The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday nominated corporator Ritu Tawade for the Mumbai mayor election, while its ally Shiv Sena declared Sanjay Ghadi as its candidate for the deputy mayor's post. BJP leader Amit Satam declared Tawade's name, while Shiv Sena leader Rahul Shewale announced Ghadi's candidature at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters. Tawade is a corporator from Ward 132, while Ghadi was elected from Ward 5 in the January 15 civic election. Ghadi will serve as deputy mayor for 15 months, Shiv Sena secretary Sanjay More has said in a statement. He was one of the senior former Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators who switched sides to join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. By splitting the deputy mayor's term in Mumbai, the Shiv Sena intends to give an opportunity to four of its corporators. In the polls to the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while Shiv Sena won 29 seats. The rul
Nominations for the post of Mumbai mayor will be filed on February 7, while elections connected to it will take place on February 11, though none of the parties have announced names of candidates as yet. In the January 15 polls to the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while its ally Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena won 29 seats. The ruling alliance, with a combined strength of 118 corporators, is past the halfway mark of 114 and is well placed to secure the mayor's post. The Shiv Sena (UBT), which ruled the civic body for 25 years since 1997, won 65 seats, while its allies, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), won six and one seat, respectively. Mumbai's next mayor will be a woman corporator from the general category, as decided through a lottery conducted by the state Urban Development Department last month, an official said. A newly elected BJP corporator,

Traffic was paralysed overnight on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway after a gas tanker overturned in the Khandala Ghat section, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and causing massive congestion on both carriageways, officials said on Wednesday. The vehicles remained stationary near the accident site for several hours, with passengers deprived of food, water, and toilet facilities. According to the expressway control room, the Mumbai-bound traffic was diverted onto the Pune-bound carriageway for about a 2-km stretch due to the gas tanker accident that occurred on Tuesday evening. However, normal movement could not be restored due to a continuous gas leak from the tanker, resulting in long queues and crawling traffic for over 12 hours, even for Pune-bound motorists, an official said. The impact was severe on motorists, with several passengers stranded for hours. As per the expressway control room, the tanker overturned on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway at around 5 pm on Tuesday. Mumbai's next mayor will be a woman from the general category, as determined by a lottery conducted by the Maharashtra Urban Development Department on Thursday, an official said. The procedure was, however, opposed by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar, who claimed that the rules to arrive at this decision were changed without informing anyone. She said the last two mayors were from the general category, so the new mayor should have been from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) or the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. "We condemn the way the procedure (of lottery) was conducted," Pednekar said. The lottery determines the category for which the mayor's post will be reserved, such as general, women, SC, ST, and OBC categories. Once the category is announced, eligible candidates file their nominations. Elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and 28 other civic bodies in the state were held on January 15.

The Eknath Shinde-led outfit contested 90 seats and won 29 in the Mumbai civic polls, results of which were announced on Friday. A senior party leader said the corporators were being moved to a luxury hotel in Bandra to help them "refresh" after a hectic election season. The leader, however, gave no clarity on how long the corporators will be housed in the luxury hotel. Another party functionary cited orientation of newly elected members behind the move, adding the corporators will be housed in the hotel for a couple of days. The move comes amid Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray's remark earlier in the day that his party could install its mayor in the metropolis if God wills.
