Heavy downpours in South Korea kill 14 and leave 12 others missing

Torrential rains that slammed South Korea for five days have left 14 people dead and 12 others missing, the government said Sunday. One person was killed on Sunday after their house collapsed during heavy rain and another person was found dead after being swept by a swollen stream in Gapyeong, a town northeast of Seoul, the Interior and Safety Ministry said. The ministry said eight people were discovered dead and six others were reported missing in the southern town of Sancheong on Saturday after heavy downpours caused landslides, house collapses and flash floods there. A ministry report said that six people remain missing in Gapyeong and the southern city of Gwangju. Earlier last week, three people were found dead in a submerged car, and a person was also killed when their car was buried by soil and concrete after a retaining wall of an overpass collapsed in Osan, just south of Seoul, during heavy rain. As of 9 a.m. on Sunday, about 3,840 people remain evacuated from their homes,

Monsoon reaches Delhi, covers entire country nine days ahead of time

The monsoon on Sunday covered Delhi a day ahead of the normal date of June 30 and advanced over the remaining parts of the country nine days before the usual date of July 8, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. According to IMD data, this is the earliest the monsoon has covered the entire country since 2020 when it did so by June 26. The rain-bearing system usually makes its onset over Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8. It starts retreating from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws completely by October 15. This year, the monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, its earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009, when it arrived on May 23. Supported by strong low-pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the monsoon advanced rapidly over the next few days, covering areas up to central Maharashtra, including Mumbai and the entire northeast by May 29. However, this was followed by a prolonged stagnation of around 18 days

Govt making every effort to ensure waterlogging-free monsoon, says Delhi CM

The Delhi government is making every effort, including deploying automatic pumps and personnel at vulnerable spots, to ensure that the national capital remains free from waterlogging during monsoon, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday. Accompanied by Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma, the chief minister inspected the waterlogging-prone Minto Bridge underpass to take stock of the preparations for monsoon. "Automatic pumps have been deployed here that will flush out water during heavy rain and a 2.5-kilometre-long pipeline has been laid to carry the accumulated water out. Operators will also be on round-the-clock duty" Gupta said. Vulnerable spots have been identified and corrective measures are being taken. The Delhi government will take every step in a time-bound manner to ensure there is no waterlogging this year, she told reporters. Gupta will also inspect monsoon preparedness at other major waterlogging points, including Ring Road near the WHO building and the
