Hawaii settles climate change lawsuit from youths: All you need to know

About two years after 13 children and teens sued Hawaii over the threat posed by climate change, both sides reached a settlement that includes an ambitious requirement to decarbonize the state's transportation system over the next 21 years. It's another example of a younger generation channeling their frustration with the government's response to the climate crisis into a legal battle. Navahine v. Hawaii Department of Transportation is the world's first youth-led constitutional climate case addressing climate pollution from the transportation sector, according to statements from both sides. The lawsuit said one plaintiff, a 14-year-old Native Hawaiian, was from a family that farmed taro for more than 10 generations. However, extreme droughts and heavy rains caused by climate change have reduced crop yields and threatened her ability to continue the cultural practice. The complaint said rising sea levels also threaten to put their lands underwater. Another plaintiff lost her home .

Trump ends pre-sentencing interview after less than 30 mins of questioning

Donald Trump's mandatory pre-sentencing interview Monday ended after less than a half-hour of routine and uneventful questions and answers, a person familiar with the matter told the Associated Press. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and did so on condition of anonymity. The former president was quizzed by a New York City probation officer for a report that will be compiled and presented to trial judge Juan M. Merchan prior to Trump's July 11 sentencing in his hush money criminal case. Merchan can use the report to help decide Trump's punishment following his May 30 felony conviction for falsifying business records to cover up a potential sex scandal. The judge has discretion to impose a wide range of punishments, ranging from probation and community service to up to four years in prison. Trump, who declined to testify at the trial, appeared for the probation interview Monday by video conference from his residence at the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, with hi

Trump's lawyer says was 'shocked' ex-Prez took verdict with 'solemness'

Donald Trump's lawyer told The Associated Press he was surprised at Trump's stoic demeanour as he listened to the verdict that made him the first former US president convicted of a crime. Todd Blanche was sitting to Trump's left in the Manhattan courtroom as the verdict was read the jury foreman repeating the word guilty 34 times. "I was shocked at how he took the verdict," Blanche said. "He just stood there and just kind of took it. And I think had a lot of appropriate solemnness for the moment that made me very proud to be sitting next to him when it, when it was happening," said Blanche, adding that he thought Trump was still handling himself well on Friday, the day after the verdict, even as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee railed that the trial was unfair. He's not happy about it, but there's no defendant in the history of our justice system who's happy about a conviction the day after. But I think he knows there's a lot of fight left and there's a lot of ...

Trump's NY case was 1st of 4 to go to trial, could be last one for a while

The hush money case that culminated in a conviction of Donald Trump this week was the first of four criminal prosecutions brought against the former president and likely the only one to reach trial before the November elections. Where there was once speculation among political pundits and legal observers about how the judicial system and election-year calendar could juggle four separate trials, the other three have been snarled in different ways and for different reasons. These delays make additional courtroom reckonings this year uncertain at best. The fate of the other cases matters for historical and political reasons but practical ones, too: Now that Trump has a criminal record in New York, he would be at risk of a harsher sentence in the event he's convicted in any subsequent prosecution. A look at where the other cases stand: Election interference case in Washington The federal case charging Trump with conspiring to overturn the 2020 presidential election, one of two brough

Biden asks Trump to respect justice system after he calls trial 'rigged'

US President Joe Biden on Friday called on his predecessor Donald Trump to respect the justice system and not to show reckless and dangerous behaviour on the verdict of a jury that found him guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Donald Trump was given every opportunity to defend himself it was heard by a jury of 12 citizens, 12 Americans tell people like you and millions of Americans who serve on juries. This jury has chosen the same way every jury in America has chosen. After careful deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous verdict. They found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 felony charges. Now he has been given the opportunity and he should appeal that decision just like everyone else has an opportunity. That's how the American system of justice works, Biden said. In his first public remarks after Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records, Biden slammed Trump for his comments on the jury's decision and claiming that the trial was rigged. Witness who angered judge in Trump's hush money trial will return to stand

A defence witness in Donald Trump's hush money case whom the judge threatened to remove from the trial over his behaviour will return to the stand on Tuesday as the trial nears its end. Trump's lawyers are hoping Robert Costello's testimony will help undermine the credibility of a key prosecution witness, Trump fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen. But Costello angered Judge Juan Merchan on Monday by making comments under his breath, rolling his eyes and calling the whole exercise ridiculous", prompting the judge to briefly kick reporters out of the courtroom to admonish him. The judge told Costello, a former federal prosecutor, he was being contemptuous", adding, If you try to stare me down one more time, I will remove you from the stand", according to a court transcript. Costello didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday from The Associated Press. The chaotic scene unfolded after prosecutors rested their case accusing Trump of falsifying business records as part of

Cohen gives insider details at trial as Trump's attorney accuses him

It wasn't until after a decade in the fold, after his family pleaded with him, after the FBI raided his office, apartment and hotel room, Michael Cohen testified Tuesday, that he finally decided to turn on Donald Trump. The complicated break led to a 2018 guilty plea to federal charges involving a payment to the porn actor Stormy Daniels to bury her story of an alleged sexual encounter with Trump and to other, unrelated crimes. And it's that insider knowledge of shady deals that pushed Manhattan prosecutors to make Cohen the star witness in their case against Trump about that same payment, which they say was an illegal effort to influence the 2016 presidential election. To keep the loyalty and to do the things that he had asked me to do, I violated my moral compass, and I suffered the penalty, as has my family, Cohen testified Tuesday. But defence attorneys sought to portray Cohen as motivated by vengeance on his former boss, confronting him on the witness stand with his own profan

J&J subsidiary proposes paying $6.48 bn over 25 yrs to settle talc lawsuits

A subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson is now proposing paying approximately USD 6.48 billion over 25 years as part of a settlement to cover allegations that its baby powder containing talc caused ovarian cancer. The lawsuits filed against JandJ had alleged its talcum powder caused users to develop ovarian cancer, through use for feminine hygiene, or mesothelioma, a cancer that strikes the lungs and other organs. JandJ said that the reorganization plan for the subsidiary that was being announced on Wednesday was significantly different from the previous reorganization that was announced. Those differences include a three-month solicitation period during which ovarian claimants can vote for or against the plan. This is something that was denied in prior bankruptcy cases, the company said. And if 75 per cent of claimants vote in favor of the plan, a subsidiary may file a prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy to secure its confirmation. The remaining pending personal injury lawsuits that rel

As Trump faces charges over 2 cases, is the hush money case a worthy proxy?

Former President Donald Trump faces serious charges in two separate cases over whether he attempted to subvert the Constitution by overturning the results of a fair election and illegally remain in power. Yet it's a New York case centred on payments to silence an adult film actress that might provide the only legal reckoning this year on whether he tried to undermine a pillar of American democracy. Trump is charged in the so-called hush money case with trying to falsify business records, but it was hard to tell that as the trial opened Monday. Lead prosecutor Matthew Colangelo wasted little time during opening statements tying the case to Trump's campaigning during his first run for the presidency. He said the payments made to Stormy Daniels amounted to "a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election." Whether the jury accepts that connection will be pivotal for Trump's fate. The presumptive nominee faces charges related to falsifying business records that would typica

Catch-and-kill strategy to be described as Trump's hush money trial resumes

A longtime tabloid publisher was expected Tuesday to tell jurors about his efforts to help Donald Trump stifle unflattering stories during the 2016 campaign as testimony resumes in the historic hush money trial of the former president. David Pecker, the former National Enquirer publisher who prosecutors say worked with Trump and Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, on a so-called catch-and-kill strategy to buy up and then spike negative stories during the campaign, testified briefly Monday and will be back on the stand Tuesday in the Manhattan trial. Also Tuesday, prosecutors are expected to tell a judge that Trump should be held in contempt over a series of posts on his Truth Social platform that they say violated an earlier gag order barring him from attacking witnesses in the case. Trump's lawyers deny that he broke the order. Pecker's testimony followed opening statements in which prosecutors alleged that Trump had sought to illegally influence the 2016 race by preventing damaging ...
