Mizoram reports 1,402 new Covid-19 cases, positivity rate at 12.1%

Mizoram on Thursday reported 1,402 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 75,470, a Health Department official said. The new cases were detected after testing 11,599 samples in the last 24 hours, registering a positivity rate of 12.10 per cent, he said. Four more people died in the state, pushing the toll to 250, he said. Aizawl registered the highest number of new cases at 779, followed by Siaha (265) and Serchhip (78), he said. At least 242 children were among the newly-infected people, the official said. There are 13,973 active cases in the state at present, while 61,247 people have recovered, including 950 people on Wednesday. The recovery rate is 81.50 per cent. Total 3.36 lakh of the state's over 11 lakh population have received both doses of the COVID vaccines.

Mizoram Govt appoints Olympic-returned Lalremsiami as hockey chief coach

Indian hockey player Lalremsiami, who was part of the women's team which finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, has been appointed as the chief coach, a group A post, under the Mizoram sports and youth services department. The Mizoram government on Thursday offered the Group-A post to Lalremsiami as an appreciation for her performance at the recently-concluded quadrennial event. Lalremsiami, the first female Olympian from Mizoram, was made a chief coach in hockey discipline under the state sports and youth services department, a Group-A post similar to assistant director rank. "Proud to announce that Govt. of Mizoram has approved the appointment of Ms Lalremsiami, National Hockey Player and the only Olympian from #Mizoram at the Tokyo Olympic 2020 to the post of Chief Coach (Hockey) Group-A post under Sports & Youth Services Department," Chief Minister Zoramthanga wrote on his official Twitter handle late Thurday night. Mizoram stares at fuel shortage amid border row, orders rationing

The Mizoram government ordered rationing the purchase of diesel and petrol as the movement of vehicles, including the tankers carrying fuel, continued to remain shut on National Highway-306. The order issued by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department on Friday said that the state could face a huge crisis of fuel, which comes via neighbouring Assam, due to the inter-state border dispute. "All filling stations are instructed not to issue petrol and diesel beyond the permitted quantities. Only those vehicles that go to filling stations will be issued oil," the order said. The quantity of fuel that can be purchased at a time by heavy motor vehicles such as six, eight and twelve wheelers is capped at 50 litres, and 20 litres for medium motor vehicles like pick-up trucks. Maximum three litres of oil is allowed for scooters, five litres for other two-wheelers, and 10 litres for cars, the order said.
