6-yr-old girl molested by school teacher in Kolkata

A six-year-old student was allegedly molested by a government school teacher here, following which the accused was arrested, police said Tuesday. The police had a tough time controlling agitated family members of the victim who tried to force their way into the school, located in the southern part of the city, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast division) Kalyan Mukherjee said. According to the DCP, 10 police personnel, including two officers in-charge of Gariahat and Lake police stations, were injured in brickbatting by the protesters. The police had to use batons to disperse the agitators and three people were arrested for attacking the police personnel and destroying public properties, he said. Tamil weekly editor arrested for 'damaging' references to Guv

A well-known editor of a Tamil weekly was arrested Tuesday following a complaint from the Raj Bhavan over a series of articles that allegedly had damaging references to Governor Banwarilal Purohit, official sources said. Senior journalist R Gopal, who heads the magazine Nakkheeran and had written articles on a sex scandal involving a woman college teacher, was picked up by a police team from the airport here when he was on way to Pune, they said. Gopal was arrested under Section 124 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), relating to "assaulting President, Governor etc with intent to compel or restrain the exercise of any lawful power", the sources said. A Singaporean activist and an opposition politician were Tuesday found guilty of contempt of court for seperate Facebook posts criticising the country's judiciary. Social worker and human rights activist Jolovan Wham wrote a Facebook post in April saying that judges in neighbouring Malaysia were more independent than their counterparts in Singapore on cases with political implications. He had made the observation as he commented on a legal challenge filed by a Malaysian online news portal against that country's law against fake news. Singapore's Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) initiated contempt of court proceedings against Wham for scandalising the judiciary. John Tan, a politician with the opposition Singapore Democratic Party, was also charged with contempt after he wrote a Facebook post saying that the AGC's actions against Wham proved that his comments were true. Patna HC dismisses anticipatory bail plea filed by ex-minister Manju Verma

The Patna High Court Tuesday dismissed an anticipatory bail plea filed by former Bihar minister Manju Verma who is facing arrest in an Arms Act case, which cropped up in course of raids conducted by the CBI in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal case. Justice Sudhir Singh turned down the application of Verma, against whom an FIR was lodged in August at Cheria Bariarpur police station of Begusarai district after the seizure of bout 50 cartridges from her in-laws residence. Verma, the second term JD(U) MLA from Cheria Bariarpur in Begusarai district, could not be contacted for comment after the high court did not accept her anticipatory bail request as her mobile phone was switched off. PIL on disclosure of criminal antecedents of candidates withdrawn

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking immediate compliance of the recent judgment by the Supreme Court for advertising criminal antecedents of candidates in the election campaign has been withdrawn by the petitioner after the Delhi High Court refused to pass any direction on it.The court asked petitioner Ashwini Upadhyay to move the appropriate court and observed: "The Election Commission has notified elections. If you think that elections are happening in violation to the Supreme Court guidelines, you go to the Supreme Court. Now elections have been notified, we will not interfere. NGT orders closure of industries in residential areas; slaps Rs 50K fine on Delhi govt

The National Green Tribunal has ordered closure of industrial units running in "non-conforming" residential areas of Rohini and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 each on the Delhi government and others for their "defaults and inaction" towards violation of rules. The green panel said the units causing pollution, including unauthorised car workshops in violation of law, must be stopped immediately, and a report of action taken may be submitted before the tribunal within one month. "Respondents are held liable to pay environmental compensation of Rs 50,000 each for damage to the environment by their persistent defaults and inaction towards violations of rules and directions issued by the Tribunal. "This amount should be recovered from the heads of the said respondents personally to be deposited with the Central Pollution Control Board within one month," the bench said. Body of 25-yr-old man found floating in pond

The body of a 25-year-old man was found floating in a pond in southwest Delhi, police said Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Balwant Ram, a native of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand. The body was first noticed by a sweeper who immediately informed the police. During investigation, it was revealed that Ram used to work in a canteen at the Golf Course, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Devender Arya. On Monday, he left the canteen at around 10 pm but did not reach his house in Sagarpur, the DCP said. Ram's body was later fished out from the pond, Arya said, adding that no injury mark was found on the body. A case was registered in the matter, he added.

Nepalese held with heroin near Indo-Nepal border

A Nepalese national was arrested with narcotics from Sonauli area on the Indo-Nepal border here, police said Tuesday. Tribhuvan Thapa (31), who was on his way to Nepal, was arrested Monday night during a routine checking at Shyamkot village near the Indo-Nepal border, and 48 gm of heroin was seized from his possession, they said. The seized contraband is stated to be worth Rs 48 lakh. The accused was booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

BJP worker found dead at home in Maharashtra

A 38-year-old woman activist of the BJP was found dead Tuesday at her residence in the neighbouring Palghar district, a police official said. Some neighbours of Rupali Chavan, local leader of the BJP's Mahila Morcha, got suspicious of the foul odour emanating from her house in Nallasopara area, he said. They alerted police officials who broke open the door of Chavan's home and found her dead. She had several injuries and burn wounds, the official said. "We suspect that Chavan was killed by an unidentified person two days back," he said, adding that the exact cause of her death would be known after the postmortem. "We have registered an offence of murder and further investigation is on," he added.

Illegal mining in Satluj: NGT asks petitioner to approach monitoring committee

The National Green Tribunal has directed a petitioner, alleging illegal mining activities in Satluj river basin in Himachal Pradesh, to approach a monitoring committee on the issue. A bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore said a larger bench of the tribunal has already constituted a committee with detailed terms of reference which includes illegal mining activities in the Satluj river. "Therefore, we direct the applicant to appear before the committee and participate in their meeting for his redressal," the bench said. The committee was formed by the tribunal on July 24 which comprised noted environmental activist Balbir Singh Seechewal, representatives of the central and state pollution control boards. Goa MLA son's car mows down 18-year-old woman

An 18-year-old woman was killed and her sister seriously injured when they were knocked down by a car allegedly driven by a Goa MLA's son here, triggering violence in the area, police said Tuesday. The accident occurred Monday evening on the NH-4, they said. The speeding luxury car driven by Cail Glen Souza Ticlo (27), son of Goa lawmaker Glen Ticlo, mowed down the two women while they were crossing the highway near the fruit market, police commissioner D C Rajappa said. Cail was arrested but released on bail Tuesday. The victim identified as Tainiyat Wahid Bisti succumbed to injuries while Samrin Khalid Bisti admitted to a hospital, he said. An angry crowd from the surrounding area pelted stones at the car, damaging glass panes and tried to set it on fire, but the police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation, Rajappa said. Seven people were also arrested for allegedly trying to set the car ablaze, he said.

A man was arrested in Tripura's Dhalai district for allegedly making derogatory remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in social media, a police officer said Tuesday. A West Bengal Police team arrested Tushar Sharma of Kulai area in Dhalai district on October 6 for the alleged derogatory remarks against Banerjee, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Ambassa, Asish Das Gupta said Sharma was produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Ambassa. The West Bengal Police sought his transit remand. However, the CJM rejected the request of the West Bengal Police as the arrested person was sick and ordered for his admission in a hospital. The CJM ordered that the accused be produced before it on Wednesday. A West Bengal Police team camping in Tripura said it will again appeal for the transit remand of Sharma in the court on Wednesday.

2 arrested after crude bomb goes off in Mumbai shanty

Two persons including a minor were arrested in Mumbai's Antop Hill area after a crude bomb they were assembling went off, a Crime Branch official said Tuesday. The bomb, packed in a tin box, contained potassium nitrate obtained from four "sutli" (twine) firecrackers with glass pieces and nails added to it, the official said. The bomb went off on Sunday in the shanty in which the two accused were staying in Noora Bazar locality of Antop Hill's Bangalpura area, alerting neighbours and subsequently the police, the official said. Police identified the two accused as Azrul Sheikh (22) and a minor, both daily wage workers hailing from West Bengal. "The two accused made a bomb from potassium nitrate powder obtained from four sutli bombs. They added glass pieces and nails to it.
