Nitin Gadkari urges new cooperative law to match changing economic needs

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday suggested the Maharashtra government to formulate a new law for the cooperative sector in the state considering the evolving economic conditions. The cooperative sector would play a key role in improving the financial condition of people from rural areas, he said, and urged the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, the apex cooperative bank in the state, to study the socio-economic impact of the cooperative movement in the state. Addressing a public function here, Gadkari said, "It is my request to Maharashtra chief minister and deputy chief minister to come up with a revised act for the cooperative sector. We must find a golden mean between the Cooperative Act and the Companies Act and formulate a new legislation accordingly." LS passes bill for 'Tribhuvan' Sahkari University, Amit Shah defends name

Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed a bill to set up 'Tribhuvan Sahkari University' in Gujarat's Anand with an aim to create a qualified manpower for co-operative societies. The university has been named after Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, who was one of the pioneers of cooperative movement in India and instrumental in laying the foundation of Amul, Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah said during a debate on the "Tribhuvan" Sahkari University Bill, 2025. Shah took a swipe at some opposition members for their demand that the university should have been named after Verghese Kurien, associated with the growth of milk cooperatives in Gujarat, saying that Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel was a Congress leader who gave job to Kurien. GCMMF expects double-digit revenue growth in FY25 on strong Amul demand

Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which sells dairy products under the 'Amul' brand, is expecting double-digit growth in revenue during this fiscal on strong demand, its MD Jayen Mehta said. GCMMF had seen a demand of nearly Rs 60,000 crore last year. GCMMF's turnover increased 8 per cent in the 2023-24 financial year to Rs 59,445 crore. In an interview with PTI, Mehta said the co-operative has witnessed growth in demand across all product categories, including fresh milk, cheese and ice cream, during the first eight months of the current 2024-25 fiscal. "We are expecting a double-digit growth in the turnover," he said when asked about the revenue outlook for the full financial year. Mehta said the GCMMF handled 310 lakh litre of milk per day on average during the last fiscal. It has a total annual milk processing capacity of around 500 lakh litre. Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the Centre has set a target to have a co-operative bank and a milk producers' union in each district of the country and also establish in the next five years multipurpose primary agriculture credit societies (PACS) in two lakh panchayats that have no cooperative institution.
