Thai Police arrest 1 person in Bangkok shooting

One person has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a deadly shootout between two rival gangs here in the Thai capital in which an Indian tourist and a man from Laos were killed, a media report said Tuesday. Gakhrejr Dheeraj, 42, and a tourist from Laos died in the shooting which took place on Sunday on a bustling street in Bangkok's Ratchathewi district. Preecha Sakudompaisan, 28, turned himself in Monday night, and authorities are seeking the arrests of at least five more suspects, according to Bangkok police chief Sutthiphong Wongpin. "I believe the perpetrators will continue to surrender," Sutthipong was quoted as saying by Bangkok-based news website 'Khaosod English'. Patna HC rejects bail plea of former minister Manju Verma

The Patna High Court Tuesday dismissed an anticipatory bail plea filed by former Bihar minister Manju Verma who is facing arrest in an Arms Act case. Justice Sudhir Singh turned down the application of Verma, against whom an FIR was lodged in August at Cheria Bariarpur police station of Begusarai district after the seizure of about 50 cartridges from her residence. The seizure was made during a raid conducted at Vermas Patna and Begusarai residences by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal. Verma had stepped down as the Social Welfare minister following reports alleging close links between her husband Chandrashekhar Verma and Brajesh Thakur, the prime accused in the scandal. She had moved the high court after her anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a Begusarai court on August 25.

Tamil weekly editor arrested in Chennai

A well-known editor of a Tamil weekly was Tuesday arrested here while on his way to Pune, airport officials said. Senior journalist R Gopal, who heads the vernacular 'Nakkheeran', was picked up by a police team from the airport, they said. The weekly's website claimed Gopal was arrested based on a complaint from the Raj Bhavan over a write-up on Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor of a private college in Virudhunagar who had been arrested for allegedly prodding girl students to extend sexual favours to officials. There was no immediate confirmation from police officials on the reason behind Gopal's arrest, even as officials in Raj Bhavan could not be reached for a comment.

Man held for molesting 5-yr-old girl in park

A 52-year-old man was arrested for allegedly molesting a five-year-old girl at a public park here in Maharashtra, police said Tuesday. Jagdish Ramlakhan Rai, a truck driver, went to the park in the Wagle Estate area last Thursday and lured the girl who was playing there on some pretext. He took the child to a corner in the park where he allegedly molested her, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. A man who was near the spot recorded the alleged incident on his mobile phone and submitted the footage to the Shree Nagar police, she said. After analysing the video recording, the police traced the victim, called her parents to the police station and registered a case against the accused on Monday, she said. In the meantime, some local activists of a political party traced the accused and beat him up. Man arrested for bag lifting

A 20-year-old man was arrested allegedly for bag lifting in West Delhi's Madipur, police said Monday. The stolen bag which contained 15 wrist watches and three hair smoothers was recovered from his possession, they said. On Saturday, one Mukesh Kumar reported that during daytime, he had come to B Block Market, Madipur on his scooter. When he returned after shopping, he found his bag missing from the scooter, a senior police officer said, adding that the bag contained 30 wrist watches, three hair smoothers. Police spotted a person with the stolen bag in one of the CCTV footages. The accused was later identified as Ankush and arrested, he said. During interrogation, Ankush disclosed that he used to commit thefts and sell the stolen items to people residing in the nearby areas.

Five arrested for robbery in Delhi's Mahendra Park

Five men were arrested for allegedly robbing a person of Rs 1,55,000 in north-west Delhi's Mahendra Park, police said Monday. The accused were identified as Bablu Sheikh (23), Salim (19), Naveen Dutt alias Akash (23), Harish alias Piddu (34) and Rohit alias Shanky (31). On September 24, one Sanjay Kumar Shah, who works as a Munim at Azad Pur Sabzi Mandi, was returning home on scooty along with one Vivek Yadav from Aloo Mandi who carried a bag containing Rs 1,55,000 in cash, a police officer said. When they reached near gate number 1, three boys came from behind and attacked their head with an iron rod. They fell down on the road and the accused robbed the bag and fled, the officer added. On the basis of secret information, the accused persons were arrested. They disclosed their involvement in four more cases, police said. Two bikes and a scooty were recovered from their possession, he added.

Three security guards, other arrested as 'jailbreak' plan foiled

Four persons, including three security guards deputed at Chaibasa divisional jail in West Singhbhum district were arrested allegedly for planning to execute jailbreak to free a hardcore Naxal, police said Monday. The Naxal has been languishing in the jail and the accused wanted him to flee the prison sometime during coming Durga Puja, a senior police officer said. Former BJD MLA held for assaulting woman, mother

A former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA was arrested on Monday on charges of assaulting a woman and her mother in Kandhamal district, police said here. Devendra Kanhar was arrested from Andhra Pradesh on the basis of an FIR lodged by the woman at Phulbani Sadar police station on September 2, Superintendent of Police of Kandhamal, Prateek Singh, said. When produced before a court here, the former Phulbani MLA was remanded to 14 days judicial custody. Kanhar, however, denied the allegation and claimed that he had surrendered and was not absconding. In the FIR, the woman accused Kanhar of physically assaulting her and her mother at Goudasahi in Phulbani town, Singh said. The incident could have happened owing to some personal rivalry, the police officer said. A sex video purportedly featuring Kanhar had also gone viral on social media around the same time, making the entire episode more controversial.

CBI takes over probe into police firing during anti-Sterlite protest

The CBI has taken over the probe into the police firing in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu on May 22 and 23 during the anti-Sterlite protests that claimed 13 lives, officials said Monday. Acting on a batch of petitions related to the police firing, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had on August 14 asked the premier investigative agency to probe the incident.
