Lockheed Martin 'eyeing' IAF deal, plans co-production facility for C-130J

US aerospace major Lockheed Martin on Tuesday said it plans to set up a facility for the co-production of the C-130J Super Hercules heavy-lift military transport aircraft in India that will be the first such global hub outside the United States. With the Indian Air Force (IAF) beginning its hunt to procure up to 80 tactical lift transport aircraft, Lockheed Martin pitched the C-130J plane as the best choice for the force as it has been a "reliable workhorse" in India and over 20 other nations. Robert Toth, the vice president (business development, air mobility and maritime missions) at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, said the IAF's Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme gives the company an opportunity not only to bring capability to India, but also to further its industrial base. "We are continuing to invest ahead of MTA in the C-130Js and posturing ourselves for building aircraft in India," he told PTI in an interview. "In fact, out of all of the opportunities across the world,

Nasa tests quiet supersonic jet, taking one step closer to faster travel

A supersonic jet plane designed to make very little noise took flight for the first time this week, cruising over the southern California desert just after sunrise in what could be the first step toward much faster commercial travel, according to NASA. NASA and the US weapons and aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin successfully tested a jet Tuesday that is capable of travelling faster than the speed of sound. Aircraft have been capable of flying at supersonic speeds since the 1940s. The problem is that ultra fast planes are banned for commercial travel over land because they make an explosive and frightening sonic boom that disturbs the public. The supersonic aircraft Concorde, operated through British Airways and Air France, made transatlantic flights starting in the 1970s. But those were halted in 2003 after a fatal crash three years earlier tanked demand for the expensive service. If NASA and Lockheed Martin can successfully lower the volume, the new jets could slash travel

Two people were killed aboard a vintage plane that crashed and burst into flames near a Southern California airfield during a weekend Father's Day event hosted by an air museum, authorities said Sunday. The Federal Aviation Administration said the twin-engine Lockheed 12A crashed shortly after 12:30 pm Saturday, just west of Chino Airport in San Bernardino County.
