Mumbai faces long CNG queues for second day after major pipeline damage

CNG pumps across Mumbai and neighbouring areas witnessed long queues for the second straight day on Tuesday, as supply disruptions caused by damage to a key gas pipeline continued to hamper refuelling for vehicles. Most CNG pumps, including those operated by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), saw long queues from early morningparticularly of black-yellow taxis and autorickshawswith several drivers reporting wait times of three to four hours, compared to the usual 15 to 30 minutes. As per Mahanagar Gas Limited, the disruption began on Sunday after third-party damage to GAIL's main supply pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) compound hit gas flow to MGL's City Gate Station at Wadala - a key entry point for the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) supply to the city. MGL on Monday evening said nearly 60 per cent, or 225 of the 389 CNG pumps supplying gas to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, remained operational, and full restoration was expected by Tuesday noon. CNG supply to Mumbai hit after pipeline damage; autos, taxis affected

CNG supply to the financial capital was affected on Sunday due to a damage to the main pipeline, Mahangar Gas (MGL) said. A majority of autorickshaws and taxis, including those operated by companies such as Ola and Uber, and also some of the buses run by public transport undertakings run on compressed natural gas (CNG) supplied by MGL. The gas utility, however, said it has "prioritised" supply to residences that will ensure that piped natural gas supply to homes continues. "Due to third-party damage in the main gas supply pipeline of GAIL (Gas Authority of India) inside RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertiliser) compound, the gas supply to MGL's City Gate Station (CGS) at Wadala has been affected," a company statement said. CNG stations across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, including the dedicated CNG stations for public transport undertakings "may not operate" due to stoppage of gas supply in CGS Wadala, and, thereby, the MGL pipeline network, it added. The company did not give any

India among top data centre markets; Mumbai costs among lowest globally

India has emerged as one of the world's most attractive markets for data centre investment, with Mumbai ranking as the second-lowest-cost region globally for data centre construction in 2025, according to the latest Turner & Townsend Data Centre Construction Cost Index. The report states that Mumbai's data centre construction cost is just USD 6.64 per watt, positioning the city 51st out of 52 global markets assessed. The ranking is based on the cost per watt to build data centres, with 1st rank representing the highest construction costs and 52nd the lowest. Thus, Mumbai's 51st position indicates it is the second most cost-effective city in the world for data centre construction, offering significantly lower costs compared to most other markets. This low-cost environment gives India a strategic edge for investment, substantially lower than other major hubs such as Tokyo, Singapore, and Zurich, where costs per watt are at least twice as high. Over 90,000 stray dogs in Mumbai but only 8 shelters for them: BMC

There are over 90,000 stray dogs in Mumbai, but the number of shelters for them is only eight, civic officials said on Saturday, a day after the Supreme Court directed relocation of stray canines to designated shelters after due sterilisation and vaccination. The officials said that in order to implement the apex court's order, more dog shelters need to be set up in the metropolis. Taking note of the "alarming rise" in dog bite incidents within institutional areas like educational institutions, hospitals and railway stations, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the forthwith relocation of stray canines to designated shelters after due sterilisation and vaccination. It said the recurrence of dog bite incidents within institutional areas reflected not only administrative apathy but also a "systemic failure" to secure these premises from preventable hazards. The SC also directed the states and Union Territories to take appropriate steps to address the "deficiencies and shortcomings"

Mumbai hostage crisis: Last rites of Rohit Arya performed in Pune

The last rites of Rohit Arya, who was gunned down by the Mumbai police after he took 19 people hostage, were performed in Pune in the early hours of Saturday. The 50-year-old had held 17 children, between the ages of 10 and 12, hostage at a studio in Mumbai's Powai area on Thursday. Police rescued the children and two adults after a three-hour hostage drama that ended in Arya's death. His body was transported to Pune after a post-mortem at Mumbai's JJ Hospital. The last rites were performed in the presence of Arya's wife, son and other close members of his family. According to police sources, Arya had been living away from Pune for some time. Preliminary information suggests he had very little contact with his family in recent years. Arya had earlier claimed that the dues for a project he had undertaken for the Maharashtra education department were pending, and he had even staged a protest in Pune to get the amount.
