Tamil Nadu unveils Shipbuilding Policy 2026 to boost green tech

In a definitive push toward environmental stewardship in the maritime sector, the Tamil Nadu government has placed green shipbuilding and circular economy practices at the forefront of its newly unveiled Shipbuilding Policy 2026. The policy aims to establish the state as a global leader in sustainable maritime technology, focusing on zero-emission vessels and world-class green recycling facilities. Released by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday, the policy provides specialised incentives for the construction of "green vessels," including those powered by green hydrogen, ammonia, and electric propulsion. These initiatives are designed to align with India's Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which targets a significant reduction in carbon emissions across the shipping fleet. A key highlight of the policy is the promotion of Green Ship Recycling clusters. To discourage hazardous dismantling practices, the state has announced a 15 per cent capital subsidy for the first fiv

TN CM announces special fund of ₹2,000 to 3.7 mn marginalised beneficiaries

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday announced that his government has credited a special fund of Rs 2,000 to the bank accounts of 37.79 lakh people from the marginalised sections of society. Responding to requests for additional support for the elderly, widows, aged transgenders and persons with disabilities, today the government has provided Rs 2,000 over and above their existing monthly pensions, Stalin said in a social media post. He noted that the move is aimed at alleviating the financial hardships of those living on the margins. The current round of funding follows the distribution of a Rs 2,000 special summer package provided for women in February under the 'Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai' scheme, which triggered several requests from vulnerable groups for similar support. According to CM, the government has transferred the special assistance package of Rs 3,200 to 29.29 lakh beneficiaries comprising senior citizens and widows, who were receiving benefits under

Stalin credits ₹5,000 to TN women under Kalaignar Scheme ahead of polls

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday said the state government has deposited Rs 5,000 each to 1.31 crore women beneficiaries of the government's women entitlement scheme. Also, he announced to double the monthly grant to Rs 2,000 if his DMK party was voted to power in the upcoming Assembly election. Noting that Rs 5,000 has been directly deposited into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries of Kalaignar Women's Entitlement scheme, he said, "You would have received Rs 5,000 this morning. I have decided to provide the sum in view of an attempt (by vested interests) to freeze the scheme citing upcoming elections." So, in order to counter the move to prevent the women from receiving the monthly financial assistance due for them, he had decided to provide the sum for three months from February and in addition provide Rs 2,000 to meet their expenses during summer, he said in a video message posted on his social media platform 'X.' "Further, the monthly entitlement of Rs 1,000 w

Stalin urges PM Modi to expedite TN rail projects, release pending funds

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his urgent intervention to direct the Ministry of Railways to expedite sanctioned projects in the state by releasing required funds and reviving those kept in abeyance. Stalin highlighted that the progress of several crucial railway projects is being hindered by "delays in releasing funds by the Ministry of Railways" and the practice of providing partial funding for individual projects. He noted that while the state government has granted administrative approval for acquiring 2,500.61 hectares for various federal railway projects, the Railway Department is yet to allocate funds for 931.52 hectares, an official release said. "The delays in releasing funds and the piecemeal allocation... have hindered the progress of railway projects in Tamil Nadu," the chief minister stated, adding that this has created a state of "prolonged uncertainty" for affected landowners. Stalin pointed out that land

TN CM Stalin slams Amit Shah, says state will not bow before 'arrogance'

Lashing out at the BJP, Chief Minister MK Stalin has said not only Union Minister Amit Shah, but even an entire battalion of the RSS people will not be able to electorally influence Tamil Nadu and that the DMK would emerge victorious by defeating the saffron party. Addressing the DMK's youth wing (north zone) functionaries meeting here, Stalin recalled the hard work behind the growth and development of the party's young wing over the decades and the work of leaders, including him. Alleging that right-wing outfits were working aggressively after the BJP assumed office at the Centre for the third time in 2024, he claimed that they were spreading lies and "defamatory and retrograde thoughts," and to take on this phenomenon, the party has to vigorously campaign and disseminate its principles. The CM said: "The duty is not just to safeguard Tamil Nadu and the Tamil language; we have the duty to protect the whole of India and its pluralism. The DMK is the only state party that is ...

No rest until amending Constitution to fix timelines for guvs: CM Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin on Friday asserted that "there will be no rest" until amending the Constitution to fix timelines for Governors to clear Bills. In his first reaction to the Supreme Court's advisory opinion on the Presidential Reference, he said, "Our fight for State rights and true federalism will continue." In a statement, Stalin said that the Supreme Court's opinion in its answer to the Presidential Reference will have no impact on the April 8, 2025 judgment in the case of State of Tamil Nadu vs Governor of Tamil Nadu. In fact, the chief minister said that the Bench tendering the advisory opinion has reaffirmed that the elected government should be in the driver's seat, and there cannot be two executive power centres in the State. "The Governor has no fourth option to kill the Bill or exercise a pocket veto (as was done by the TN Governor). He has no option to withhold the Bill simpliciter," the CM asserted.

Stalin slams Centre's 'no metro' move for Madurai, Coimbatore as revenge

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday hit out at the Union BJP government for rejecting Metro Rail projects for Madurai and Coimbatore, calling the move an act of "revenge" against the people of the state. In a post on 'X,' Stalin said the Centre had told the state "No metro" for the "Temple City" of Madurai and "South India's Manchester", Coimbatore, despite similar projects being cleared in other smaller cities in BJP-ruled states. "The Union BJP government has denied Metro Rail for Temple City Madurai and for South India's Manchester, Coimbatore, on flimsy grounds. A government exists to serve people without bias. Yet the Union #BJP treats #Tamil Nadu's democratic choice as a reason to take revenge," wrote CM Stalin in his post. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry recently reportedly returned Tamil Nadu's Detailed Project Reports for the two Tier-II cities, citing the Metro Rail Policy, 2017, which restricts central support to urban agglomerations with a ...

CM Stalin accuses BJP govt of bias, says people have numerous questions

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday alleged that the Centre was totally prejudiced against the state. Not only state Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu, who pointed out the fiscal prejudice against Tamil Nadu, but also the hearts of the people in the state were filled with many questions, he said. "I (wish to) ask some of them. How can corrupt individuals emerge clean from the 'washing machine' after joining the BJP alliance?" Stalin repeated his 'washing machine' analogy to accuse the BJP of laundering the reputations of tainted politicians. "What kind of arrogance is it that the country's important schemes and laws are named only in Hindi and Sanskrit? Why are Union Ministers limiting our children by telling them unscientific superstitions? What are you going to achieve by creating chaos through Governors in the states ruled by the opposition parties?" Stalin asked in a post on 'X' tagging Thangam Thennarasu. He questioned the alleged vote rigging to cheat people's .
