on October 4," said Prabhakar Rayate, in charge of Upnagar police station in Nashik. Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrikrishna Kokate said it was earlier assumed that Malout died in the jungles of Samangaon near Nashik while catching snakes. "But police have seized mobile phone clips which show Malout and seven others playing with poisonous snakes at Borade's bungalow in Pimpalgaon Khamb area on October 3 when he was bit. A woman, who went missing almost three weeks ago was found in Jammu and Kashmir's Digiana on Tuesday, police said. "Acting on a missing person complaint registered at Ramgarh Police Station in Samba district by a man from Chak Bhambo on September 21, the police began search for the woman," officials said. As per the plaint, the man's wife went missing from their home in Chak Bhambo, officials said. "After strenuous efforts, a police party found the missing woman in Digiana, Jammu," they said. The woman was brought back safely to her home and requisite legal formalities were completed, they added.
BJP MP Udit Raj Tuesday termed the #MeToo movement in India a "wrong practice" and questioned the relevance of making sexual harassment allegations against anybody after 10 years. The #MeToo movement has intensified in the country with more women recounting their experiences of sexual harassment in the entertainment and media industry. Observing that one should go case-by-case, Raj said there are several instances where women did this after taking money and then moved on to the next target. However, he asserted that if someone has exploited a woman, the person should be "shot". A 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her neighbour while she was alone at her home in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said Tuesday. The woman filed a complaint Monday evening, they said, adding the accused has been absconding since then. The woman alleged that her mother was unwell and her brother had taken her to hospital late Sunday evening. Noticing the woman alone, the 30-year-old neighbour entered her home and forcibly raped her, the police said. Hearing her cry, one of her relatives in the neighbourhood rescued her, but the accused managed to fee, Station House Officer at Parola Police Station Banne Singh said. The police have registered a case gainst the accused, the SHO said, adding the victim was sent for medical examination Tuesday.
