Fire erupts aboard Naval ship at Mumbai dockyard, doused; no casualty

A fire erupted onboard an indigenous frigate ship undergoing refit at Mumbai's Naval Dockyard which was swiftly doused, an official said on Monday. No casualties were reported in the incident which occurred on Sunday evening. The Indian Navy in a statement said an inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the fire which was detected by the ship's duty staff while carrying out routine maintenance work. "A fire broke out onboard an Indian Naval Ship undergoing refit at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai on 21 July 2024 evening," the Navy stated. Details about the extent of the damage caused to the ship due to the fire are not available. "The ship's firefighting team immediately commenced firefighting action and was augmented by the fire brigade from the Naval dockyard, Mumbai and other units in the vicinity. The fire has been brought under control and no casualties have been reported in the incident," the Navy said.

Mumbai sees heavy showers; flights diverted, waterlogging in many areas

Heavy rains pounded Mumbai and its suburbs on Sunday, disrupting flight operations and inundating roads in many parts of the city, officials said. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were suspended twice for a brief period due to inclement weather and low visibility, a source said. At least 15 flights were diverted to the nearby airports, mainly Ahmedabad, till 4 pm. As intermittent heavy spells of rain hit the city, runway operations were suspended at 12.12 pm for eight minutes and from 1 pm to 1.15 pm, the source said. Flights of IndiGo, Air India, Vistara and Akasa were diverted, it was stated. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the city received 82 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs 96 mm, and the western suburbs got 90 mm till 4 pm. Suburban train services were operating normally on both the Western and Central Railway routes. However, trains were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes on the Harbour Line due to waterlogging near Mankhu

Hoarding crash: HC asks police to reply to ad firm's plea to quash FIR

The Bombay High Court on Friday directed the police to file a detailed affidavit in response to the petition of advertising firm director Bhavesh Bhinde, arrested in the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse case. Bhinde has sought that the FIR registered against him be quashed claiming that the hoarding collapse, which killed 17 persons, was an act of God and he is released on interim bail pending hearing of the plea. He has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. A division bench of Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha said the plea also raises the contention of illegal arrest as the mandatory notice under section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure was not issued to the accused first. The bench said the police will have to clarify their stand on this as several judgments say that illegal detention necessitates immediate release. Public Prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar said a detailed affidavit will be filed. The court posted the matter for further hearing on July 26. Bh

Mumbai's first underground Metro rail corridor, known as Metro Line 3, will start operating from July 24, Bharatiya Janata Party's general secretary Vinod Tawde said on Wednesday. He gave this information in a post on X. Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as Mumbai Metro Aqua Line or Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line, is a 33.5 km underground route that will connect south Mumbai to the city's western suburbs and is expected to reduce the burden on the suburban locals. "Mumbai's first underground metro (Aqua Line) is starting from July 24, which will give new impetus to the speed of the city," Tawde said in his post. Last month, Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) successfully completed the trials of rolling stock for the underground Mumbai Metro Line 3.
