England to have six teams in next year's UCL after all-English final in UEL

England will send a record six teams into the Champions League next season, further fueling the wealthy Premier League's financial power over the rest of Europe. Manchester United and Tottenham advanced Thursday to an all-English final of the second-tier Europa League, with the winner of that match earning a place in the next Champions League where the prize money is typically four times greater. Man United and Tottenham's good results in Europe while struggling badly in the Premier League also contributed to English clubs' collectively strong season. Chelsea also advanced Thursday to the final of the third-tier Conference League and will play Real Betis. The weight of money in the Premier League means that even malfunctioning teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham have budgets that are multiples of those of the clubs with which they are competing, said Kieran Maguire, a soccer finance expert from The Price of Football podcast. Premier League teams had weeks ago .

Elon expressed interest in buying soccer club Liverpool, says Errol Musk

Elon Musk's father says his billionaire son has expressed interest in buying English soccer club Liverpool. The Premier League club is privately owned by Fenway Sports Group, which has not indicated it wants to sell but has accepted external investment in the past. Errol Musk, in an interview with Times Radio, acknowledged that the Tesla CEO has an interest in the six-time European Cup champions. Oh yes, but that doesn't mean he's buying it, Errol Musk said. He would like to, yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I. He also said: I can't comment on that. They'll raise the price. In September 2023, FSG sold a minority stake to US investment firm Dynasty Equity. At that time, FSG president Mike Gordon said: "Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever. We have always said that if there is an investment partner that is right for Liverpool then we would pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club's long-term financial resiliency and future growth. Forest narrows point gap with Liverpool after 1-0 victory over Wolves

Nottingham Forest beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 away from home and moved within six points of Premier League leader Liverpool on Monday. First-half goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood and an injury-time third from Taiwo Awoniyi sent Forest to a sixth straight league win. Nuno Esprito Santo's men are tied on points with Arsenal, which is above them on goal difference. The game took place on the 50th anniversary of Brian Clough's appointment at the City Ground and the old maestro would have been thrilled to see his team get off to the perfect start with a goal after six minutes. Former Wolves midfielder Gibbs-White combined on the counterattack with Anthony Elanga before stroking the ball into the bottom corner from 14 meters. Both sides looked to play football and Wolves came into the game. However, Norwegian striker Jrgen Strand Larsen rued missing a couple of clear chances and he was punished two minutes before halftime when Wood doubled the visitor's lead. The big Ne

Liverpool hires Hughes as sporting director to find Klopp's successor

Liverpool's restructuring of its technical staff continued on Wednesday when the club hired Richard Hughes as sporting director starting June 1. Hughes is leaving his role as technical director at Bournemouth to take up the post at Liverpool after previously working with Michael Edwards, who was hired last week as chief executive of football at Fenway Sports Group the US-based conglomerate whose portfolio of sports teams includes Liverpool. Hughes' main task will be identifying a replacement for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said in January that he will be stepping down after nearly nine years as manager. "It is clear to everyone that Jurgen will leave a legacy to build upon," Edwards said," and in Richard we have the right person to make the key decisions and offer the leadership to take us forward into a bright future. "As one very successful chapter will come to a close for Liverpool in the summer, the objective of everyone here is for another one to begin and with Richa

Europa League: Liverpool rout Sparta 11-2 on aggregate to reach last 8

Mohamed Salah scored one goal and set up three to help Liverpool demolish Sparta Prague 6-1 and march into the Europa League quarterfinals. After winning 5-1 the opening leg of their last 16 tie in Prague, Liverpool scored four in the opening 14 minutes at Anfield on Thursday to advance on a massive 11-2 aggregate score. Sparta had no answer to Liverpool's high pressure. Salah seized the ball on the right of the area before shooting inside the far post over Sparta goalkeeper Peter Vindahl for his 20th goal of the season, becoming the first Liverpool player to score at least 20 goals in seven straight seasons. Salah, who injured his hamstring with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations in January, started after having been used as a substitute in both the first leg in Prague and a 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday. Darwin Nunez opened the rout with a clinical low finish seven minutes into the game after scoring two in Prague. A minute later, Salah won the ball on the edge of the

Jota out for months, confirms Klopp; Liverpool's injury crisis deepens

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota will be missing for months because of injury, manager Jurgen Klopp said on Tuesday. The Portugal international hurt his right knee in the first half of Liverpool's 4-1 win at Brentford in the English Premier League on Saturday. We have Diogo with a knee issue ruled out it will obviously take months, Klopp said ahead of Liverpool's home match against Luton on Wednesday. The injury potentially threatens Jota's involvement in the European Championship in Germany starting in June. Liverpool's injury crisis has deepened, with nine senior players unavailable heading into a key period of the season that includes the English League Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday. Klopp didn't give a return date for injured pair Curtis Jones or Alisson Becker and he described Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai as longer term problems. Striker Darwin Nunez was replaced at halftime against Brentford as a precaution.

EPL 2023-24: Klopp to step down as Liverpool manager at end of season

Jurgen Klopp has announced he will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of this season. Klopp has led Liverpool to a Champions League title and Premier League championship in his tenure after being hired in October 2015. He made the shock announcement Friday that he will resign at the end of the season, saying he is running out of energy. I have to. I will leave the club at the end of the season. I can understand that it's a shock for a lot of people in this moment when you hear it for the first time, but obviously, I can explain it or at least try to explain it, Klopp said. I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team. I love the staff. I love everything. That I still take this decision probably shows you that I'm convinced it's the one I have to take. It is that I'm how can I say this? that I'm running out of energy.

EPL 2023-24: Liverpool sign Ryan Gravenberch for $43M from Bayern Munich

Liverpool completed the overhaul of its midfield by signing Netherlands international Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich in a deal worth 40 million euros (USD 43.1 million) on the final day of the summer transfer window. Gravenberch joins fellow midfielders Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo in joining Liverpool this summer while Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have left. The 21-year-old Gravenberch has signed a five-year deal just 12 months after joining Bayern from Ajax. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel was willing to let Gravenberch leave because he didn't fit into the system. "He's a box-to-box midfielder for me, an attacking player," Tuchel said on Friday before the signing was finalised. "The main problem for him is that we don't really have a No. 8 in our 4-2-3-1 system. And we're spoilt for choice up front, with really experienced players. "Ryan is a very nice, hard-working, committed player. He wasn't happy

Premier League: Liverpool's Van Dijk in trouble, may face longer suspension

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk could be handed a longer suspension after being charged by the Football Association on Tuesday for his reaction to being shown a red card against Newcastle in the Premier League over the weekend. The Netherlands center back was sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak in the first half of Liverpool's 2-1 victory at St. James' Park on Sunday. Van Dijk initially refused to leave the field and then remonstrated with referee John Brooks. The sending-off will earn him an automatic one-match ban, to be served against Aston Villa this weekend, but the suspension could be increased. It's alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official," the FA said. Van Dijk has until Friday to respond to the charge.
