'One man, one govt, one business group': Cong's swipe over Adani issue

The Congress on Saturday attacked the government over the Adani issue, saying the G20 theme is 'One Earth, One Family, One Future' but Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to actually believe in "One Man, One Government, One Business Group". The Congress has been questioning the financial dealings of billionaire Gautam Adani's group after US research firm Hindenburg alleged "irregularities" and charged it with stock price manipulation. The Adani Group has denied all the allegations made in the Hindenburg report and claimed there had been no wrongdoing on its part. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a statement that as the 2023 G20 Summit begins in Delhi, it is worth recalling Modi's many exhortations at previous meetings of the grouping for the international community to crack down on corruption and money laundering. At the 2014 Brisbane G20 meeting, the prime minister called for global cooperation "to eliminate safe havens for economic offenders", to "track down and ...

Unprecedented failure of Modi govt not to come out with Census: Congress

The Congress slammed the Narendra Modi government on Friday for its failure to conduct the decadal Census due in 2021 and said as many as 14 crore Indians would be excluded from their food entitlements because of this. In a statement, Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh dubbed the Modi government as "inept and incompetent", and said not conducting the Census is an unprecedented failure in the history of the country. Ramesh said even other developing countries in the G20 bloc, such as Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa, have conducted their Census despite COVID-19. The Congress demanded that the BJP-led Centre stop denying 14 crore Indians their basic rights under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and increase the beneficiary quota until the Census is carried out. It also sought the conduct of an updated national caste census and said efforts to oppose a state-level caste census should stop. "The start of the 18th G20 summit with India's rotational preside

Pralhad Joshi accuses Ramesh of twisting facts on constitutional provisions

Union minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday accused senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh of twisting facts about constitutional provisions and parliamentary procedures related to Parliament sessions. It is crucial to stop the spread of misinformation that scandalises Parliament and its procedures, the parliamentary affairs minister said in a rejoinder to Ramesh who had accused him of being "misleading" in his reply to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's letter to the prime minister. The Congress has been targeting the government for not disclosing the agenda of the five-day special session starting from September 18. Ramesh had claimed the agenda of every special session in the past was well known in advance and alleged that it was only the Modi government that "distorts" parliamentary conventions. Seeking to set the record straight, Joshi accused him of "falsely claiming" that the historic function in Parliament's Central Hall on June 30, 2017 for the GST roll out, was a Parliament ...

Modi and co using Sanatana ploy to divert attention: Udhayanidhi Stalin

Under intense attack from the BJP over his alleged anti-Sanatan Dharma remarks, DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday accused the saffron party leaders of "twisting" his statements and vowed to face all cases in this connection legally. He also launched a strident attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he was "globe-trotting", afraid of facing questions over the Manipur violence. "For the last 9 years, all your (BJP) promises are empty promises. What have you exactly done for our welfare is a question currently being raised in unison by the entire country against an unarmed, fascist BJP government. It is in this background that the BJP leaders have twisted my speech at the TNPWAA conference as 'inciting genocide'. They consider it a weapon to protect themselves," he said. What is surprising is that those like Union Minister Amit Shah and Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states were demanding action against him based on "fake news," Udhayanidhi said.

4-months after ethnic violence, Manipur lies 'forgotten' by Centre: Cong

The Congress on Monday attacked the Centre over its handling of the situation in Manipur, alleging that four months after ethnic violence broke out, the state lies "forgotten" by the Modi government. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that in the last four months, the world has witnessed "how the prime minister (Narendra Modi) has failed Manipur during its worst crisis". In a post on X, Ramesh alleged that "while the prime minister and his drum-beaters are obsessed with G20, four months after ethnic violence broke out on May 3rd, Manipur lies forgotten by the Modi government". The chief minister (N Biren Singh) has ensured that the Manipuri society is more divided today than ever before, he said. "The Union home minister (Amit Shah) has failed to put an end to the violence and ensure the recovery of arms and ammunition. Instead, many more armed groups have entered the conflict," Ramesh said. The prime minister "refuses" to visit Manipur, or lead an all-party delegation,

Some people unhappy with empowerment of poor under Modi govt: UP CM

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said a section of people in the country was not happy with the upliftment of the weaker sections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at an event after laying the foundation stone and inaugurating 195 development projects of the Jal Nigam and Public Works Department costing Rs 629 crore here, Adityanath said economic development in the country and the feeling of nationalism among its citizens were on the rise under the Modi government. The most populous state in the country, Uttar Pradesh, faced an identity crisis before 2017. This serious crisis was due to nepotism, casteism, mafias, and corruption in politics. The people of UP have now exposed those who were a threat to the state's identity, he said. Under the leadership of the prime minister, development and nationalism are flourishing, but there are people who are not happy with the empowerment of the poor and the upliftment of the weaker sections, the CM ...

India continues to be fastest-growing economy, thanks to Modinomics: BJP

Various growth parameters indicate that India continues to be the fastest-growing economy in the world and the country's GDP data for the first quarter of the current fiscal should come at around 8 per cent, thanks to "Modinomics", the BJP said on Thursday. The increase in both rural and urban demand, the consumption pattern, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection and various other parameters provide "very good indications" for the future, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national spokesperson Syed Zafar Islam told a press conference at the party headquarters here. "With festivals approaching, there will be further increase in demand. The economy of the country will be in a much better position. The growth momentum will also increase further," he said, giving credit to "Modinomics" -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi's economic vision. "The GDP data for the first quarter is going to come today. I don't know what the figure will be, but the speed of growth indicates that it will be ..

Governance under PM Modi is about service, good admin, welfare of poor: MoS

Governance in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is about serving the nation, good administration, welfare of the poor and building a better future for the country for all Indians, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Monday. Addressing the newly inducted recruits at the 8th tranche of the Rozgar Mela event organised by CRPF in Chadrayangutta here, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology said being in government today is about service, good governance and looking after the weak and vulnerable. "It is not about authority, power or control. This is the changed concept of our maximum governance and service," he said. Rajeev Chandrasekhar said before 2014, the impression about the government or perception about governance in India was that it is dysfunctional, it is corrupt, it is only for those who are connected, it is only for those who have got a Godfather. "Therefore there is a very different connotation to the concept of government jobs. ...

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday claimed that the Modi government still owes Rs 6,366 crore in MGNREGA wages to 18 states and union territories in the country even after a one third cut in its budget.
